24.01.2022 Residents across New South Wales are urged to monitor weather reports and health advice as the state is expected to experience heatwave conditions in the coming days. As the weather heats up, motorists are also reminded it’s not only an offence for children or pets to be left unattended in a vehicle, it can be deadly.... Remember to; Stay well-hydrated Avoid alcohol and hot or sugary drinks Limit your physical activity Try to stay out of the sun during the hottest part of the day Wear light, loose-fitting clothing made from natural fibres like cotton Regularly check your forecasts from the Bureau of Meteorology on radio, TV, internet or App Get advice from your doctor about whether your medication and/or your medical conditions may affect what you should do if it gets extremely hot Make sure you know who you are going to call (who may need help, and who could provide help to you if needed); make a list of telephone numbers and make sure they are current. If you can, it's a good idea to spend some time in an air-conditioned building. 23.01.2022 Avoiding the crowds at busy shopping centres is just one of the reasons many of us prefer to shop online during this time. Be warned, scammers don’t take holidays! They rely on you being busy and letting your guard down when purchasing online. Scammers often set up legitimate-looking websites or social media stores to trick you into handing over your money or personal details.... So if you're taking part of the Box Day sales online, here are some tips: * Make your online purchase from known legitimate sites that offer secure payments and offer you a customer protection. * Avoid conducting direct bank transfers or use of international money transfer service providers that do not give you a customer protection. *Please be aware that if you step outside of regulated payment protection rules, you will not be protected and reimbursed for your lost funds. * Check the information about the seller on online public forums for the review and opinions about the seller. https://www.scamwatch.gov.au//buying/online-shopping-scams

21.01.2022 The NSW Government, together with the NSW Police Force, has announced a $1 million reward for information into the murder of Hunter woman, Melissa Hunt, more th...an 26 years ago. The body of Melissa Hunt, then aged 22, was found near the weir wall of Burrenjim Dam, Bluegum Creek via Stockrington, on Monday 25 April 1994. A post mortem examination revealed she died from severe head injuries. Strike Force Impey, comprised of detectives from the Lake Macquarie Police District and the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad, was formed to investigate her death; however, no arrests have been made. Following a Coronial Inquest in 1998, the matter was sent to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for review and referred to the Unsolved Homicide Unit. A formal review of the investigation was conducted under the new unsolved framework and is now under reinvestigation by detectives attached to Strike Force Circulo. As inquiries continue, police are renewing their appeal to the community to come forward with any information that may assist detectives with their investigation. Minister for Police and Emergency Services, David Elliott, said he hopes the $1 million NSW Government incentive will bring detectives a step closer to finding answers for Melissa’s family. The NSW Government pledges a $1 million reward in the hope that it will assist police in their efforts to get to the bottom of this horrific crime, and that it will go some way in delivering justice for Melissa and her family, Mr Elliott said. The community will not, and should not, forget the tragic circumstances surrounding Melissa’s disappearance almost three decades ago. I urge anyone with even the seemingly smallest piece of information to come forward. Homicide Squad Commander, Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty, said Strike Force Circulo investigators have conducted a thorough review of the case to explore all possible lines of inquiry. In October this year, officers returned to the Burrenjim Dam with specialist police from the Forensic Evidence and Technical Services Command to conduct a full review of the original crime scene, Det Supt Doherty said. Items of interest that were recovered during initial inquiries have also undergone further forensic testing, to ensure every avenue of investigation is identified and pursued. Detectives have also been liaising with interstate law enforcement partners as we believe there are associates and witnesses residing in other states including Queensland, Victoria and South Australia that are yet to come forward and speak with police. As inquiries into Melissa’s death continue, detectives are urging anyone with information to contact police so we may provide much-needed answers and closure for Melissa’s family, Det Supt Doherty said. Melissa’s brother, Mr Peter Hallett, said he hoped the reward may help detectives uncover new leads to finally provide justice for his sister and family. Melissa was deeply loved by our family and we have never stopped missing her and desperately wishing that her life had not been cut short, Mr Hallett said. We should not just have memories of Melissa’s beautiful dark eyes, her mischievous laugh, musical talent, eye for detail, passion for writing and fierce love for her family and two children we should all be able to hold her now. After 26 years of despairing grief, we are hoping that someone will come forward and help police identify those responsible for her death. Melissa was robbed of her life and of her right to know and love her children, and as a family we cannot rest until justice is served, Mr Hallett said. Anyone with information that may assist Strike Force Circulo detectives is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. Information is treated in strict confidence. The public is reminded not to report crime via NSW Police social media pages.
20.01.2022 Here at the Barrier Police District we are working towards improving the safety of the community for everyone and how reporting to the NSW Police Force is improving. We understand there has been several reports of persons attempting to steal from motor vehicles on the street and in driveways in recent days. We thank the residents who have reported these incidents to the local police, but there have been some reports made by concerned residents on social media only. We can ap...preciate that residents want to get the message out to the community, alerting them to check their cars are locked and secured, but it is also really important Police know when and where this is occurring. By reporting these and other crimes to Police, not only can we assess for the likelihood of fingerpints and DNA, but we can actively task our Officers to these areas for more patrols in the hope of preventing further thefts and arresting the culprits. There are several ways you can report the crime to the NSW Police and its as easy as walking in to your nearest Police Station, making a phone call or logging onto the computer. On-line via: NSW Police Community Portal; Phone: Crimestoppers 1800 333 000, or the Police Assistance Line 131444 Please help us catch these culprits and make the Barrier Police District a safe community. https://portal.police.nsw.gov.au/s/login/ https://www1.police.nsw.gov.au/cs.aspx

