08.01.2022 Level Up Your Push Up! Push ups are a great exercise that check off a number of athletic qualities including upper body pushing strength, shoulder stability as well as core and trunk control. Best of all they don’t need any equipment! One of the common things we see that can limit performance especially for youth and adolescent athletes is setting up so that in the bottom position of the movement, the elbows are flaring out at 90 degrees and are far away from the body. Fo...r some this can limit their endurance in performing multiple reps and sets or potentially even cause pain or discomfort What we recommend to level up your push up is that instead of quickly placing your hands on the floor and starting your set, take a couple of seconds to reposition your hands so that when you’re lowering your body to the floor, your elbows are a bit closer to your body, around 45 degrees This will be a more comfortable position for your shoulder, as well as give you an increase in leverage to perform the movement with full range Give it a try and share with a friend that has been working on their push ups from home! #basepp #baseathome #basemovementschool #movementliteracy #adolescentathletedevelopment #strengthandconditioning

Everyone has heard of a squat but do you realise how often you use this movement everyday? Sitting into a chair, standing from a chair, getting things from the ground, even stepping up a step or gutter all use ‘squatting’ as their base movement. On the sporting field, directions change, jumping, decelerating, bracing and tackling all use a ‘squat’ in their movement pattern. You’ll notice with the video Jazz uses the hip hinging skills you’ve already learnt to get her hips back and get the most out of the movement. Do I need to keep my knees behind my toes? NOPE. Letting your knees travel forward over your toes helps keep your weight over your feet for maximum balance and strength Does my back have to stay upright? NOPE.
