14.01.2022 GRASS ALLERGY AT A GLANCE: * Dogs are allergic not to grass, but to grass pollens. * Extreme itchiness is the main symptom of grass allergies, though you may also see sneezing and irritated eyes. * To relieve your dogs grass allergies, keep your lawn mowed, limit time outdoors, and wipe down your dog.... * Ask your vet to recommend other treatments that may help GRASS ALLERGY CAUSES: It is a common misconception that dogs are allergic to the green grass they step on. In reality, dogs are allergic not to grass, but to grass pollens, and it is through the inhalation of those pollens that a dog can have an allergic reaction. Since grasses release pollen into the air seasonally -- usually in late spring and early summer -- dogs who are allergic to grass may only show symptoms during those times. Grass pollens are fine and powdery and can travel miles in the wind, so you may end up with pollens in your yard even if you dont have any grass. (info provided by petcare rx)

11.01.2022 What a crazy world we live in at the moment! Lots of changes going on with how we can do things that will keep us safe. So with this in mind. I was wanting too see if those of u that have some issues with your dogs would be up to a Q&A live stream???... If u have questions prior then send them through if u cant jump on line. If there is enough interest, we can set a date and time to live stream. So Sally says lets keep up to date on training
10.01.2022 Now that lockdown restrictions have eased, many of us are going to get back to work and school. It is only natural that our pets might begin to feel anxious whe...n we leave. They have enjoyed the extra time and attention with their family but now may not be able to cope with being at home alone. This may lead to separation anxiety. Separation anxiety signs include: Exaggerated overexcitement when greeting the owner Consistently following the owner Inappropriate toileting Gastrointestinal upsets Stereotypical pacing, restlessness and inability to settle Vocalising (separation barking can be consistent) Chewing, digging and destruction Escaping Separation anxiety can have a significant influence on your pets health and quality of life. Subsequently, it may also impact your life and peace with your neighbours. Escape attempts by dogs with separation anxiety are often extreme and can result in self-injury and household destruction, especially around exit points like windows and doors. It has been found if the animal can be distracted when you first leave home for approximately 20 minutes this can significantly reduce the anxiety, plus: Provide environmental enrichment food puzzle toys and chew toys. Desensitisation and counterconditioning Avoid or desensitise the pet to triggers that the animal associates with you leaving eg keys, work shoes etc. For example, show your pet that picking up keys or putting on work shoes may not always mean you are leaving. Pick up your keys, and then sit down at the kitchen table for a while. This will reduce your dogs anxiety because these cues wont always lead to your departure, and so your dog wont get so anxious when he sees them. - Practice warm goodbyes and cool hellos. For example, on arrival, avoid acknowledging the overzealous frantic animal, as you could be escalating the anxiety. Provide chewing items - chewing releases feel good endorphins Leave classical music or audiobooks playing for them, rather than the radio. If able, leave your pet access to places it feels comfortable in the house with items that have your scent or use Adaptil collars or diffusers. In some cases, you may need more help from your vet with medical options.
10.01.2022 *****SEIZURES***** Seizures, or fits, can occur for many reasons in pets and can be very distressing for owners to witness. They occur due to uncontrolled elect...rical activity in the brain and will lead to the animal losing consciousness, often becoming rigid and shaking violently. WHAT CAUSES SEIZURES IN CATS AND DOGS? Toxic substances, head trauma, epilepsy, metabolic disturbances, parasitic diseases and cancerous processes can all cause seizures. WHAT CAN BE DONE? A thorough physical exam and history of your pet can help your vet decide which of these causes may be affecting your pet. Often, blood and urine tests and sometimes imaging of the brain may be recommended. IDIOPATHIC EPILEPSY is a condition seen in younger animals, especially dogs, where there are repeated seizures for no detectable reason. For pets with epilepsy, medication is recommended to prevent future seizures. If untreated, seizures will become more frequent and severe. Regular check-ups and blood tests are encouraged to monitor the pet’s treatment. It’s vital to never suddenly stop anti-seizure medications. Doing so can cause sudden and severe seizures. Any pet that has experienced a seizure should be presented to the vet immediately.
