24.01.2022 Great Stuff Alex! Alex is a proud Wurundjeri man, a young leader strong in his culture and passionate about his people. He was Barpa's first employee and is highly valued as a person and in his role as Building Coordinator.... Recently Alex lead the the NAIDOC Celebrations at his Cricket association. "Alex Kerr saw it as two teams coming together as one. As part of NAIDOC Week and for Cricket Australia’s reconciliation round, the Clayton Districts recruit and Victorian indigenous representative team batsman oversaw a traditional smoking ceremony at Meade Reserve before Saturday’s Cricket Southern Bayside match against Carnegie. Kerr said NAIDOC Week was an important occasion for my people and my culture’’, celebrating the history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. For us to be here today as one community and not just two teams is pretty special,’’ he said. Barefooted, the players stood in a circle around an image that Kerr said represented the first indigenous team to travel to England to play cricket. Kerr had lit a fire and invited players from both teams to place a leaf on it. The Aboriginal flag flew from the Clayton Districts clubrooms. This is my family’s fire,’’ he said. It has been brought down from my mother and her mother and so forth. It’s a big part of my life and I’d like to share this moment with you. It entails some responsibility once you do that. Once we do this we become one people, instead of being divided all the time. We’re all here to live the best life we possibly can. If we do that together we’ll definitely make some changes to this country." #NAIDOC2020 #Wurundjeri [Full article is subscriber only]
