23.01.2022 These are pix of Nugent Wade Brown's parents Charlotte (nee Dowling) born in Calcutta India & John Brown who was born in Denmark. They met and married in India before finally taking a boat with their 10 children and three servants plus a nanny to Sydney, arriving on the 23rd January 1838. Nugent Wade and two further children were born in Australia. Joh purchased a property in the Hunter Valley in Upper Paterson now called Gresford. He called it 'Colstoun' apparently ...after his ancestral Scottish home at Haddinton in Scotland. This link however, has yet to be proven. Incidentally, Nugent Wade Brown's sister Sigismunda who was born in Denmark, married Walter Brown (no relation whatsoever) who was the brother of Alfred and Arthur Brown of Gin Gin and Barolin Station fame. It would appear that they all went to King's School in Sydney together. But the plot thickens - stay tuned. See more

20.01.2022 Interesting to note Between 1869 and 1872 Arthur Brown 'purchased all except 1200 acres of his previously leased land, in all 6226 acres in 7 portions. The 1200 acres became the Pasturage Reserve. In 1881 part of the the Barolin estate was sold to a Maryborough syndicate Messrs E.B.C Corser, J.J Power, E.F Alriage, Charles Powers and W.H. Williams under the name and title of the Barolin Land & Tramway Co. Maryborough. In 1894 Arthur Brown died and his estate and interest in Barolin went to Nugent Wade Broun (Brown) and Henry Tarleton Whitty. This was later onsold to W.H Williams and H.E. Aldridge, and in 1912 two portions were sold to H.Stark Skyring.

19.01.2022 At the end of 1893 Nugent Wade Brown was actively managing Ban Ban Station when he was told by "some of the old blacks" of a waterhole at the top of a mountain, even though they had never seen it. He went in search of it and found difficult, dense scrub surrounding what he believed to be two craters of an extinct volcano that appeared to fill up from "the heavy rains in March". He wrote a description of this discovery to the Minister for Lands and asked for his sanction ...to name them 'The Colstoun Lakes' after his ancestral home in Scotland. He goes on to say that "A very interesting sight in the Colstoun Lakes Scrub are the enormous bottle trees which are there in great numbers and bulk, thirty five to thirty six feet in circumference. He sent Lord Lamington some photos of the trees around 1892, who had himself measured them on one of visits to Ban Ban. (Coalstoun Lakes is now a National Park about 20km south of Biggenden or 4 km north of the township of Coalstoun Lakes. The volcanos that Nugent found erupted about 600,000 years ago - still one of the youngest formations in Australia.)

14.01.2022 From the memoirs of Nugent Wade Brown. "In 1875 Gin Gin (Station) was sold to Thomas McIlwraith. I delivered the station and stock numbering 12,000 to John Forrest acting on behalf of the purchaser. I then removed my wife and family to Borolin. The only improvement there at the time was a small bungalow cottage overlooking the sea, and a loose box for a horse soon to arrive from England. The wet season and boisterous weather on the coast made the cottage uninhabitable... so I turned the loose box into a bedroom for my wife, with little alterations and in that loosebox one of my children was born - the now Mrs Guilford Davidson of Sandgate. I shortly started to build a very fine house, spacious stables and barn and underground brick and cement tanks". "At Borolin when the improvements were completed, we fattened bullocks; bred Short horns from the Duke of Derrimut and Devon stud cattle from Tocal; also draught and blood horses. The Borolin Estate was sold to a Maryborough syndicate in 1881. The imported horse "Fenman" ultimately found a home with Messrs Bowman of Mount Brisbane". Only the brick and cement tanks and possibly the stable have survived to this day.

07.01.2022 Interesting to note that Nugent was just 22 years old when he was led to the coast by his ‘native companion’. In Nugents memoirs he freely admits to having kidnapped this young kid from his clan - he was straggling behind the clan so he rode up grabbed him by a strap around his waist and rode off with him. Have to keep reminding myself that you can’t judge people on today’s standards... Nugents ancestors were wealthy shipping entrepreneurs in Denmark and maybe in Scotland als...o but this is less certain Certainly it appears that his Great Great grandfather was killed at the Battle of Culloden near Inverness in April 1746 Denmark may well have been a refuge from the aftermath and reprisals Nugent had a daughter born in a horse box at Barolin - a long way from the comforts and riches of Denmark What made them leave it all behind? 05.01.2022 Barolin - Land of kangaroos - still as true today as it was over 100 years ago and back into the mists of time. Rain yesterday amidst a storm that gusted 45 knots means lots of lovely fresh pick for our resident Eastern Greys. Here at rest in front of Barolin Homestead.

03.01.2022 Nugent Wade Brown's wife Margaret Antill was the granddaughter of Captain Henry Coden Antill who was a good friend and Aide De Camp to Governor Lachlan Macquarie. They sailed into Sydney in December 1809 on the 'Dromedary'. Later, Macquarie awarded Antill 2000 acres for his military service at Jarvisfield, named for Macquarie's first wife Jane Jarvis who died of consumption at age 24. Antill later subdivided some land for the formation of the town of Picton. The balance of the estate is now the Antill Park Country Golf Club and the original residence built in 1863 by Margaret's father John Macquarie Antill is the Golf Clubhouse. Margaret gave birth to a daughter in a horse box at Barolin Homestead - such is love.

02.01.2022 Barolin - land of the kangaroo, was first 'selected' back in 1863 by Arthur Brown and his brother Alfred Henry Brown and encompassed an area 19km by 5km - all the available land between the Burnett and Elliott Rivers. Wildlife was abundant - kangaroos, wallabies, emus, plains turkeys, possums, dingoes, lizards and snakes grew large and fat on the lush Barolin Plain. The original Barolin Head Station was built by Nugent Wade Brown - Arthur & Alfred's agent and station manager,... but was pulled down in 1912 when Sidney North Innes purchased the property and built the current Barolin Homestead designed by local architect F.H. Fairclough. The Innes Family, Sidney, his wife Caroline Matilda who he married in Oxfordshire, England in 1902, and their three sons and one daughter lived at Walla Station on the banks of the Burnett River near Gin Gin. Barolin was initially used Barolin for fattening big stock then bred Hereford stud cattle from 1925 onwards winning prizes at the Brisbane and Sydney Royal Shows. Sidney Innes was also the owner of a fine old Victorian Gentleman's residence called "Standish" on ten acres in Lane Cove Sydney, which now forms part of the Greenwich Hospital. Caroline Matilda Noble was born in Stanthorpe, joined her brother Fred Noble in his Toowoomba Chemist shop as an adult and married Sidney at his family seat in Oxfordshire in 1902. Her name appears on the Title Deed for Barolin Station when it was purchased on 25th September 1912 In 1929 she donated over 23 acres of land around Palmer Creek for a Public Park. Barolin was used by the family during holidays for the children to swim at the beach. She later transferred the Barolin property to her husband Sidney. When Sidney died in 1942, it went to their son Sidney Burnett Innes. Caroline died in 1952. Sidney Burnett Innes - subdivided 35 residential blocks north of Palmer's Creek and four rural acreages. Next....after the subdivision.