20.01.2022 Summer is a popular time for going on holidays, and we are reminding people to take some time to assess their home security before they head away. Most of the recommended precautions are very simple, particularly just checking to make sure doors and windows are locked and secured an unlocked window in an empty home, full of valuables, is an opportunistic thief’s dream. We also recommend limiting what you post on social media about your holiday, especially if your home will ...be unattended for an extended period. It’s relatively inexpensive to put a good lock on your letterbox and ask someone you trust to empty it regularly or organise to have your mail held at your local post office while your'e away. The NSW Police Force has a wealth of information about safety and security, including fact sheets, available at: https://www.police.nsw.gov.au/safety_a/safe_and_secure/home If you have concerns about possible criminal activity in your local neighbourhood, call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page: https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au/

17.01.2022 SCAM ALERT! We’ve had several reports of scammers calling people from what appear to be trusted NSW Police Force numbers and threatening the call recipients with fines or arrest. These scammers are using technology to make it appear that the calls originate from legitimate police phone numbers; a practice known as ID spoofing. The caller impersonates a NSW Police Force officer and states that the person receiving the call has an outstanding fine or warrant. The scammer demand...s a form of payment to prevent arrest or further court action. The NSW Police Force will never call a member of the public and demand payment over the phone in order to avoid going to court or being arrested. If you get an unexpected call from someone who states they're from the police, and starts asking for personal details or threatens you, please hang up. If you’re concerned, you can always verify by contacting your local police or the Police Assistance Line directly on 131 444. 16.01.2022 Congratulations to Sarah Donnelley from Wilcannia Central School who has won the ARIA award for best Music Teacher. As the song went online with verses rewritten to capture the lockdown experience in Wilcannia, Sarah devised a way to overcome unreliable phone and internet services and link the pupils, joining nine kilometres of construction safety tape through the dusty streets of Wilcannia and organising the kids to come outside and take hold.

