21.01.2022 Our youngster! Most improved 2019/20
20.01.2022 Presentation day was held Sunday 25th. where players enjoyed a social game of bowls before presentations were made to the winners of events for the 2019/20 season, followed by a tea supplied by the ladies. Congratulation must go to Gerald Rothe and Kerry Ralph who both had very good years in winning most of the trophies on offer. Congratulations also to our young and upcoming bowlers in winning the most improved bowlers. Both Gavan Cullen and Betty Oldham were excited to be n...amed and presented with their trophies. Semi finals of the ladies singles are being played on Monday 2nd November between Kerry Ralph and Heather Crosthwaite with Ruth Burnett and Cheryl Townsing the other pair. The final for this event will on Monday 9th. November at 9.30 am. Social bowls is on this Monday morning so plenty of time to sort out and enter for the ladies club pairs which closes soon. Men's singles and pairs are progressing well with matches being played during the week. We are now down to the pointed end of the draws with the men's singles final to be played on Monday 9th. At 9.30am, the same time and date as the ladies. Men's final two have been decided and will be between Ian Smethurst and Peter Ware. No results available this week of the Men's trade day. Keith's Friday, ably run by Ron Dean, was attended by 24 bowlers who had good conditions in which to play. Winners of the day were Graeme Hickey and John Canning with +24 and runners up were Gavan Cullen and Brian Baldwin with +15. Best first game went to Carol Cox and Kevin Kennedy with +6. Best second game went to Ron Dean and Phyllis Escott with +7. The jackpot is safe for yet another week. This Tuesday is Melbourne Cup day so our Club will be holding their usual Cup event but with restrictions in place it is necessary that you bring your own lunch. Frivolities start at 12.00 noon. On Thursday around 4.30 we will be having a meeting with people named as team Captains/Side managers and anyone else who would like to learn more about the bowlslink scoring system that will be used this year. It will just be an informal meeting where we will go through what is required to enter teams and scores on the new system. Winners in the last Northern Rivers challenge were, at Finley, two teams from Tocumwal and at Jerilderie, it was two teams from Barooga. Winners at Jerilderie were Jeff Slater, Carol Cox,Fred Pinnuck and Mary Smethurst with 34 points. Runners up were Graeme Ashcroft, Karen Bruce, Liz Ewing and Jim Escott with 27 points. Pennant starts this coming week so polish your shoes and iron your shirts, we are under way. Teams will be posted on team app and on our own web site at www.baroogasports.clubs.bowlslink.com.au just as soon as they are decided by the Club selectors. See more
20.01.2022 Happy New Year to everybody! We had a shaky start to 2021 with the border between Victoria and NSW closing and once again we have a checkpoint to go through, but this time it is to enter Victoria. Not so bad though for the border residents as there is quite a large bubble been created allowing us to travel around our area and we only need to show our licence if travelling back from NSW. A site I was given shows the extent of the bubble and if you are interested you can ...copy and past this address in your web browser or click on link . https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer This shows the size of the bubble and as can be seen is quite large. The only bowls we have had on this past week was Keith's Friday social bowls and despite the forecast of morning rain it turned out a good day for bowls. Winners of the day were the pairing of Peter Buller and Ian Smethurst with +12. Runners up were two pairs, both on +8 and both on 12 ends so we had to go to percentage to separate them. Brian Baldwin and John Sullivan had 59.52% and Jim Escott and Vic Kendall had 63.33% so it was a close affair with Jim and Vic winning. Brian and John however won best first game with +4 and Mary Smethurst and Ken Anderson had best last game with +9. The jackpot did go off!! Ken Anderson and Mary Smethurst had a great start to the New Year sharing $371.00 between them. Next weeks Jackpot starts at $67.00. Pennant starts next weekend so attending practice on Wednesday is a must and hope to see you all there. Funeral for our good friend in Bruce Carlyon is on Monday 4th. at 2.00pm at St. Margaret's. Bowlers please wear your bowls shirt. See more
19.01.2022 Another mixed bag with pennant this week with two sides remaining undefeated. Friday pennant div 1 had a very good win over Picola and Saturday pennant division 3 also had a good win over Picola. Friday pennant division 2 had a close game with Tocumwal but lost by 4 shots. Division 1 Saturday played our old foes in Wunghnu at Wunghnu but could only win on two rinks and lost overall by 9. Division 2 lacking a bit of manpower had a disappointing loss by 20 to Berrigan. 