10.01.2022 We are sharing something that we wrote a few years ago, and it is still relevant! While winter may be a down time for breeding there is still plenty to do in pr...eparation for next season! For many clients there is the dilemma of choosing the stallion that will make the best match with his or her mare. Here are a few points to consider: If you have an older mare or one that has been difficult to breed in the past, try a nice young stallion that offers fresh or cool shipped semen. This should increase your chances as younger stallions generally have more active and more potent semen samples. Frozen semen can be risky for problem mares as the semen is generally not as active as it has been through the freezing/thawing process. It may end up taking several cycles for your older mare to conceive, therefore becoming expensive. And why AI rather than live cover? With AI we can control the amount of semen that we put in, we can also control where we place the semen in the mare's tract, and we can use semen extender that has a bit of antibiotic. We can also look at the semen sample under a microscope to make sure it looks motile. AI also reduces risk of injury to the mare during live cover. Live cover can be the best option for select mares and stallions, please ring to discuss if you have a query. If you have a young or very fertile mare, and you choose to use frozen semen, it is best to organise in advance. Frozen semen can be shipped to our clinic and stored BEFORE your mare arrives, in case you bring her to us and she is ready to breed! If you were wanting to breed your mare early in the season, it is ideal to start rugging and feeding your mare in late July or August and take note of her cycles if she begins cycling. We generally do not start accepting mares until September, and our recipient herd is not usually ready for embryo transfers until October. If you have any questions please contact us on 0407 564 623, or message us. Have fun choosing a stallion - after all, nobody knows the perfect combination of mare and stallion or that's what we would all be breeding, right? See more
