18.01.2022 The DIFFERENCE between a horse TRAINER and a horse COMPETITOR, a discussion. While it is possible to be both at once, I find that most riders will likely be wei...ghted at least somewhat toward either being a rider who rides to compete, or a rider who rides to train. Take the trainer first---Her goal is pretty straightforward. It is to create improvement in how her horse performs whatever "tasks" are called for in her type of riding discipline, Her schooling will be aimed at making the horse into a more willing partner in the enterprise. She will want the horse to understand what she is asking. She will want the horse to be strong enough and fit enough to perform those requests without feeling undue stress. She will be trying to create "building blocks" by daily, weekly, monthly, yearly systematic application of gradually increasing complexity, but only in so far as her horse has mastered the prior steps. Watching the "pure" trainer mentality at work is watching a quiet, patient, step by step journey. Now the rider who is more of a "pure" competitor--- A competitor's primary goal is to do as well as possible in competition. Even better, it is to WIN as many competitions as possible. The overarching goal is the blue ribbon, the tricolor championship ribbon, the gold medal. The driven competitor NEEDS all the same skills and abilities from her horse that the trainer needs, but now comes the place where their paths forward may diverge. When the trainer feels a stumbling block on the road forward, she will be apt to think, "OK, what is causing this? What steps can I take to work through this? How can I solve this situation in ways that make sense in terms of both the physical and emotional well being of my horse? The competitor is likely to regard the same stumbling block and think, "This problem is an impediment to my goal." (which is some up-coming competition) "I can't have this issue in my way, so this horse can not be allowed to do this." So instead of taking as long as it takes, the competitor will be far more apt to cut corners, use stronger methods, and, in extreme cases, even use drugs or blind force to fix the "impediment." Two riders, two extreme examples, to illustrate a point. Of course, many riders are a degree of both. Some trainers never compete, and some top competitors are also kind, careful trainers. But we all know that the blind competitive "need" which drives some riders is the root cause of much that is wrong with all sorts of horse sports.

15.01.2022 "The rider should be so sensitive, to feel the back of the horse and should know if the horse has slept in a bad position in his stable. The tactful rider feels... if part of the horse is tired and knows how to engage this part without force. The horse is not a machine, it is a living being. Of course one rides him and he never forgets the movements he has learnt, but what is necessary to know is to always ask the commands correctly, without bad consequences to the body of the horse. When, at each session, one begins to work his horse, it is necessary to feel how he is that day and to know how to adapt the intensity of his aids from the assessment of the horse on that day and to know the combination of work which is suitable for that day. It is always necessary to complete a session of work thinking about the horse being in his best form the next day." (Nuno Oliveira, 1983) See more

14.01.2022 A piece of gold. The difference between pulling the horse around with the inside rein and riding him around with the inside leg to the outside rein. Your inside... leg is a conduit to the horses inside hind. application of the inside leg , not holding, will cause the inside hind to step forward with a slight inclination toward the outside rein. The outside leg supports and stops the hind quarter swinging out. It also puts the horse forward to the outside rein creating a sort of triangulation. Everything starts with forward. This is how we develop serious carrying capacity. remember horses are not designed to carry weight. Sitting on them is the most unnatural thing we do. it is our job to take the muscles they have and help them to use them in the most efficient way to do what we want. If you are interested in learning more about how to achieve what i have described in this post see the e book "horses from courses" ( Scott Brodie ) it relates mostly to my system for Re training horses of the track but these classical principles developed over thousands of years work for all horses. 09.01.2022 Introducing our Dressage Star Presenter - Pedro Torres! // We listened when you said you wanted a different type of Dressage Star Presenter at EQUITANA Mel...bourne this year... Pedro Torres is a world champion Working Equitation specialist who trains using classical dressage principles and by establishing a respectful and kind relationship with his horses. His name is synonymous in Europe with harmonious classical horse training. Pedro is excited to be coming out to Australia to present an EXCLUSIVE Dressage Masterclass and looks forward to helping you to build and enhance your relationship with your horses. The right training prepares horses and riders slowly for the next step in their education. If you force too much in the beginning it just becomes frustrating when they don’t do what you ask, because they are not ready. The most important advice is to be patient and to try to understand. Don’t try to make big steps, try to make solid steps. His philosophy on horse training has developed over the years into something the international equine world truly respects and admirers. We are so excited to be bringing Pedro out to share his incredible knowledge and training with you all. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn from one of the world’s best trainers and horsemen. You don’t want to miss this! Whether you are a dressage rider, showjumper, eventer, western or leisure rider, there is something to learn from Pedro! WHEN: Dressage Masterclass 9:30am Friday November 16. Tickets on sale NOW!
