23.01.2022 My special 'Krug' during rush hour on the freeway this morning.

20.01.2022 This started out as 2 paragraphs, and look what happened All equines are vulnerable to some extent when they are being exposed to new ideas and human expectat...ions, and it isn’t any different for the humans that we teach. Learning is meant to be enjoyable, but there is always some degree of stress when learning anything, which with training horses and humans involves first getting the brain and then the body around new knowledge and skills. It is crucial to communicate clearly, using various forms of communication including words, sounds, gestures, treats, whatever helps, to try and avoid confusion in the horse. Wouldn’t it be great if we could teach horses a language and how to speak. Traumatised, and as a consequence mentally damaged horses, cannot unlearn what may have happened to them, or what a previous human or humans may have taught them, if it is different from what you NOW want the horse or pony to know. You can’t just dig out unwanted knowledge and experiences from a horses brain, so we proceed to teach what we or the owner would like their horse to know in their new life, and the more education the deeper the previous knowledge and possibly undesirable experiences become. Do horses suffer from PTSD? (Post traumatic stress disorder) Absolutely. So we might be burying unwanted knowledge and experiences under new confidence building knowledge, but sometimes something will trigger their previous life experience in a flash. Being calm, more often than not ignoring what has happened if safe to do so, a distraction (a rattle of the treat bag and a treat for distraction) and getting on with the training as if nothing happened, is usually the best approach. We are very particular in the way we train, re-train and treat horses, using classical principles and nearly 50 years of experience to ensure the best foundation for each individual horse and owner to build upon, no matter what the level of education, from just starting out to Grand Prix level. Flying changes, going wrong in various ways, is something that we are often asked to help with, and are the bane of many riders lives. This is another example of setting the horse up with the right knowledge and experience thus avoiding what can be a big problem and is sometimes not fixable. It is better to have a sound foundation with logical training than going through re-starting a horse that is confused and/or been treated unfairly! If interested in our training methods, including ground work, work in hand and all ridden work, please enquire about lessons with your own horse by starting with a call to Barrie on 0400 639 909. Barrie does travel depending on how far, and if he has time in his busy schedule, but depending on individual horse and rider situations we sometimes recommend starting out at our Academy where our facilities aid the schooling and r-schooling of the equines and humans we have been asked to help. We also have 4 highly schooled horses for riders wanting to experience and master knowledge, and aids, before trying to teach their own horse, eg.all the two track work, rein back, flying changes, passage, pirouettes, Spanish Walk, etc. etc. etc.. A human trying to learn, and teach a horse at the same time, is not exactly ideal, or fair on any horse if it can be avoided.

08.01.2022 2021 Equestrian Leader, Issy (Year 12), has fully embraced her leadership role and understands the importance of mentoring our riders. On Sunday 22 August, Issy... held a dressage day, having arranged the venue - the magnificent Mt George Equestrian Centre - and booked coach, Barrie Stratton, a highly esteemed ‘A’ level dressage judge and Judge Educator. Five Seymour students rode dressage tests and Barrie scored and critiqued their performances. Feedback was shared, and Barrie then coached the riders through the test again, helping them to improve. This was a great benefit to both the riders and the members of the equestrian team who came to support their teammates. It was a valuable opportunity for the girls to make connections with and learn from a specialist in their chosen sport. Well done for organising this event Issy. You are a great role model for your team members. See more