15.01.2022 Police encourage responsible use of district's waterways as temperatures rise Police are urging the public to remain vigilant while enjoying the region’s waterways this summer, following the launch of a state-wide police operation in Western Region. Operation Summer Safe is a high-visibility operation which was launched in Western Region on Sunday 1 November 2020, to increase community engagement with the public during summer months in regional NSW.... Officers attached to Barrier Police District will have an increased presence around the district’s dams and rivers in an effort to monitor the public’s safety in what often become a popular attraction during the warmer months. Police will also be addressing antisocial behaviour at licensed premises through high visibility patrols. Barrier Police District Commander, Superintendent Andrew Spliet, is urging communities within the district to be aware of potential risks associated with the approaching summer months. Last summer we had some drownings near our river communities, some of those incidents involved alcohol and people not wearing life jackets, Supt Spliet said. If you plan on drinking alcohol, stay out of the water, and consider the repercussions should you take control of a watercraft. We are asking the public to be safe and wear a life jacket if you are not familiar with rivers and other waterways as your safety and the safety of other community members during the summer months is our focus. Western Region Commander, Assistant Commissioner Geoff McKechnie APM, said police are ready for the influx of visitors to Western NSW in the coming months. Western Region is a playground for holiday goers and recreational hunting enthusiasts during the summer months and we know from previous years that our region’s unique attractions draw in visitors from all over the state, Assistant Commissioner McKechnie APM said. With that comes increased risks associated with the use of our inland waterways, hunting grounds and rural roads. This year the public must also ensure compliance with current Public Health Orders and for us to move through this phase of the pandemic, our communities and visitors to the region need to work with us not against us. We certainly want people to enjoy themselves and everything that our region has to offer, but in a responsible and considerate manner. Road safety will also be a focus of Operation Summer Safe, with Traffic and Highway Patrol officers to assist police districts with targeting speeding, drink and drug driving, driving while fatigued, mobile phone and other traffic offences. Always drive to the conditions and never get behind the wheel tired; your beachside or vineyard holiday will still be there, even if you are a few hours late, Assistant Commissioner McKechnie APM said. Operation Summer Safe will be continually running from now until the end of summer in February 2021.

14.01.2022 MOVIE NIGHT, WILCANNIA POLICE STATION 7.30 PM FRIDAY 8TH JANUARY 2021 Wilcannia Police in conjunction with the staff from Wings Drop In Centre will be hosting a movie night this Friday night. Doors will open from 7.30pm with Staff from Wings also out and about picking people up. We will all grab something to eat and drink before the movie starts, as soon as darkness hits. I have three movies and people attending will select their preference and the most votes will see that mo...vie played. Our teenage young people are welcomed, and I realise some may just want to drop in for a burger, a quick chat and head off. Leading into the school holidays I was a little concerned about boredom leading to young people doing something may may not necessarily do. Wings Drop In was closed, the pool was open only for a few hours on the weekend, our Night Patrol was not in a position to start, the river is down, and even our Coffee Pod was shut. I can say that more than two weeks into our Holidays we have had one break in. Your local police are eager to know details of who was involved, and any information is welcomed. A thank you to our young people for their best behaviour, and what I would expect, knowing them. ENTRY to our movie night is for local residents only, given mine and community concerns regarding COVID. Adults are welcome to come also, to watch the movie, or give us a hand. Temperature testing will be conducted and sanitiser will be available. Our young people are well versed in this from fit for life. Although this is a Movie Night post, I need to mention to the adults that domestic violence is up, and whilst I don’t accept this as an excuse, most if not all was fuelled by the heavy consumption of alcohol prior to the assaults. We have charged numerous people for domestic violence in the last month, this violence needs to stop. Some respect to those that at least acknowledged what they did was wrong, put their hand up, and surrendered to police. Locally and also throughout the Barrier Police District we are continually looking at ways to support the Victims, and also placing pressure on the offenders to do the right thing. Only last month Barrier Police District, together with police brought in from Western Region ran an operation, part of which targeted a number of DV offenders in Broken Hill. Thank you to the community support we get in trying to keep people safe. See you tomorrow night, Chief Inspector Tony Moodie.
13.01.2022 Domestic violence is never acceptable. If you, or someone you know, is experiencing domestic violence, call police on 131 444. In an emergency, always call Triple Zero (000).