14.01.2022 Ladies played their second round of the 100 up, Monday the 5th. with Heather Crosthwaite and Cheryl Townsend the winners who now go on and play the semi final against Ruth Campbell and Kerry Ralph respectively. Ladies singles due to start Monday 16th. Oct. Unfortunately the ladies trade day scheduled to be played last Wednesday at Finley had to be cancelled due to rain, better luck this week. Men's trade days have started where the first round was played at Cobram in wet an...d windy conditions. No winners advised however well done to those brave bowlers who battled the weather conditions on the day. The next round is at Barooga this Thursday followed by Tocumwal the week after. Tuesday this week we also have the Share the Wealth tournament being played. Keith's Friday had 32 bowlers play with the winners , with a great score, were Gerald Rothe and Brian Baldwin with +37. Runners up was decided on ends won as both partnerships of Helen Quinn/ Len Magee and Bill Hoog/ Ken Newton had +17, with eventual runner up being Helen Quinn and Len Magee with 14 ends won. Best first game went Bill Hoog and Ken Newton with +12 so a consolation to them in losing the runners up. Best second game went to Archie Ellis and Liz Ewing with +10. The jackpot did not go off so is worth $287.00 this week. Monday night bowls starts on Monday 9th. November at 7.30 pm names in by 7.00pm on the night, or preferably by contacting Col Campbell on 0419 879 562 before the start to register your interest in playing. Our Club events are about to start with a busy program ahead for a few but still time to get your name down for events including the club fours. Practice is on Wednesdays at 4.00pm so don't forget that and the Club's presentation day/evening is on Sunday 25th starting at 2.00pm with a social game of bowls, names on sheet for that. The Northern rivers challenge was played last Saturday at Berrigan and Barooga with our teams at Barooga (Ken Newton, Mary Smethurst, Heather Crosthwaite and Gordon Bennett) and at Berrigan (Ruth Burnett, Neville Ingram, Kerry Ralph and Brett Wright) being winners of the day and taking home the spoils. Congratulations to both teams. Remember to get your names in before Wednesday if you would like a game in next Saturdays' games. See more
13.01.2022 Congratulations to Kerry Ralph on winning the Club 100 up final against Heather Crosthwaite in a great game of bowls. Well done to both girls in reaching the final. The first round of the ladies Club singles will be played /started this Monday. Men's singles have started and are being played at various dates during the week. Ladies trade day was held at Berrigan last week and the winners were again a Barooga team in Carol Wigg and Ruth Burnett, runners up were Heather Tabe, K...erry Turner and Betty Boyd. Next ladies trade day will be held at Tocumwal. State 60 and over ladies and men's pairs were held Sunday 18th at Tocumwal with our Club doing very well. Cheryl Townsing and Kerry Ralph winning the ladies and Ian Smethurst and Jeff Nisbet winning the Mens' pairs. Congratulations to both teams of pairs. The 60 and over singles will be held this Wednesday at Barooga. Any bowler wishing a game of pennant this year is encouraged to put their name down as soon as possible as the selectors are looking at who is available this year. With a lot of players being unavailable for a number of reasons we will need all available players, including the help of ladies to play Saturdays,so your assistance in putting your name up as available would be most helpful. This Cup day we will again be holding a function to celebrate the running of the cup so put that day down in the diary and come along for a bit of fun. The day will have to be a bring your own for food due to Covid restrictions but will still be fun with cup sweeps etc. plus the bar will be open to help you celebrate your win. Keith's Friday was held with 24 bowlers playing in what turned out to be a pleasant day for bowling, defying any threat of rain. Winners of the day were John Sullivan and Helen Quinn with +15 followed closely by Ruth Burnett and Brian Baldwin with +14. First game winners were Graeme Hickey and Marita O'Kane with +11 and best second game winners were Jan Cullen and Jill Toohey with +13. The Jackpot did not go off so is safe for another week. Unfortunately Northern Rivers Challenge matches were unable to be played last Saturday due to the rainfall overnight. Games, I believe will be played next Saturday at the same venues so keep your eyes open for that. Don't forget everyone that the presentation day is on today (Sunday) with bowls at around 2.00pm followed by presentation then supper. See more
11.01.2022 HOORAY! Pennant is finally under way. After delays due to Covid we are finally into the 2020/21 season. Friday was a mixed day with division two losing to Nathalia by 18 shots but this was a very good effort as Nathalia fields a very competitive side in division two. The division one side had a very good win over Numurkah by 30 shots for a great start for the season for them. Saturday pennant saw division one have a close but very good win over a determined Strathmerton side.... Three rinks up, with the biggest margin being 5 and one rink had a draw so as it can be seen it was a close game indeed. Unfortunately both division two and three lost their opening matches by 17 and 12 shots respectively but here's hoping for a better result next week. Last Monday the ladies played in their social event. Two rinks played 2 bowl triples and one rink played 3 bowl pairs. Overall the winners of the morning were the triple team of Helen Quinn, Phyl Escott and Elaine Blizzard. Keith's Friday had it's numbers thinned a bit as pennant started, however 16 bowlers enjoyed the day where the winners were Fred Pinnuck and Brian Baldwin with +16 with runners up Kevin Kennedy and Gavan Cullen +11. Best first game went to Archie Ellis and Joan Boyer with +15 and best second game went Jo Pettit and Ron Dean with +14. The jackpot did not go off and is worth approx. $280.00 this coming Friday. On Monday we have the finals of both the Mens' and Ladies singles Championship starting at 9.30am. In the Men's it is Peter Ware and Ian Smethurst doing battle and in the ladies it is Ruth Burnett and Kerry Ralph playing. Both should be great matches. Monday night is the commencement of night social bowls. Registration is with Colin Campbell by 6.30pm on the night. See more
