25.01.2022 Yesterday was World Heart Day! When we think of hardening of blood vessels, we think of the older population. But when do the changes start? BIS has investigated blood vessel health from infancy to preschoolers and now into later childhood.... BIS collects information through blood samples, retinal images, ultrasounds and blood pressure just to mention a few. Led by Dr. David Burgner, we hope to understand how inflammation and infection in childhood impacts cardiovascular health. The hope is to generate new knowledge to prevent cardiovascular disease in adulthood, all of which we could not do without our amazing BIS families!

24.01.2022 Did anyone see our very own Tooth Fairy in the Geelong Advertiser on Saturday? Baby teeth are important to the BIS team, telling a story about the environmental exposures during pregnancy and early childhood through differences that can be seen in the layers of the tooth. The BIS Tooth Fairy is preparing her tooth collection packs and will be sending these out over the next few years as part of the BIS Primary School review. While you wait, remember to keep your teeth sparkling!

24.01.2022 On Friday, the BIS team attended a talk from our Canadian friends, the CHILD study. The CHILD Study is very similar to BIS, looking at how gut bacteria influences child health, in particular asthma and allergy. They made an excellent video about our growing understanding of what makes up a healthy baby’s gut microbiome. Check it out below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eL9dAGiCNLU

With so many good things coming from your time and effort with BIS, we are going to start a video series sharing the BIS work to date. But first, what areas of BIS would you like to learn more about? Leave your suggestion below. First video coming very soon

22.01.2022 It was 9 years ago when Kim joined BIS. During her pregnancy with Poppie she developed common pregnancy condition, pre-eclampsia. This meant Poppie had to be delivered 8 weeks early. We are pleased to share that we have recently published work linking maternal diet as a potential prevention strategy for pre-eclampsia. BIS worked with a team of researchers to further understand how maternal diet and the gut microbiome (gut "bugs") influence pre-eclampsia and infant outcomes. E...xplained further in the below articles: https://sydney.edu.au//preeclampsia-risk-may-be-reduced-by https://www.geelongadvertiser.com.au//2d32fd700a8d0f9399b5 Image courtesy of Geelong Advertiser

20.01.2022 GOOD NEWS ALERT! We understand how important positivity is at the moment and we are SO pleased to share good news from BIS. Thanks to collaborative efforts from you (our BIS families) and our talented research team, BIS has been able to link a specific bacteria in a mother’s gut to decreased risk of their baby developing food allergy.... This means we can now work towards a safe and effective way of preventing the baby developing an allergic disease. Read more: https://www.newscientist.com//2238421-the-bacteria-in-a-/

10.01.2022 Hi BIS Families, Ever since the beginning BIS has been collecting samples of poo from yourself and your child. These precious samples are stored in super cold (-80 C) freezers in the BIS labs. If you’re wondering why poo is so interesting to the researchers at BIS, check out the video below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzPD009qTN4

10.01.2022 Hi BIS families, Unfortunately there was an issue during an IT upgrade at Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI) over the weekend. We understand that a number of emails were incorrectly sent out. IT has assured us that steps have been taken to rectify the issue and to prevent any future recurrence. BIS would like to apologise to our families who have received multiple emails because of this IT issue. Please disregard the emails you may have received over the weekend.... BIS understands this term has been extremely busy for families, juggling home schooling, work commitments and everything COVID-19. If you would like to discuss this issue further with a team member of BIS please don’t hesitate to contact us directly, via [email protected] or 0400 432 976. Best wishes, The BIS team.

10.01.2022 Did you know living on a farm, exposure to animals and lots of siblings reduces risk of asthma? Although asthma isn’t typically diagnosed until primary school, there is a lot of lung development that has already occurred since pregnancy and early childhood. The missing piece of information is what makes children’s lungs healthy in early life. This is important because lung function in childhood sets the trajectory for life. You may remember BIS measuring lung function when y...our child was a baby and trying to get them to fall asleep (very hard!). Now we hope to find out which BIS kids are asthmatic, so we can use all the information we have collected from you to understand healthy lung development in early childhood. The Primary School review is funded to find this out! Below is Clancy doing a great job at his BIS Primary School visit last year. #AsthmaWeek

05.01.2022 We have an exciting new team member here at BIS, the Tooth Fairy! Here at BIS we would love to collect one of your child's baby teeth. Baby teeth, like trees, have rings that can provide us with lots of information about exposure from in mums tummy, infancy and early childhood!

04.01.2022 Hi BIS families, this week we are sending out our data linkage information to you all. In preparation here is another video about data linkage. This video is from the Northern Territory-South Australian Data Linkage service. It explains the benefits of using data linkage in research and policy, and the process that is used within government agencies to protect the privacy of individuals.

03.01.2022 Got a curious kid? We are excited to be adding a new area of research- BIS Dental. Mihiri is the BIS paediatric dentist and she wrote a wonderful article for kids about why we lose our baby teeth.... Have a read with your curious BIS kid- link below. https://theconversation.com/curious-kids-why-do-we-lose-our

01.01.2022 Hi Everyone! Our very own BIS Investigator, Dr Dave Burgner, discusses the importance of careful antibiotic use and how antibiotics are thought to effect the microbiome in early life. https://theconversation.com/antibiotics-before-birth-and-in

01.01.2022 Did you know that Osteoporosis affects 2 in 3 Australians over 50? This week is Healthy Bones Week and with the help of Deakin Researcher, Natalie Hyde, BIS has secured funding to look at the development of bone health in children! Bone health is usually measured with an x-ray, which can expose individuals to low levels of radiation. However, with our new funding we can measure bone health in BIS kids’ through a safe ultrasound of the heel without any radiation. The best part is that the kids love the ultrasound, telling us it feels like a warm foot cuddle with water balloons. This measure, which takes less than 5 mins, aims to further understand how to build strong bones for life.
