20.01.2022 Our Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Visitors Area has been fortunate enough to have a recent refurbishment thanks to a grant from the Barwon Health Foundation. The ICU visitors space is a very important area for our patient's loved ones and we wanted to give it a less clinical and more inviting atmosphere. An Aboriginal art piece by a local Aboriginal artist Ammie Howell was commissioned and we are thrilled to receive this piece, titled Colours of Country during NAIDOC week.... The team in ICU also ran a staff photo competition and these photos were generously printed by Print Design Australia with Dulux Australia donating paint for a freshen up. #NAIDOCWeek #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe

19.01.2022 It’s #OTweek so please join us in celebrating the many ways occupational therapists make a difference in healthcare! OTs work with individuals, groups and communities to achieve optimal health and wellbeing through participation in everyday life, the things that make us who we are, the things that create a meaningful life and engage with wider society and culture. Here are some of the ways that OTs work across Barwon Health: - Bed-based inpatient services - OTs work collabora...tively with clients to help them partake in meaningful activities of daily living, and participate in discharge planning to ensure a safe discharge for all clients. - Community services OTs support clients living in the community with complex issues to achieve their goals to maximise their independence. This may be due to a traumatic injury, a chronic condition, or complex medical issues. - Hand therapy OTs in hand therapy work with clients who have injuries or conditions to their upper limbs, to promote healing and increase functional use of their hands. - Mental health OTs assess function, cognition, and sensory preferences, providing strategies for anxiety management, participation in meaningful activities, development of emotional skills, crisis and safety planning, and re-engagement with the community. - Paediatrics- The new service at Barwon Health North includes supporting children from birth right up to primary school attendance with complex developmental delays and behaviour concerns. 12.01.2022 Our People of the Pandemic: Laura Baker Brooks - COVID-19 Associate Nurse Unit Manager, Barwon Health North Laura was redeployed from the Central Resource Unit at the beginning of the pandemic to be part of the COVID-19 response at Barwon Health North (BHN). Laura has led and been involved in many process changes enabling the team to provide an exceptional service at BHN. She has demonstrated all the Barwon Health values, even with challenging days testing over 850 people in ...terrible weather conditions. Laura was recently appointed as the COVID-19 Associate Nurse Unit Manager at Barwon Health North and she is grateful for the leadership opportunity so early in her nursing career. As a nurse, you’re always learning and growing, but I’ve never had to be so adaptable in my entire career as I have been at the COVID-19 clinic. Procedures are always changing to meet new guidelines and it certainly keeps you on your toes! Working outside in the COVID-19 drive through testing facility throughout winter has definitely had its challenges. On our biggest day we tested over 850 people, which also happened to be our worst weather day. Working in the rain, hail and wind was definitely a little different from the hospital ward work I am used to. Beyond the challenges, working with an incredibly talented and quick thinking team at Barwon Health North has made it easy to maintain resilience. I genuinely enjoy coming to work every day and it’s easy to stay motivated when you look forward to seeing what each day has in store for you. #peopleofthepandemic #covid19

12.01.2022 Our People of the Pandemic: Hand Therapy team. In the midst of #OccupationalTherapyWeek and #TelehealthAwarenessMonth, the Hand Therapy team have shown how they continue to work with clients who have injuries or conditions to their upper limbs, despite the challenges of the pandemic. When many face-to-face services were cancelled back at the start of the pandemic, within 24 hours the Hand Therapy team moved their service to nearly 75 per cent telehealth. From day one, they ...have remained committed to ensuring their service still continued to provide clinically-driven high quality care. They were innovative in various ways, engaging other disciplines from their regular clinics to assist with their day-to-day appointments and even setting up telehealth for busy clinics. This involved setting up videoconferencing in outpatient clinic rooms where patients could talk to the therapist working from home, then hand therapists or allied health assistants in the clinics would make splints. The team demonstrated compassion for their patients by advocating for those that required face-to-face appointments rather than telehealth. By maintaining and adapting their service, they exceeded expectations for outpatient service delivery where it might be considered reasonable for the service to be reduced or suspended. #peopleofthepandemic #covid19

