23.01.2022 Everything old is new again as polio campaign rolls on Our new Rotary year has arrived and, with it, the challenge of maintaining momentum for the polio eradica...tion campaign. At the time of writing in early June, we had just received the news of two further wild polio virus cases in Pakistan, taking the total for the year to 24 cases 17 in Pakistan and seven in Afghanistan. As Rotarians dedicated to the cause, we must not despair. These setbacks are merely steppingstones along the path to ultimate success and a polio free world. In fact, the discovery of new cases is testimony to the excellence of our campaign. It is well documented that surveillance and testing within the various campaign outposts along with other resources and research are vastly improved and make for a more effective campaign. Cases unearthed by our improved surveillance now might well have been missed in past years and then come back to haunt the campaign years from now. So, our focus turns to the new year and RI president Mark Maloney’s inspirational theme Rotary Connects the World exactly what the End Polio Now campaign is achieving. Nations of the world led by governments of all colours and cultures come together to confront a common foe. Eventual victory will save thousands of lives and billions of dollars. At this time, it is appropriate to pay tribute to our senior leaders from 2018-19 district governors, The Rotary Foundation (TRF) chairs and various committee chairs who have led the End Polio Now campaign for the past 12 months. Final fundraising figures and other statistics are not yet available, but we are very grateful for the continuing support of districts and Rotary clubs. We have shared many great stories of tenacity and generosity in recent months. Many leaders found amazing ways and means to glean every dollar from Rotary causes and the general public. I am pleased to share some wonderful examples of the ingenuity of Rotarians and Rotary clubs from 2018-19 governor Bronwyn Stephens and her District 9800 team, led by TRF chair Dennis Shore and grants chair Mark Stephens: Some 550 wholesale jars of Smarties were donated by Rotarian Quin Scalzo and decorated with special labels designed by Rotarian Grant Gittus for the Smarties for Polio campaign. To date, 500 jars have been distributed. Rotarians and friends enjoy the Smarties for a $2 donation. Each jar attracts around $200, which grows to $1500 when various increases from TRF, DDF and the Gates Foundation are applied. Rotarian Susie Cole led an innovative fundraiser by prancing in the park for polio. More than 20 people pranced around the park raising awareness and funds for polio. During her term, then governor Bronwyn visited India and shot a video during one of the National Immunisation Days. The video was very well received at District Conference inspiring further polio awareness and donations. Movie nights (Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocket Man) proved very successful at Yarraville, Williamstown and Bendigo. TRF trustee and RI past director Jennifer Jones was special guest at a glittering event for End Polio Now. Pinkies were painted at school visits and the Melbourne Town Hall was lit up in red to highlight the Polio campaign. A further $1557 was raised from a special high tea and, when the district’s magic formula was applied, there was a magnificent $11,677.50! All in all, the outstanding year in District 9800 will raise more than $50,000 for polio. There are many similar stories throughout Australia and New Zealand as districts and clubs introduced their own unique fundraising events. Governor John Glassford and his TRF chair PDG David Kennedy led an inspired team in District 9700 and will push almost $30,000 to polio, including $8000 from the popular Ride to Conference by enthusiastic cyclists from various clubs. Governor Anthony Ohlsen found an additional $60,000 from District Designated Funds (DDF) that pushed his District 9780 total to $100,000. The good story is that most districts run very exact DDF campaigns and spend almost every cent on vital humanitarian campaigns. It was wonderful to see smaller amounts donated at year’s end to ensure there was very little left in the DDF tin. Governor Ingrid Waugh from District 9920 in New Zealand advised she had $5000 to add to donations following a special fundraiser for polio at her District Conference. Governor Malcolm Kerr and his team in District 9790 found $15,000 to bolster polio giving. Governor Wendy Protheroe and her magnificent team in District 9600 had to cope with the outbreak of vaccine derived polio in PNG and the additional cost incurred, but still tipped in $10,000 from their intensive grants program. Governor Russell Gurney in District 9810 provided another star performance when his district team diverted a further $10,000 to polio to match their early commitment of $10,000. Of course, we must not forget the amazing Train Ride for Polio, organised by president Mark Anderson and his Rotary Club of Beecroft in Sydney, NSW. Guess what? It’s on again next year and will spread to other capital cities in New Zealand and Australia. Space prevents mention of a myriad of other imaginative and lucrative fundraisers and awareness projects, but heartfelt thanks go to everyone for a year of dedicated service. See more
