15.01.2022 Now is a good time to start designing and prepping for this year’s vegetable garden, our climate here allows us to grow a number of things during the dry, and with a little bit of thought and some good soil prep you can have some fresh home grown vegies/ fruit and herbs no matter how small your yard is. There is many things that go to make a good vegi garden but I think one big key is good growing media. Whether it be, good soil with lots of life in it or vermiculite / clay ...balls more for hydroponics and aquaponics, a good base for our plants to live in is important and will produce better plants. For most of us it will probably be soil, a lot of people complain that the soil here is no good to grow in but I assure you that it can be, the important thing with soil is to make sure it is living, meaning it has got lots of good bacteria in it, and with a little bit of work and planning this is easily done, but if you still not happy with it good quality top soil can be brought in or you can use potting mixes, but remember often with some potting mixes they may lack a bit of body and will be drained of goodness after a few weeks from a heavy feeding plant. It doesn’t have to be straight in to the ground, raised beds are always popular as well as pots and vertical gardens (pots and vertical gardens are good if you don’t own the place because they can be easily taken with you) Remember if you’re dealing with soils and potting mixes to always wear appropriate PPE like gloves and faces mask. growing your own food is always rewarding, it doesn’t have to be heaps of hard work or overly time consuming, it could be something small from a few pots with nice herbs or half your back yard with enough to produce allot of your food needs. here at barefoot services we are able to help you in any way to get your vegi garden going if you just need some more advice or are chasing raised beds, vertical gardens or anything else like soils, seeds plants fertilisers we are able to help we can even fully design and install for you, we can even do hydroponic and aquaponics setups, we are always happy to help someone to grow their own food. 11.01.2022 It has been nice and wet so we thought we would give some garden tips to make the most of the rain: now is a good time to switch off your retic system if you haven’t already, most systems will have a rain off selection so you just need to turn the dial to that or system off selection. Rain is much better for our lawns and gardens then water from the reticulation system as it has nitrogen and other goodies in it that the plants love. no need to fertilise at this time of year, ...your lawns are probably growing like crazy anyway and any extra fertiliser will either just leave your lawns leggy and weak or just get washed off in to the water system, however at the end of the wet (around April /May) is the best time to apply a good slow realise fertiliser. If your lawns are hydrophobic (soil that is hydrophobic causes water to collect on the soil surface rather than infiltrate into the ground) even slightly or a heavy clay you may be losing most of this great rain as it turns to run off, by apply a wetting agent or a clay breaker (gypsum is the most common and helps break clay up) you will be allowing the lawn to take in more of the water available. Both wetting agents and clay breakers (gypsum) are available in a liquid or solid form at home hardware. Mow you lawn slightly higher then you usually would, not by heaps and don’t let it go leggy. Just lift the deck a bit higher than normal, by allowing the lawn to grow slightly higher than normal it will shade and protect itself and the ground better from the sun and will dry out less. Try and mow your lawn as regularly as possible to make sure it doesn’t go long and leggy if possible, when you cut long lawn right down it is often stressed. 04.01.2022 Unfortunately we haven’t had much more rain, so to keep your lawns nice and green you may want to turn your retic back on, it’s always good to give it a bit of a test first to make sure it’s all working well, wastage through incorrect retic systems is every common and can not only waste water and money but effect your plants as well. One of the best things to do is put it on a manual test and check all nozzles and sprays, due to bits of sand or calcium they may become blocked.... This however is easily fix, just remove the head and wash with a fine tooth brush Home retic systems are great for watering our yards and lawns and are time efficient, can save water and money. A lot of people set and forget their systems and without regular maintenance and checks they can often run poorly and end up wasting water and money. it can be a simple thing like a blown head, incorrect running times, incorrect sprinkler heads, heads facing the wrong way however we usually don’t notice this as most systems usually come on when we are away or in bed. Over time these small errors can end up wasting a lot of water and money so it is important to check and maintain your retic systems and keep them working at their best. Barefoot services are able to attend to all your reticulation problems, as well as any other lawn and garden needs, message us though our face book page or call on 0409100732. See more
