25.01.2022 Fire danger rating for tomorrow 27/11/20

25.01.2022 Barooga 7 & 9 reponded to a grass and scrub fire to support Cobram Fire Brigade - CFA last night. Burning around 1 hectare it was brought under control quickly once crews arrived on scene

25.01.2022 Multiple haystack fires have occured in the last 7 days throughout the Southern Border Team. We ask that everyone please check their own haystacks for potential fire risk and encourage neighbours to do the same. Thank you.

25.01.2022 Spontaneous ignition is the leading cause of haystack fires, just one damp bale is enough to ignite an entire haystack. There are a number of things you can do to minimise the likelihood of a haystack fire starting on your property, including: Make sure hay is well cured before bailing... Know the history of the hay you purchase Keep haystacks to a limited size Monitor moisture and temperature of your hay regularly Watch for unusual odours - such as pipe tobacco, caramel, burning or musty smells. Keep your haystacks safe as the weather starts to warm.

24.01.2022 Please note the areas of above normal bushfire potential. Dec 2020 - Feb 2021 Australia’s climate is now under the influence of La Niña, and as a result the landscape and weather conditions continue to be vastly different to the previous two years. Weather conditions for the year to date, and the summer climate signals, mean that large parts of New South Wales west of the Great Dividing Range face above normal fire conditions, as well as grassland areas of the ACT and into north eastern Victoria. Grass and crop fires are the main concern in these locations for the summer months as the growth dries out in the warmer weather.

24.01.2022 Did you know that there is a legal responsibility to notify all adjoining neighbours (including those separated by a road or wa...terway) at least 24 hours before you light? To make notifying authorities easier you can now lodge an electronic notification of your intention to burn off by visiting https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify This simple web based program is suitable for both computers and smart devices. Should a Total Fire Ban be declared, people will receive an email and/or SMS message advising not to proceed with burn. For the moment residents of Albury, Greater Hume, Federation and Berrigan Shire Councils can contact the Albury FCC on 02 6051 1511 if you have any questions or need assistance. Things to remember: During the Bush Fire Danger Period or when your fire is likely to endanger a building, you must obtain a Fire Permit to burn which can be obtained from the NSW RFS or Fire & Rescue NSW. It is the responsibility of the person lighting the fire to ensure they are abiding by all Council and State government regulations and obligations. Failure to notify authorities or your neighbours could lead to the responsible person being issued with a $1,100 infringement or other more serious legal action being taken. 21.01.2022 Barooga responded to an interesting job this morning; after arriving on scene, members discovered a dog stuck under a house. With a small amount of shovel work the pooch was freed safely and looking forward to a fresh can of pedigree. We are coming into our 2020/21 fire season and now is a great time to start those fire ready jobs around home to get ready for the summer ahead Thanks again to everyone following our page and keeping upto date with what's happening around our brigade. Please give us a like and share to help get our messages out there.

21.01.2022 With vast quantities of hay having recently been cut and baled along with the above average rainfall being experienced it is inevitable that we will see more hay fires going into summer. Spontaneous combustion occurs when moist hay heats up due to a combination of natural microbial and chemical reactions. If enough air (oxygen) is present the moist hay may get hot enough to ignite, with fire then spreading through the stack or shed. ... Remember: Check your haystack by inserting a metal rod or stake into the hay. If the rod or stake comes out and is hot, you may have a problem. Regularly inspect haystacks, particularly in hay sheds. If possible store your hay in several locations on your property. Try to avoid storing machinery in the same shed; and Maintain firebreaks around your stored haystacks.

14.01.2022 Todays fire danger rating for the Southern Riverina is VERY HIGH.

14.01.2022 With winter fast approaching, we are moving into a dangerous time of the year for house fires due to heaters, clothes dryers etc. We at Barooga RFS, can only carry a limited amount of water on our appliance. When we arrive at a fire, our pump operator has to find a water hydrant to keep a constant and reliable supply of water to our pump as soon as possible. You can help us by looking after the hydrant near your house or work place. If you clear the area around hydrants of any grass, vegetation, gardens, rubbish and dirt, also ensure no one parks over a hydrant at any time. it will help us in an emergency.

Additionally, fire permits are not required for fires for the purpose of heating or cooking, provided that the fire is: > in a permanently constructed fireplace > at a site surrounded by ground that is cleared of all combustible materials for a distance of at least two metres all around > completely extinguished before leaving and > you have the landowners consent. If you are in doubt about whether you require a fire permit, contact the Southern Border Team (02) 6051 1511, or if you live in an urban area contact your nearest NSW Fire and Rescue Brigade station.