We’re seeing a few spikes in the number of people presenting to hospital with gastro symptoms in Broken Hill, Ms Stanley said. The best defence is to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and running water for at least 20 seconds before handling and eating food, and always wash your hands after using the toilet, changing nappies or assisting someone who has diarrhoea or vomiting. Infants or children in childcare or school who develop vomiting or diarrhoea should stay at home for at least 48 hours after their symptoms have stopped, as should staff members and anyone whose work involves handling food or looking after children, the elderly or patients. Symptoms of viral gastroenteritis include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, abdominal pain, headache and muscle aches. They can take up to three days to develop and usually last between one or two days, sometimes longer. The main treatment for viral gastroenteritis is to rest and drink plenty of fluids. Most people recover without complications, but gastroenteritis can be serious for infants, people with suppressed immune systems and the elderly. Anyone recovering from gastroenteritis should avoid visiting hospitals and aged care facilities to avoid spreading the infection to those most vulnerable. Any person living in a household affected by gastroenteritis should refrain from visiting these high-risk areas until at least 48 hours after the last person in the household has recovered. 08.01.2022 Wilcannia Fit for Life Thursday 10th December Postponed Sad to say I have had to postpone tomorrow’s Fit for Life in Wilcannia. Unfortunately things out of our control have meant tomorrow can not go ahead. It was to be our last session for the year, however we will now run our last session next Thursday, 17th December. Wilcannia’s Fit for Life started on the 3rd September 2019, with start up training and assistance by Broken Hill PCYC and our Police Youth Command. We had 14 ...young people to our first session. Now more than a year on we regularly get 25 young people each week, out of bed early, lots of physical activity, a great breakfast, then off to school. We even pushed through during COVID, and now it’s just the norm to have your tempature taken and hands washed. We have some new ideas for next year, so looking forward to a great 2021. I have had a drive around to tell most people, but please share locally for the ones that were not home. I have attached a picture looking back to one of our first sessions last year. Kind regards, Chief Inspector Tony Moodie

06.01.2022 With New Years Eve in a few days, we humans get excited about fireworks, but many of our pets are afraid of them and many try to run away, sometimes injuring themselves in the process. Many of these pets, mostly dogs can end up several kilometres from home. Dogs have been known to jump through plate glass windows to escape loud noises, and easily jump over, or dig their way under fences that would normally contain them. Thanks to the RSPCA, here are some tips you can take to ...ease the stress your pets may experience during the fireworks. What can I do for my dog? * Prepare early. * Talk to your vet about the treatment options available for managing noise phobias - ask them about any new treatment options. * Take your dog out for exercise before the fireworks start e.g. reasonably long walk, then after a couple of hours you can feed a meal. A tired and well-fed dog will likely be less anxious during the night. If you can, stay home to be with your pet. * Let your dog be with you and try to be calm and normal. Avoid fussing over your pet excessively but try to engage them in normal activities such as playing. Reward your dog for their calm behaviour, rewards include giving dog treats and their favourite dog toy. * Close the blinds/curtains, create a comfortable hiding place and allow your dog to go there to feel safe, put on some music or the TV to help mask the noise outside, and distract your dog with games and food. * Dogs who panic can choke themselves on a collar or lead, so never tether your dog during these times and never use a choke chain to restrain your dog. * Make sure your dog is micro-chipped and that your contact details are up to date on the microchip register. Also ensure they are wearing an ID tag so they can be easily returned if they accidentally escape. * Direct supervision is important to help prevent injury or escape. If you cannot supervise your dog on the night consider making alternative arrangements so your dog will be supervised by a responsible person directly or consider boarding your dog so they will be safe. What about cats, rabbits and other pets? Cats should be kept indoors during fireworks displays. Most cats will find somewhere safe to hide and will usually venture out when the noise stops. Make sure you cat is microchipped and your details are up to date on the microchip register in case they wander and become lost. Rabbits and other small animals like guinea pigs should be safely housed during the fireworks display. Horses are particularly vulnerable to bolting when exposed to fireworks. If possible they should be securely stabled, or removed to a different location away from the fireworks display, and the risk of physical harm minimised. Remove any sharp objects that might injure a panicking animal, cover stable windows to hide the sight of the fireworks and dim the noise, and make sure you supply food and water

