25.01.2022 Today marks the beginning of Family Matters National Week of Action 2020. Barnardos Australia stands with SNAICC - National Voice for our Children, to raise awareness and drive political change to eliminate the high number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in out-of-home care by 2040. Together, we can ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people grow up safe and cared for in family, community and culture. ... #NationalWeekofAction2020 See more

24.01.2022 Matt (10) and Zane (8) were placed into the care of their Aunty Janette who volunteered to take on her nephews to prevent them from being separated. At first the boys were overwhelmed with the change. They blamed themselves for being removed from their parents, who were unfit to care for them. But it’s now been three years and the brothers feel at home and are thriving. When Matt and Zane moved in with Aunty Janette, they started at a new school in the local area. Both boys i...nitially struggled to fit in and sadly Matt was misbehaving in class. In search of the right support, Aunty Janette enrolled the boys into the Barnardos Yurungai Learning Centre, an after-school program. She explained to staff the early trauma that the brothers had experienced and how Matt was acting out. Staff advised that Matt should undertake a medical assessment to determine if there were any medical issues driving this behaviour. Matt was diagnosed with ADHD and prescribed medication to control his outbursts. It took Matt a few weeks to adapt to the medication but once he did, his behaviour improved significantly. Yurungai staff have remained on hand to support Matt and Zane with some of the ongoing effects they suffered during their transition into care. Both boys have grown in a positive way, settling into school, the centre and at home with their Aunt. They’ve begun to make new friends and are finally enjoying their childhood. Aunty Janette is very happy with how far the boys have come and is incredibly grateful of all the support she has, and continues to receive, from Yurungai. See more

24.01.2022 Siblings Tessa and Jake have been living with foster carers Nate and Andre for 4 years. Both Nate and Andre grew up with opportunities that Jake and Tessa didn’t have, which inspired them to want to provide the same for children in need. Being part of a loving family has given Tessa and Jake hope for a brighter future, where they can grow up safely and enjoy their childhood. If you would like to talk to Barnardos about becoming a foster carer call us on 1800 663 441 or visit https://go.barnardos.org.au/fostercare *models have been used or names have been changed in some cases to protect identity

24.01.2022 Amanda Keller: Barnardos aren’t cancelling mothers! Thank you Amanda Keller from WSFM with Jonesy and Amanda for your understanding and support of our decision to bring the Mother of the Year Awards to a close. Listen to what Amanda had to say this morning:

23.01.2022 This NAIDOC Week we are celebrating the history of our Country with the theme 'Always Was, Always Will Be'. We acknowledge that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. As the oldest continuing culture on the planet we recognise First Nations Australians’ unsurpassed knowledge, practice and spiritual connection to the land. Always Was, Always Will Be, Aboriginal land.

21.01.2022 We believe all children deserve to grow up strong in family, culture and community. But sadly this is not the reality for many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. This week we are drawing attention to the over-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in out-of-home care. It's time to take action and help make a difference to the future of Indigenous children. Together, we can ensure every child can achieve their full potential in the safety and care of loved ones and their culture.

17.01.2022 As a family support and foster care charity, Barnardos Australia works with a diverse range of families - including single parents, foster parents, same sex couples, relatives caring for the children of family members, and children who are cared for by their grandparents. Now more than ever, greater numbers of children and their families are struggling with the day to day stress of raising children, and COVID-19 has only added to family struggles and vulnerability. Barnardos’ priority is to assist the most vulnerable children and families in our community with all our available resources. With this in mind, we have made the decision to bring the Barnardos Mother of the Year Awards to an end. We would like to thank and acknowledge all the amazing mums in our community that we have celebrated over the last 25 years.

As technology continues to advance and impact our daily lives it is vital that we encourage conversation and educate our children about keeping safe in the digital world. 13.01.2022 Meet Bernie and Matt who adopted 4 siblings Zander (15 years) Eve (12 years); Isaac (10 years); Zavier (6 years) through Barnardos who were featured on NBN News last night. Their oldest son Zander, sums it up beautifully when he explains being adopted means instead of focusing on protecting them (his younger siblings) and staying safe, I’m able to focus on myself and growing as an individual and having fun which is what every child and young person deserves. https://www.nbnnews.com.au//central-coast-adoption-feature/

11.01.2022 Throwback to times when we could gather together in large numbers to celebrate NAIDOC Week. Even though this year’s celebrations are looking different we are still marking this important week which recognises the culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Barnardos South Coast held a Family Fun Day to celebrate NAIDOC Week in July 2015. Featuring interviews with Barnardos Warrawong Centre Manager Kathy Jones, Barnardos Aboriginal Early Years Elaine Hudson, Community Elder Aunty Lorraine Brown and St George Bank Indigenous trainee Brittany Waterman about how Barnardos helps children and families in the local community. 11.01.2022 Last Christmas, Lily* and Jasmine* had no way to hide. There was nothing they could do to stop their stepdad from starving, beating and sexually abusing them. When they came into the care of Barnardos, both girls were deeply traumatised. The sisters will need ongoing, intensive therapy to heal. Learn more about Lily and Jasmine’s story here https://donate.barnardos.org.au/donate-now/christmas2020/

10.01.2022 Our amazing CEO Deirdre Cheers spoke to WSFM with Jonesy and Amanda this morning to explain that our decision to end the Mother of the Year Awards was not to de-value the important role that mothers play in today’s society as the media has portrayed, but rather to include all the families we assist and represent and to ensure that all our resources are put towards directly supporting the crucial services we provide to vulnerable children. Thank you again Jonesy and Amanda for the opportunity to set the record straight!

09.01.2022 One of the things that made us want to look after siblings is that we didn’t want anyone to be pulled apart. When Bernie and Matt took on four young siblings in foster care it changed all of their lives forever, and they wouldn’t have it any other way. Become a foster carer and help create extraordinary futures for children in need. Call us on 1800 663 441.

01.01.2022 Lily* and Jasmine* spent their whole lives trying to be invisible to the stepdad who abused them and to the bullies at school. It didn’t work. All their young lives, Lily and Jasmine were filled with fear, hunger, pain and humiliation. Learn more about their story and how you can help protect children like Lily and Jasmine this Christmas https://donate.barnardos.org.au/donate-now/christmas2020/