11.01.2022 #TheHeartofBarwonHealth Olivia Darby, Andrew Love Cancer Centre clinical nurse consultant I’ve been at Barwon Health for five years in this role. I was working in Darwin before, but I’m actually fourth generation at Barwon Health - my aunt, grandfather and great-grandfather were all medical here. I think knowing it was an intrinsic part of our family led me towards nursing. The cancer nurse assessment clinic opened in May last year with the Andrew Love Cancer Centre redeve...lopment and we aim to keep patients at home and out of the Emergency Department with symptom advice, education and support for families and carers, related to anti-cancer treatment. I feel like you make a difference to people’s experience and you can empower patients through education to feel they’re in control of managing what they can control. That’s the goal. We’re also keeping people from unnecessarily waiting for GPs and lessening the stress of a very stressful experience. From immunotherapy chemotherapy, and oral treatments, the side effects are very different and people want to do everything they can to have the best recovery. People come in for a lot of different things so we’re providing the support and care they need. It’s easy to worry whether you’ve done enough, whether you’ve supported people enough, and with COVID we’ve had a lot of challenges around bringing people in and having to adapt to doing a lot of it by phone. Clear communication and follow-up is really important and we know we need to be accessible. It’s such a fantastic team to work in and we all contribute to giving patients positive experiences. 09.01.2022 Did you know thunderstorm asthma can be triggered in people who don't normally suffer from asthma? If you suffer from hay fever, you may also be susceptible. Thunderstorm asthma is thought to be triggered by a unique combination of high amounts of grass pollen in the air (October - December) and a certain type of thunderstorm. For people who have asthma or hay fever this can trigger severe asthma symptoms. To help you prepare for a potential thunderstorm asthma event, you can... receive thunderstorm asthma forecast alerts by downloading the Vic Emergency app to your mobile device, create your watch zone and enable alerts. You can also check the epidemic thunderstorm asthma forecast here: https://bit.ly/2SjRj5j On days when thunderstorm asthma conditions are forecast, avoid being outside during a thunderstorm and in particular during the wind gusts that come before the storm. Go inside and close your doors and windows, and if you have your air conditioner on, turn it to recirculate. 07.01.2022 Our People of the Pandemic: Camille Feery, COVID-19 coordination team Camille joined the COVID-19 team as a support to the COVID-19 coordinator. She joined without knowing what the role actually was but learnt that you just have to run with whatever is happening and change direction quickly in the midst of a pandemic. Camille has taken on any challenge thrown at her. The testing sites, in reach, hotel monitoring, Staff Care and contact tracing teams have all benefited from... Camille’s leadership, often seven days a week during the peak. Teams have looked up to her, asked for advice and developed good working relationships with Camille throughout the pandemic. As a back-up for the COVID-19 coordinator, Camille has been an incredible support and hasn’t hesitated to jump in and test poultry processing plant employees at 3pm on a Friday! Camille said it has been really motivating working on the COVID-19 response, despite the relentless nature of the pandemic. It has been inspiring knowing that the work we are doing is having an impact that is measureable and has a direct impact on the way we live our lives in our region. I have enjoyed meeting lots of new people that I haven’t worked with before. The team working on the COVID-19 response are nothing short of amazing - no task has ever been too big. We have all worked really hard to keep COVID under control in our region. #peopleofthepandemic #COVID19

02.01.2022 #TheHeartofBarwonHealth Geraldine McMeel, Hospital Admission Risk Program (HARP) acting co-ordinator - "I have been with Barwon Health for 14 years, sharing my time at HARP and the Surf Coast Primary Care teams. This year, I've been back at HARP as co-ordinator, while maintaining some connection with my role at Surf Coast. I'm so grateful for the compassion, innovation and commitment shown by these teams. My HARP colleagues are a dynamic and highly-skilled bunch who focus on ...advocacy and support for clients navigating their health and wellbeing needs. Even through some tough times during COVID-19 restrictions, HARP has managed to keep the service running and remain focused on offering client-centred care, even while mostly working remotely. Staff working in the Surf Coast Primary Care and Administration teams have also really demonstrated their commitment to quality care this year, particularly with the local and neighbouring communities of Torquay and Anglesea. They've been providing their usual service while also supporting the COVID monitoring team. I've had a chance to join them and it's been great to see the team's ability to rise to the challenge and roll with the changes. Their commitment has been brilliant and the collaboration with the contact tracing team has been a huge part of Barwon Health's response to the pandemic." See more
