25.01.2022 Access will be restricted throughout some of tomorrow Tues 17th November along Surf Beach Rd at Ocean Grove Main Beach. Works are being undertaken on some of the cypress trees that grow over the roadway. Arborist’s studies have discovered that some of the older trees are unhealthy and need to be removed for safety reasons. It is intended that the timber will be salvaged for picnic table furniture to be used on the coastal reserve in future. Local native tree species will be planted in place of any trees removed. Please contact our office on [email protected] with any questions or concerns.

Fresh sea breezes, encounters with nature, brisk swims and surfs , whale spotting (if u r lucky ) is all still allowed. 24.01.2022 Feral cats prey on small to medium sized mammals, birds and reptiles leading to species decline or disapearance. We aim to reduce the impact of feral cats through a cat trapping program. We have placed 2 cage traps in sand dunes near Collendina and the Stephens Pde area of 13th Beach. A stringent trapping protocol is in place including checking the traps morning and night. All trapped cats are taken to Geelong Animal Welfare Society We have also observed domestic cats preying on native species in the past. So, please DO keep domestic cats indoors between sunset and sunrise as per City of Greater Geelong local laws. This gives our local native species a chance to flourish in their coastal home

22.01.2022 We hope this pic doesnt make you blush! But spring has sprung and we thought this is a great reminder to please watch out for Hooded Plovers on the beach. Remember to: keep your dogs on a leash when hoodies are near; keep your distance; smile when you see them as its all a bit Bachelor in Paradise at the moment!

20.01.2022 Pest Animal Control Program Alert We take action to control pest animals in the coastal reserve to protect natural and cultural values. FOXES prey on a number of small to medium sized mammals, birds and reptiles. Remote cameras we have placed in the sand dunes continually capture images of foxes. From 14 July we will be restarting our fox control program (it was on pause due to COVID-19). We will be placing multiple poison baits in fenced off remote sections of sand du...ne in the Barwon Bluff and 13TH Beach area. The baits are placed in areas of sand dunes where access is prohibited, buried away from any beach access points and car parks. We have placed signage alerting to the presence of baits at beach access points and car parks last week. The baiting will be in place until 30 November. RABBITS are another pest species that compete with native animals for food and habitat, damage vegetation and expose soil to erosion. Large number of rabbits have been observed in the Barwon Heads Caravan Park over recent months. A poison baiting program is scheduled for this area in the coming weeks. Bait will be placed within bait enclosures throughout the caravan park in enclosures with a perimeter fence (red hazard tape). Clear signage throughout the park states that you must stay away from these enclosures, ensuring children and dogs are kept away also. Please ensure you only walk your dog on the main road transit through the park and on leash. More info: https://www.geelongaustralia.com.au///8d577b2dc0507d8.aspx

20.01.2022 2 Hooded Plover chicks have hatched at the end of the Ocean Grove Spit. This is great news for this threatened species! A Temporary Exclusion Zone is in place from 19W- 20W. As you can see they're hard for you to spot when on the beach. But your dog can! ... Please use the internal pathway rather than walk on this section of beach. This gives these precious chicks the chance to feed and grow without disturbance.

20.01.2022 The easing of government restrictions this week will mean some changes on the Barwon Coast. Consistent with all tourism operations in Victoria, as of June 1 the Riverview Family Caravan Park and Barwon Heads Caravan Park will be welcoming guests back for self-contained accommodation only such as cabins and beach houses. And KIDS REJOICE as playgrounds will be open from midnight tonight (we assume you wont be there until tommorrow morning ). Physical distancing and mass gathering rules apply at all times. For other changes see the DHHS website link in the full post. Please be patient as we update our signage to match the new restriction levels.

19.01.2022 We are seeking community feedback on design options for an upgrade of riverbank at Ocean Grove. The aging protective wall along the eastern riverbank near the Riverview Family Caravan Park and Barwon Estuary Walk is deteriorating. In preparation for potential upgrade works, Barwon Coast & DELWP BarwonSouthWest are seeking the communitys preferences around an upgrade of this site. Engineers have developed design options for a potential protective barrier along the riverbank ...to prevent coastal erosion. We are looking for feedback on the design options for the revetment, a raised pathway, and potential access points to the beach. Share your thoughts at www.engage.vic.gov.au/barwonriverrevetment Submissions close on Thursday 14 May 2020 and feedback will be integrated into the decision-making process.

