23.01.2022 W F H || Working from home may be the new normal for many of us. And while it can have its benefits (like copious amounts of tea and working in your PJs ) there are also some downfalls of working from home. Unfortunately some of which we are starting to see more of in practice (stiff neck and shoulders, headaches, low back pain, hip pain, wrist pain... the list goes on )! Many home workstations have been set up in a hurry - and are perhaps even as simple as popping the la...ptop on the kitchen table or bench top. And while we are all for innovation...these positions are certainly not as ergonomic as most office desk setups ! For many of you this may only be a temporary situation, so understandably you wont want to fork out a lot of money on a home office. So here are a few simple pointers to try and improve your current set up in the meantime and hopefully avoid a lot of those WFH aches and pains we are seeing more often ! If youre using a computer try and ensure you have a set workstation or place that you can adjust to your needs. This could be either standing or sitting (or ideally a combination of the two). If you are using a laptop you have the luxury of being mobile - use this to your advantage and switch up your position throughout the day - movement and avoiding sustained postures is key in avoiding a lot of pain and stiffness. Try to avoid plonking your self on the couch (or in bed ) and sitting there for the rest of the day . If sitting, make sure you have a comfortable and supportive chair, ideally that allows your knees to drop slightly lower than your hips and your feet to touch the floor. (A great alternative is an exercise ball, allowing you to keep moving while working and also encouraging a better posture). Make sure your screen is set up at eye level and your keyboard should be either at the same level as your elbows or slightly below as this streamlines your arms to avoid strain ! Most importantly, take regular breaks: look away from your device, walk around, stretch, grab a drinkyour brain will thank you for it too ! For any more advice or if youd like one of our practitioners to assess you (or your workstation at home via Telehealth) get in touch and we would be happy to help !

23.01.2022 Happy Mothers Day To all the mums out there, past, present and soon to be, may your day be filled with love and laughter ! Thank you for all you do !

We can even show you self- treatment and pain-relieving techniques to do from the comfort of your own living room ! We are currently still open for business at Bare Motion, but are pleased to now offer clients the option of remote consultations where needed. This may be for those that are unable to attend face-to-face appointments or for those who would rather keep their distance at this time ! 10.01.2022 G L U T E T R I G G E R P O I N T S || The glute muscles are some of the most powerful muscles in the body and are a common unsuspected source of pain. When you have low back pain, buttock pain, hip pain, or leg pain, your trouble may be caused or aggravated by trigger points in the gluteus maximus, medius and minimus as well as the piriformis and other deep muscles of the buttocks ! A great way to perform self-release of these muscles at home is to use a trigger point bal...l, spikey ball (or even a tennis ball) as demonstrated above . This may help to release tension, break up adhesions of the fascia, reduce muscle soreness and improve range of movement ! This can be done on the floor as demonstrated, or against the wall if you prefer. Try and keep the muscle you are releasing as relaxed as possible and remember: keep breathing. The more often you repeat, the easier it should get ! If you are unsure whether this is something you should do, or would like any help, please get in touch to chat with one of our practitioners !

09.01.2022 IN-TOEING A question that our practitioners are frequently asked by parents is whether or not they should be concerned if their child is showing signs of in-toeing . In-toeing is when a childs foot or feet turn inward when they walk or run and is more commonly referred to as being pigeon-toed. If your child is in-toeing he/she may be prone to tripping. It is often first noticed when a baby begins walking but children at various ages may display in-toeing for a number of r...easons. For most children, in-toeing doesnt cause any pain and should correct itself before the age of eight. However, if you are concerned about your childs in-toeing or it is causing them pain and discomfort we encourage you to speak with our practitioners to find out if treatment would be beneficial .

08.01.2022 C H E S T O P E N E R || Foam roll your way to better posture ! This is a great exercise to open up your chest, stretch out your pecs and improve thoracic mobility ! Place a long foam roller on the floor.... Carefully position your tailbone at the bottom of the foam roller and slowly lie back so the foam roller is supporting the length of your spine. Once your spine has been laid out the length of the roller, bring your feet in towards the bottom keeping your knees bent and feet hip width apart (If you feel unbalanced you can widen your feet !) Start with your arms out in front of you pointing to the ceiling, then as you exhale slowly extend your arms out to the sides with your palms facing up. You should feel your chest open and stretch . As you inhale bring the arms back up to the starting position pointing towards the ceiling . Repeat this 8-10 times. (Alternatively you can hold and relax into the stretch for longer and repeat 3 times). Remember this should not be painful, if this is aggravating or if you are unsure if youre doing it correctly then please stop and consult your health practitioner before continuing ! For any more help of advice get in touch

01.01.2022 T H O R A C I C E X T E N S I O N S || Following on from our WFH post, thoracic extensions over a foam roller are a great exercise to add into your daily routine to try and combat the poor posture, slouching and rounded shoulders that might be starting to creep in ! Spending long hours sitting hunched over the desk/table or screen time on other devices can wreak havoc on the body and can often lead to dysfunction in the upper back, neck or shoulders . This is a ...great exercise to do throughout the day to keep the spine moving and improve thoracic extension (rather than the flexion that usually occurs when sitting with poor posture)! Even for those not sat at desks, this is a great general mobility exercise that can be used to increase motion and warm up before other movements and activities (e.g before a workout). Begin with the foam roller on the floor and position it across your upper back at the level of your spine that you would like to stretch. Wrap your hands around the back of your head to support the weight. Ensure you do not pull your head too far forward, trying to keep it in line with the rest of your spine. Inhale, then as you exhale allow your body to relax over the foam roll (Note: you do not need to go all the way to the ground, relax to tolerance and until you feel a gentle stretch). Hold this position in a stretch, continuing to focus on your breathing. Repeat a few times in the upper back then work your way down towards the mid back (remember the movement should come from the thoracic spine, not the lower back). If this is aggravating or painful (or if you are unsure) then please stop and consult your health practitioner before continuing . Any questions, please get in touch
