22.01.2022 New blog post: Balancing investment risk and returns, and why remaining invested is so important. Click below to read.

17.01.2022 The OECD estimates that Australians lost an average of 21.60% through the GFC during 2008 and 2009. This prompted many investors to switch investments to cash at the worst possible time. Fast forward 11 years, and we are now facing the impact of COVID-19. The GFC and COVID-19 shows us that risk matters.

16.01.2022 An insight into market drawdown and recovery: It may already be a distant memory to some, but March 2020 was one of the most volatile financial markets in history. It’s important to remember a ‘bear market’ is not just how far a particular market falls, but it's also how long that market takes to recover. ... This diagram from J.P Morgan Asset Management highlights the speed at which U.S. equity prices and valuations (reflected by the orange line) have recovered. As you can see, this period has been very unique compared to prior bear markets that took considerably longer to recover. #barwonfinancialplanning

14.01.2022 Given the current financial climate, why is remaining invested so important? As we become accustomed to our 'new normal', it's a good time to consider investment risk and return. There is a clear link between increased risk and expected future market returns. Unfortunately, when risk is overlooked, the end consumer is left to pick up the pieces when a significant market downturn strikes.

09.01.2022 How can we manage financial risk? At Barwon Financial Planning, we progressively sell more expensive assets and buy into assets as they get cheaper. We stay diversified when uncertainty is high, and concentrate positions when things get really attractive. Irrespective of which path markets take over the long term, following this discipline will control the risk in your portfolio and maximise return within those risk limits. #barwonfinancialplanning

05.01.2022 Why does risk matter? Investors feel the pain of investment loss far more than the joy of investment gains- no surprise there! The power of compounding interest matters. For example, a 50% loss requires a 100% gain to get a portfolio back to where it started. If risk has not been appropriately accounted for within a portfolio, there is a higher probability of loss and the propensity for investor behaviour to change. This can result in investors liquidating assets at the wrong time as well as losing the ability to take advantage of compounding returns.
