04.01.2022 WHY IS OIL SO IMPORTANT FOR YOUR SKIN? Did you know your skin is heavily dependant on a delicate balance of oil in order to control the evaporation of water from the skin? The simple law of physics says that oil sits on top of water. If we want to retain the water levels within our skin in order to support cellular hydration, the skin requires an oil covering.... The skin contains important oil phases that control the evaporation of water from the skin. Sadly, as we age and go through life, these important built-in defence systems fail and the outermost layer of the skin (your epidermis), begins to lose high amounts of water; and this water movement is known as fast trans-epidermal water loss (FTEWL). To maintain the water levels within the skin, all skin oils must be at optimum levels. Essential fatty acids such as phosphatidylcholine, ceramides, triglycerides and other sebum-related ingredients, are very important as they replenish the oil phases in order to keep the water content within the skin as much as possible! It’s important to remember that oil sits on top of water, and how both these solutions though very different, work in synergy with one another to create a healthy, functioning and sustainable skin.