10.01.2022 As remarked in the last news, the North of the Border Pennant is going ahead but only for 5 weeks during October, as October has five Saturdays. More details later. Official pennant for Murray Bowls, will start on 6th November for Midweek pennant and 7th November for Saturday pennant, now that restrictions have eased for Victorian residents. I would suggest all Victorian based bowlers get their Border Resident permits now and keep them up to date so there are no hiccups l...ater on. Obviously it means that names need to be down to play pennant and if you haven't done so yet, now would be a good time to do so. MEN AND WOMEN It is now less than two weeks before the North of the Border pennant will be played as the start date has been changed to 3rd. October. These games can be used as ideal practice for the upcoming season. Names need to be down NOW to enable teams to be selected and advised to all concerned. Games will start at 1.00 pm with first game being played at Tocumwal followed by Berrigan, Barooga, Finley and Jerilderie. There will be no catering to comply with Covid restrictions. Also, subject to confirmation the Murray Bowls AGM will be held Monday 19th. October and nominations will be sought for the various positions once all is confirmed. Monday 14th was ladies social bowls day with 15 attending. Ruth Burnett, Mary Hoog and Fran Thatcher won the day. Ladies trade day on the Wednesday was played at Berrigan and an all Barooga winning day, with both winning teams loving the well prepared greens. Carol Wigg, Elaine Blizzard and Ruth Burnett won the day with Cheryl Townsing, Carol Cox and Ruth Campbell coming in runners up. On Friday the 18th. Keith's Friday had 36 bowlers attending with a few of our Victorian members now able to attend it helped to swell the numbers. Winners of the day were Ruth Campbell and Graeme Hickey with +15. Runners up were Kevin Kennedy and Jill Toohey with +14. Best first game went to Gerald Rothe and Heather Crosthwaite with +11. Best second game went to Marita O'Kane and Peter Russell with +6. With the border restrictions being eased, we can now go ahead with club events. The men's sheets are on the notice board - they are:- Club singles championship entries close on 1/10/20 - the first round to be played on or before 11/10/20. The club pairs entries close on 16/10/20 - the first round to be played on or before 25/10/20. The club B grade singles entries close on 31/10/20 and the first round to be played on or before 8/11/20. Please assist the match committee by getting your names in early. See more
06.01.2022 Keith's Friday results for two weeks advised today as your correspondent was away last week and thank you to Ken Newton and Ray Wright for looking after things. Friday 4th September we had 24 players and the 2 game winners were Gerald Rothe and Geoff Brentnall with +19 with runners up being Brian Baldwin and Richard Polsczak with +15. Best first game winners were Alan Vinecombe and Kevin Kennedy with +10 and best second game winners were Jill Toohey and Val Toohey with +7 T...he jackpot did not go off. Results for last Friday the 11th. September saw 28 bowlers enjoy a social game of bowls with the winners being John Halphin and Col Bawdon with a very good score of +30. Runners up were Marita O'Kane and Ruth Burnett with +10 Best first game went to Liz Ewing and Alan Vinecombe with +6 and best second game winners were Pam O'Dwyer and Ken Anderson with +15 and 9 ends from Brian Baldwin and Jeff Nisbet also with +15 but with 7 ends. Again the Jackpot did not go off and is now worth $210.50 Friday the 25th, September the raffle will be drawn so if you have sold tickets and have not got them in then now is a good time to return tickets to John Bruce as soon as possible. Share the Wealth was held last Tuesday (8th Sept) and from information supplied it appears the winners were Roger Carter and Ian Cameron from Tocumwal and runners up were Gerald Rothe and John Bruce. The first ladies trade day was held on the Wednesday at Tocumwal and the only information I have is that G Bourke, L Bird and Anne ? Won with Carol Wigg, E Blizzard and Sue Kuffner were runner up. Next ladies trade day is at Berrigan. At a meeting of the 5 NSW clubs it has been decided that a competition, similar to pennant will be played in a trade day format. IE. 2 games of 10 ends. Games to be played on a Saturday starting at 1.00 pm costing $10.00 to play. No catering involved. Games will move each week to a different club to enable each club to host 2 games. First round will be on Oct 10th. and rounds will conclude on 12th. December. Teams will play a random draw format, not Club versus Club and in our case teams will be drawn from available players to ensure , as far as possible, even teams in ability. At this stage it has not been confirmed whether the other Clubs will do the same, but in any case it will be a game in pennant format. There is to be no mid week pennant type games, so it is available to both men and women who want to play on a Saturday afternoon so it is imperative that you have your name down on the list on the men's notice board if you want to play and are available on the first day, October 10. Saturday saw the start of the Murray River Challenge with 5 Clubs north of the Murray playing in a 2 bowl tournament style, pennant format match at two venues. This past week it was Tocumwal and Berrigan that began the challenge series and from Berrigan we had the team of Gerald Rothe, Allan Nichols, Ken Newton and Ruth Burnett come runners up to the Berrigan Team lead by Graeme Clements. No results received from the games at Tocumwal. It was a good hit out in preparation of the coming pennant season and will now be hell each Saturday in October. Names in if you want a game by Wednesday night please.
