23.01.2022 Only last week was I able to drive on the Bridle Track Road from Railton Road to Sheffield en route to Cradle Valley from Hobart. It had been closed due to extreme flood damage from the heavy rains in the north of the state earlier this month, and now that the road is open I could see why it was closed. The road runs parallel to the Mersey River, and it had overflowed its banks, gouged great chunks out of the road, and generally making a terrific mess which is just now being cleaned up.

22.01.2022 Tasman NP, Shipstern Bluff, on a calm day last week (between rain squalls). From the track to Cape Raoul.

21.01.2022 Did you know we donate $0.10 per litre of our fuel purchases to @Greening Australia in support of their Biodiverse Carbon Restoration Projects in Tasmania to mitigate the effects of carbon emissions arising from our transport services? 20.01.2022 These two were at it for about 1 hour before I decided to photograph them and they hadn't slackened off over that time. The smaller one didn't yield either - he gave as good as he got. I'm not sure who gave up in the end - I couldn't wait that long.

17.01.2022 Also known colloquially as the "Vomit Bird" because of its unique call!

13.01.2022 Unseasonal heavy (15 cm) snowfall - thankfully just after a large school group had left BCT

10.01.2022 I've just added a photo album - Mt McCall Track. You might find it interesting.

08.01.2022 This is the first bus we bought when establishing TWE, and although it's getting a bit long in the tooth we find we are still using it (both as a back-up vehicle, and for the odd bus run) so we decided to dress it up to match our other vehicles. The photo is of the iconic Mt Oakleigh on the Overland Track as viewed from the Pelion Hut. It now joins Rolly (Mt Roland), Annie (Mt Anne) and Franklin (Franklin River) and we hope it continues to have a long and productive life.

08.01.2022 It took me 2.5 hours with the chainsaw to clear the fallen, snow-laden trees that blocked the driveway.

07.01.2022 I've just stumbled across these photos of some my Bennetts Wallabies sheltering in the last snowfall here and thought you might be interested.

06.01.2022 Some photos on a recent daywalk in misty conditions

05.01.2022 Anthony P joined us in early April for a succession of daywalks to a variety of destinations. This album chronicles his adventures. We tried to vary the destinations from coastal to alpine, and also to vary the nature of the terrain to make it interesting. This was the not first time we'd prepared such an itinerary, however it was Anthony's first time in such an environment and we're pretty sure he had a ball.

04.01.2022 As a conservation landholder I was fortunate to attend the recent Landcare Conference in the Huon Valley. One of the activities was a voyage down the Huon River in a Rob Pennicott craft and we came across Huon Aquaculture's salmon pens on the way. These hold from 100,000 juvenile salmon to 50,000 - 60,000 mature fish and are a powerful lure to the resident seal population which are always lurking around hoping to breach the pens and get a free feed.

03.01.2022 Our guests' water is sourced from a semi-permanent spring that runs down a gully above the cabins. The small tank in the foreground is a settling tank for the two lower down - its function is to allow any silt to settle out of solution so the water is clear. The water from the spring is collected in a trap above the small tank and I regularly check this trap to ensure that it's clear of debris, etc., however today's inspection proved difficult, and I think I've a bit of chain sawing to complete before I can find the trap (underneath the fallen branches!). Not quite sure why I'm sharing this with you all, but thought it might be of interest as an example of the unusual problems we sometimes have to deal with down here.
