02.01.2022 There’s a lot of discussion in the media and online around human mental health , especially in these trying times. But what about the mental health of our dogs?... Whilst some of our dogs have enjoyed having us all home, others have felt disrupted. They are getting less sleep and can feel the tension as we juggle work, homeschooling, stress and general helplessness. Walking your dog can give them an outlet however, I want you to consider how you walk your dog. Most of us walk our dogs for exercise (for them AND for ourselves) or, we walk them for toileting purposes. We might take them to a dog park in an attempt to expend their energy and , outside of lockdown, we might also walk with friends and socialise. I would like to propose another way to walk your dog. I call it a decompression walk. It's often also known as a scent or sniff walk. A decompression walk is not bound by a certain distance or path or length of time. It is not a walk for OUR physical exercise. It is purely a walk led by your dogs own nose for your dogs mental health. A dog's sense of smell is their strongest and arguably their most important sense. A large proportion of their brain is dedicated to decoding smells. Sniffing therefore provides a lot of information to our dogs and really helps them to understand their environment. In the same way that a casual walk along the beach with no purpose can help US to clear our mind, a sniff walk really helps dogs to decompress, de-stress, connect with the outdoors and ultimately feel calm. Today on my walk to get my morning coffee I let Miguel’s nose lead the way. What normally takes us 10 minutes took about 40 but he really enjoyed it and so did I. He was also less startled by cars going past and loud noises as he was engrossed in the smells around him. I’m not saying that you need to do this everyday.in fact I think it’s best if we change things up for our dogsbut try it!! As the saying goes - sometimes we just need to slow down and smell the roses
