22.01.2022 Punters have vowed never to bet on horse racing again after seeing an animal in convulsions as he died after falling on his neck in the Grand National. Up For Review was the first horse to be killed at the prestigious race since 2012, and one of three fatalities in the final 48 hours of the three-day event. About 70,000 spectators at Aintree and millions more television viewers saw the horse land on his neck at the first fence, before appearing to thrash about in pain.... 21.01.2022 MORE THAN 22 DEAD HORSES FOUND IN QUEENSLAND PADDOCK A total greater than 22 horses and a further eight emaciated animals have been found on a Queensland property in what authorities have described as a "distressing" situation. Inspectors and a vet have visited the property in the Gowrie Mountain area, west of Toowoomba, following complaints, and directed the horses' owner to feed them.... All of these horses, some former racehorses have died on a Queensland property with another eight in an emaciated state. Biosecurity Queensland deputy director-general and chief biosecurity officer Malcolm Letts said it was "distressing" to see the animals, some of which are former racehorses, in such a condition. The issue was first referred to the department by the RSPCA on January 6. The person contracted to look after the animals by the owner - who is not based on the site - was contacted the following day, with inspectors and a vet organised to visit the property three days later. Advertisement "The horses are now being fed and cared for ... in accordance with the directive that's been issued," he said. "We will continue to monitor the situation over the coming days and weeks." "It's important to note that it's not simply a case of throwing hay to animals that are in this sort of condition, you need a specific feeding regime to ensure that they get well as quickly as possible." The department works with owners to improve with health of animals through feeding directives, after which it can look to prosecution as a "last resort". Mr Letts said if the owner continued to follow the directives "as they are at the moment" the remaining horses would likely make a full recovery. But the response to the animal deaths so far has been "totally unacceptable", according to the Australian Farm Animal Rescue Matters founder Marjorie Pagani. Ms Pagani said the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries had been notified of the situation earlier in January, but took five days to visit the property - in which time one more horse died. She said she had taken it upon herself to buy feed and mineral blocks for the animals as the food supplied by the horses’ owner was inadequate. Community members are helping to lay the supplies out on the property with permission from the landowner. "If it weren't for community support, more horses would die - and might still," she said. "The situation is critical." Volunteer foster carers were standing by to take the group, Ms Pagani said, though the owner had refused to surrender the animals. The owner has been contacted for comment. Of the dead and emaciated animals, seven have been identified as former racehorses, according to Queensland Racing Integrity Commissioner Ross Barnett. However, their owner "is not and has not" been a licensed industry participant. Follow this link to the Brisbane Times: https://www.brisbanetimes.com.au//twenty-two-dead-horses-f

12.01.2022 WILD BRUMBIES STARVING IN CENTRAL VICTORIA AS PARKS VICTORIA DO NOTHING, LOCALS SAY. The unusual combination of drought conditions and environmental flooding has left more than 150 brumbies in the Barmah National Park north-east of Echuca in dire condition. Local residents say that Parks Victoria are failing to address the ongoing problem, implementing a management plan they say consists of delaying action long enough that the brumbies health becomes so poor they can then sho...ot them on sight. Their bodies are left to rot. The Barmah Brumby Preservation Group, made up of concerned local residents, are currently rendering on-ground support for the starving and sick horses. Mark Norman, chief conservation scientist, Parks Victoria, said he understood people’s concerns however regulations prevent the feeding of, or interference with, animals in National Parks. Volunteer groups report lengthy response times by Parks Victoria, leaving community members to comfort the dying animals while they await someone legally allowed to euthanise the animal. Six foals have been rescued and sent to Hoofs2010 a charity working to save and promote Australian bush horses. The group has established a Go-Fund me page to raise funds for ground support, aiming to raise $25,000. Follow the story here: https://amp.9news.com.au//ecdb548b-7d06-4075-86d6-8887de48

07.01.2022 FRANCE TO BAN CULLING OF UNWANTED MALE CHICKS BY END OF 2021 France has pledged to outlaw the practice of culling unwanted male chicks by the end of 2021, as part of animal welfare reforms. About seven billion male chicks - not wanted for meat or eggs - are killed around the world each year, usually in shredding machines or by gas.... The government said new methods were emerging that would make it possible to test the sex of embryos inside the egg. But some campaigners said the reforms did not go far enough. 06.01.2022 WORLD’S FIRST NO-KILL EGGS GO ON SALE IN BERLIN The world’s first ever no-kill eggs are now on sale in Berlin after German scientists found an easy way to determine a chick’s gender before it hatches, in a breakthrough that could put an end to the annual live shredding of billions of male chicks worldwide. The patented Seleggt process can determine the sex of a chick just nine days after an egg has been fertilised. Male eggs are processed into animal feed, leaving only fem...ale chicks to hatch at the end of a 21-day incubation period. If you can determine the sex of a hatching egg you can entirely dispense with the culling of live male chicks, said Seleggt managing director Dr Ludger Breloh, who spearheaded the four-year programme by German supermarket Rewe Group to make its own-brand eggs more sustainable. It’s not about winning or losing, he added of the worldwide race to find a marketable solution. We all have the same goal, which is to end the culling of chicks in the supply chain. Of course, there’s competition, but it’s positive in that it keeps us all focused on that goal. An estimated 4-6 billion male chicks are slaughtered globally every year because they serve no economic purpose. Some are suffocated, others are fed alive into grinding or shredding machines to be processed into reptile food. 03.01.2022 RETIRED RACING GREYHOUNDS PUT DOWN FOR BEING 'TIMID', 'NOISY' OR 'HATING CATS' Whereas previously greyhound owners required the consent of the regulator to euthanase animals, now they must only notify that they made genuine and reasonable attempts to rehome a healthy greyhound. This weakening of safeguards has been initiated by the new Greyhound Welfare and Integrity Commission NSW. Guardian Australia has obtained internal Greyhound Racing NSW records revealing that greyhou...nd owners rely on vague or spurious rationales for killing retired dogs. Among the notifications of retirement submitted to the regulator between April 2017 and May 2018, some owners simply say rehoming is not suitable because of the dog’s temperament, without any detailed description of behaviour. Other documents justify euthanasia on the ground that the dog did not like cats for example. The Greyhound Welfare and Integrity Commission, by moving from a requirement for permission to one of notification only, has extinguished the opportunity to intervene to save the dog’s life. Instead, it will only be notified of spurious grounds where it could take action after the dog is dead. Follow the story here: https://amp.theguardian.com//retired-racing-greyhounds-put
