18.01.2022 Beautiful Barrenjoey

18.01.2022 Avalon Beach 1860's Hard to imagine Avalon Beach in the 1800's when "St Michaels Arch", was a landmark feature.... The top of the arch collapsed during a tremendous gale that lashed the coast for days in 1867. The remainder deteriorated in 1959. Ref: Daily Telegraph, 10 April 2014. These details come from the original watercolour painting which is for currently sale NSW (unfortunately a very high asking price of $2900 : ( Watercolour, signed lower left, obscured title in colour pencil verso, 34.2 x 56.5cm. Tear to left portion of image, slight scuffs and foxing to upper portion. http://www.joseflebovicgallery.com/

16.01.2022 This is not the sort of thing I ever thought I would share on a page dedicated to our beautiful northern beaches. But the story is so powerful and compelling,... and so valuable - perhaps even more so, because it contrasts so directly with the freedom and quality of life we enjoy. So, in apologising for breaking a commitment to the home we love, I hope you might also be moved by this extraordinary young girl, the quality of her courage and simple honesty. Although the video is not new it seems all the more relevant against the current world crisis while we begin another wonderful day and a life of freedom and rare privilege on Sydney's Northern Beaches this story of generational human oppression is all the more profound. Thank you https://www.facebook.com/thepeoplebox/videos/444894925870008/

14.01.2022 During the Second World War fears Japan would attack Australia and target Sydney saw coastal defences set in place on all Sydneys prominent coastal access points incl South Head, North Head, Middle head... and also West Head among others. Gun Turrets were supported by anti-tank fortifications, meshing of many beaches and anti submarine were put in place to stop access to Sydney Harbour and Pittwater. The nets failed spectacularly when 3 midget submarines got past the nets and managed to sink a Manly Ferry abs cause other damage before 2 were sunk and another damaged. The 3rd sub headed north from the harbour intending to try and rendezvous with the mother sub. I understand the small crew all died from the wounds before the sub finally sank off Bungan Beach (I think) Here is a photo of the net across Pittwater. I understand the founder of Hills won a tender to buy the steel netting after the war and much of the steel was re-transformed into famous Hills Hoist clothes lines.

13.01.2022 Maybe a little outside our Barrenjoey interest, but who can resist a look back in time to 1906 & a very different perspective of life back thr. from the press and push of city living today. (San Francisco not Sydney thanks Karen Martin)

13.01.2022 Something to take you back, to simpler, easier carefree days, far from these terrible COVID times

13.01.2022 Well worth a read for anyone interested in the background of Palm Beach landholdings. 120 years ago all of the private property in Palm Beach and Whale Beach was sold ... for just 500 pounds. I guess way back then it was a considerable sum, but even so, todays land values - including many in excess of $5 million each for premier Iluka, Ocean & Barrenjoey Road, reflect a staggering increase. The accompanying images show an early car making its way up to Observatory Point (just up the hill from todays Palm Beach wharf). The other shows the Custom Station wharf which was located beneath Barrenjoey headland (a short distance from the Rangers house today) With credit to John Relph who posted this on Lost Manly and the Northern Beaches.

12.01.2022 Vale Joe Romeo Its sad to note the passing of Joe Romeo this morning. Along with many others across the Northern Beaches... Its been my privilege to have spent many hours with Joe and his family and to have known the rare quality of this man, his passion for the community, his personal warmth and charm, and his great love he his wonderful family. Heres to a genuinely wonderful man, a loving husband to Mary, father to Frank and Maria and beautiful nonno to his wonderful family. Our thoughts are with you always.