05.01.2022 Barrier Police District residents urged to celebrate New Year’s Eve from home The NSW Police Force is encouraging the Barrier Police District community to stay local this New Year’s Eve and enjoy celebrations from home. A high-visibility policing operation will be in place on Thursday (31 December 2020) and Friday (1 January 2021), to ensure the safety of the community.... Locally, it will involve general duties and plain clothes police from across the district, as well as Traffic and Highway Patrol officers. The warmer weather will likely result in people choosing to celebrate the New Year on and near the waterways throughout Barrier Police District. The NSW Police Force is asking anyone celebrating New Year’s Eve on the water to take extra care and look after yourselves, family and friends. Barrier Police District Commander, Acting Superintendent Darren Brand, said police will be out and about across the community focusing on public safety, alcohol-related crime and anti-social behaviour. Although this year’s celebrations look very different to previous events, we still want everyone to see out 2020 safely and have a memorable start to 2021, A/Supt Brand said. We are urging residents to stay local and celebrate at home this year, ensuring the Public Health Order guidelines for gatherings are followed. For those who do go out and about, expect to see plenty of police officers. Our waterways are a great place to socialise and celebrate with family and friends. Unfortunately, experience tells us, that they can also be a very dangerous place if people don’t take care and look after each other. Police will have a presence on our waterways this New Year’s Eve to ensure those operating vessels are doing so responsibly. Police will be conducting random breath and drug testing to ensure our waterways are safe for everyone to enjoy. We have zero tolerance for dangerous, criminal or anti-social behaviour, so anyone caught putting other people’s lives at risk, or spoiling the fun for others, will be dealt with swiftly. Our best advice is to plan ahead how you are getting to and from your selected celebrations whether it be public transport, pre-arranged transport or organising a designated driver, A/Supt Brand said. For more information on the Public Health Orders for gatherings, please visit; https://www.nsw.gov.au//what-you-can-and-cant-do-under-rul Hot weather is expected over the next few days and police are urging revellers to keep informed on the conditions, look after their health and remember the four key messages to keep healthy in the heat: 1. Drink plenty of water (limit hot, sugary, or alcoholic beverages) 2. Keep cool (stay in the air conditioning, if possible) 3. Take care of others (visit or contact those at risk of heat-related illness) 4. Have a plan (know who to contact if you need assistance and seek medical advice if you feel unwell). Visit www.bom.gov.au for updated weather forecasts and warnings.

Officers within Western Region will commence Operation Fair Play on Sunday (11 October 2020) until Saturday 5 December 2020, focusing on domestic violence.... Operation Fair Play was established in June 2020 to focus on domestic violence in what has been recognised by the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOCSAR), as a period with increased instances of domestic violence. Women and children in NSW are statistically almost 40 per cent more likely to become victims during this period, and where the use of alcohol has also been noted. At the same time there will a focus on the actioning of outstanding warrants on all domestic violence offenders. Western Region Sponsor for Domestic and Family Violence and New England Police District Commander, Detective Superintendent Steve Laksa, said there is no excuse for abuse. NSW Police are vested with the responsibility to ensure victims of domestic violence are protected and Operation Fair Play provides an opportunity for our police to ensure compliance of domestic violence orders, especially those with conditions restricting the consumption of alcohol and contact whilst intoxicated, Det Supt Laksa said.