15.01.2022 We hope you have had the pleasure of seeing the beautiful shrubby trees covered with white flowers whilst out on the coast this Spring. These are Coast Tea-trees Leptospermum laevigatum. They are a long lived local native plant along our coastline. The common name of Tea-tree is said to come from early settlers who soaked the leaves in boiling water to make a tea substitute. Aboriginal people used the aromatic leaves for medicine, and today the oils are used by many as an antiseptic or therapeutic oil. Coast Tea-trees form part of our threatened Coastal Moonah Woodland community.

15.01.2022 This Easter weekend it is more important than ever to #StayAtHome

14.01.2022 One of the VERY cool things our staff get to do is capture images from remote cameras securely placed in the sand dunes along the Barwon Coast. We do this to better understand fauna diversity. This week a wallaby got very up close and curious in the 13th Beach dunes

14.01.2022 There has been a large increase in dog poo not disposed of correctly on Barwon Coast beaches of late. Were really hoping the increased exposure of this issue by The Project and other media will create some behaviour change. #scoopthepoop

13.01.2022 BE A #SNAKEHERO! July 16 is World Snake Day! The biggest threat to snakes is our attitudes. See link for some cool facts, such as - rattlesnakes take care of their kids & sometimes their friends kids too! https://bit.ly/BCsnakes Did you know that the most common snake found on the Barwon Coast coastal reserve is the Lowland Copperhead? They usually rise and shine around August so dont be a Legless Lizard, stand up and be a voice for our snakes!

13.01.2022 Triplets THREE tiny Hooded Plover chicks have hatched on 13th Beach and we need your help! They are a threatened species. Please avoid the area between 31W & 32W where an 'Exclusion Zone' has been set up. This allows the chicks to feed and grow without disturbance and Mum and Dad Hoodie to do their important parenting work without the stress that comes from having humans and dogs nearby. Pls observe all exclusion fences and signage and cross your fingers for these little ones

11.01.2022 Did you know? Dog regulations on the Barwon Coast have not changed. The existing regulations will stay the same for at least the next few months. Information on where you can take your dog on the beach in Ocean Grove & Barwon Heads can be found at https://bit.ly/dogregs It is important to note that the longstanding prohibition on dogs and horses at the west end of 13th Beach between beach access 40W to 42W Blue Rocks remains in place. We are currently working with City of Gr...eater Geelong toward an agreed position on any changes to dog control regulations. We thank the community who provided their feedback on proposed new regulations late last year. Patrick Perkins on Unsplash

09.01.2022 Thanks to the Victorian Government Coastal Public Access and Risk Grants program, we have received $50, 000 to renew the Hodgson Street Beach access in Ocean Grove. ... Coastal processes have lowered the beach in the area near Hodgson Street and eroded the dune toe which undermined the existing stairway. We will replace the stairway with a pedestrian ramp access to the beach. The new structure will have timber piles embedded deeply into the beach to respond to the ongoing threat of coastal storm surges. These works will commence in 2021. DELWP BarwonSouthWest

07.01.2022 Heres a bit of nature nostalgia . We found this pic of a Leopard Seal who visited our coast in 1948 (& we believe a 1940s version of photoshop was not involved!). Argus Newspaper Collection of Photographs State Library Victoria These amazing seals still visit our shores today. The old saying of never smile at a crocodile also applies to Leopard Seals. They are a true carnivore that are not always happy to see you!

06.01.2022 In April & May, partnering with DELWP BarwonSouthWest ,we held an online community consultation program on design options for a potential revetment along the Barwon River at Ocean Grove. 04.01.2022 Our project in partnership with DELWP BarwonSouthWest to better protect the coast from erosion at Ocean Grove Main Beach is continuing well. A new set of beach access stairs are now complete and will improve access once construction has finished. The extended rock revetment wall is on track to be completed early next week and then construction will start on the pavement for the new ramp. We ask everyone to continue to observe safety signs in this area and not to walk in the vicinity of the construction area.

02.01.2022 We are excited .............we have spotted Hooded Plover eggs on the beach between 19W - 20W and 30W - 31W. Next time you visit, you will notice we have placed signage and roped off the areas near the eggs to give these threatened birds much needed space. Being to close to the roped off area can disturb the parents from looking after their precious eggs, therefore we ask that everyone walks as close to the water as possible and ensure dogs are on leads. Thank you for helping us to help these precious birds. Fingers crossed we will have some great news soon.
