FLS is the Law Council’s largest specialist section and has developed a reputation as a source of sound advice for those responsible for framing family law legislation. If elected, Scott’s focus will be on supporting the FLS’ longstanding commitment to ensuring that the community has confidence in an accessible and effective ...family law system. With more than 25 years’ experience working in firms large and small, regional and boutique, Scott is confident that he will represent the views of all family law practitioners throughout Australia. If you are a member of the FLS, we encourage you to support Scott’s nomination by voting at this year’s election. Voting closes on Friday 27 November. Good luck Scott!

23.01.2022 Last week for R UK OK? Day 2020, we continued the conversation around mental health and were fortunate to have Damien Coates, CEO of DUAL Asia Pacific, join us virtually to discuss his own mental health story. Damien is an ambassador for Black Dog Institute and has conquered over 10,000kms in gruelling marathons, walks, the Kokoda trail and ultra-long bike rides, which has helped raise more than $200,000 for vital research, prevention and treatment of mental illness in Austra...lia. Damien’s presentation was an inspiring recount of his own story, and a powerful reminder of how important it is to open a dialogue and reduce the stigma around talking about our mental health. As both a father and CEO, Damien also discussed how vital it is to normalise these types of conversations with children from an early age, and to provide an environment that encourages openness in both our personal and professional lives. Thank you Damien for all the great work you do, and for sharing your personal mental health journey with us! If you’d like to know more about the Black Dog Institute visit www.teamblackdog.org.au, or if you’re experiencing difficulties with mental health, don’t be afraid to reach out to Lifeline (13 11 14) or BeyondBlue (1300 22 4636) for support.

23.01.2022 This week is NAIDOC Week, and together BN are celebrating the history, culture and achievements of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year’s theme Always was, Always will be serves as a reminder of the spiritual and cultural connection that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have shared with this country for thousands of years, as they have occupied and cared for the land. BN is committed to recognising and supporting the success of Ind...igenous people both within and beyond the legal industry. This week, we’ll be celebrating NAIDOC Week internally across the firm and highlighting some of the great Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, committees and organisations supported by BN. Happy NAIDOC Week 2020! To find out more about NAIDOC Week and to get involved, visit their website here: https://www.naidoc.org.au/

22.01.2022 Since the Closing the Gap initiative began 10 years ago, some progress has been made to improve the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. But there is still work to be done in achieving equity in Indigenous health. In this episode, BN's Melissa Carius (nee Edwards) is joined by Avelina Tarrago to discuss the cultural and legal issues for health practitioners who have patients of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island background. Avelina is a barrister with North Quarter Lane Chambers in Brisbane, and President of the Indigenous Lawyers Association of Queensland. Listen here: https://bncheckup.podbean.com/

20.01.2022 We’re thrilled to announce that BN’s Family Law team has once again been named a First Tier Family & Divorce Law Firm in Australia in the annual Doyle's Guide listings. These listings celebrate firms practising within the areas of family law, matrimonial, parenting, property and spousal maintenance matters across all Australian legal markets who have been identified by their peers for their expertise. This recognition follows the individual lawyer and state law firm listings announced earlier this month, where BN received a raft of recognition. A huge congratulations to our Family Law team! 16.01.2022 In the spirit of the festive season, this week our Brisbane Health Law team hosted a gingerbread house building session with our clients in support of Harrisons Little Wings (HLW). HLW is a not-for-profit organisation providing vital resources, peer support and practical support for women and their families who receive a poor or fatal diagnosis during pregnancy or other maternal health issues. 16.01.2022 Yesterday, a team from Barry.Nilsson., Chubb and local insurance brokers put on their trainers and hit the pavement (social distancing style) to participate in the Rotary virtual fun run and raise vital funds for Foodbank Queensland. Thanks to everyone that participated and special mention to Stephen Carey for transforming into the PurplePeopleFeeder and helping champion the cause. Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, Foodbank has seen a substantial increase in the demand for f...ood relief. It’s a sad reality that in the last 12 months, 5 million Australians have experienced a food shortage and at least once a week 3 in 10 Australians go a whole day without eating. Just two weeks ago, the team set an ambitious goal to raise $10,000 to help Foodbank Queensland continue the amazing work they do and we are almost there! For every $5 we raise, Foodbank can provide 10 nutritious meals for Australians in need. You can help our team reach our goal and provide 20,000 meals to Queenslanders in need by donating here: https://bit.ly/3gSuFuA

15.01.2022 Last week a team from Barry.Nilsson., Chubb and Clear Insurance joined forces to pack more than 400 hampers for Queenslanders in need at our local Foodbank Australia warehouse. Providing more than 70% of the food rescued for food relief organisations nation-wide, Foodbank is Australia’s largest food relief organisation fighting food insecurity both locally and overseas. BN are proud supporters of Foodbank and were thrilled to be working alongside our clients to help make a difference for families this holiday season. Well done team and thanks for having us, Foodbank! You can find out more about the incredible work they do or donate here: https://www.foodbank.org.au/?state=qld

11.01.2022 Last Sunday, a team from BN’s Brisbane office joined the annual Walk For Awareness, an 8km walk to recognise the 8 Australians who lose their lives to suicide each day. Hosted by the Mental Awareness Foundation, the Walk for Awareness aims to bring the community together to support each other, break the silence around mental illness and contribute to funding of vital mental health programs across the country. Mental health is a significant focus here at BN, and while most of us completed the walk virtually, we were proud to dust off the runners and partake in such a worthy cause! To donate or learn more about Walk for Awareness, visit their website here: https://bit.ly/3iYtNFP
