19.01.2022 Phoenix and Breakers escape to Tasmania to avoid outbreak Tasmania will get an early feel for the NBL with two teams heading south to avoid the latest Victorian COVID-19 outbreak. SEE THE PHOTOS >> THE latest Victorian COVID-19 will see two NBL teams relocate to Tasmania to set up training camp ahead of the new season.... The South East Melbourne Phoenix and the New Zealand Breakers will arrive in Hobart on Friday morning to continue their preparations ahead of the season start on January 10. NBL Commissioner Jeremy Loeliger said: Given the current situation in Melbourne we have decided it’s prudent for both clubs to relocate to Hobart and they will be accommodated and train there under strict COVID protocols. This will give us time to assess and work through the next steps required as we prepare for the forthcoming NBL Season. We hope the current restrictions and resulting border closures will be eased as quickly as possible but we will need to stay flexible in our approach and we will continue to be guided by the advice of the relevant state health authorities. I want to thank all of our clubs, players and staff for their patience and understanding as we navigate this latest challenge. I also want to acknowledge the Tasmanian Government for accommodating teams on short notice and supporting their temporary relocation. A Government spokesman initially labelled the move as merely preliminary discussions but added that any relocation would be in accordance with any current border restrictions pertaining to Tasmania air and sea ports. The NBL is also working on moving the Sydney Kings and the Illawarra Hawks from their current base in Albury given the ongoing situation in NSW, while Melbourne United is already in Cairns for a pre-season trip. An NBL season usually starts in October but was pushed back to January to give the greatest chance of playing in front of crowds. The Tasmanian JackJumpers will enter the NBL in the following season for the 2021-22 competition.

18.01.2022 Tasmania’s return to the NBL will begin on opening night of the 2021-22 season if the DEC upgrade is completed on time An eight-month window to complete the upgrades to the Derwent Entertainment Centre is all that stands in the way of the Tasmania JackJumpers launching the 2021-22 NBL season at home. THE hopes of the NBL’s newest team making a grand entrance and launching the 2021-22 season at home hinge on the Derwent Entertainment Centre redevelopment being completed on t...ime. On his first visit to the state since the announcement Tasmania would return to the league next year, NBL owner and CEO Larry Kestelman declared his vision for the JackJumpers to open their venture in front of home fans. To do so the $41 million DEC upgrade, which is ahead of schedule with stage one completed, must defy extremely tight time frames to be ready by October next year. I would love for the first game of the season to be launched with the new team, that would be amazing, Mr Kestelman said on his first inspection of what will become a state of the art venue on Monday. That would be our number one goal. You have contingency plans and I was just saying to the premier that even if need be, we’ve got a little bit of leeway, we don’t necessarily have to schedule the first home game day one of the season. We could probably give ourselves a week or two of the team being on the road. It was always going to be tight and then the delay of nearly six months with COVID has made it extraordinarily tight. But we as a team are up for it and we’ll make sure that it happens, hell or high water, we will make sure that this venue is up and running for the October start of the season. While the refurbishment of the DEC into the JackJumpers’ nest will be the centrepiece for the team, Mr Kestelman has grand visions for the venue. He hopes to see it operational 100 days a year, and believes it could attract a price tag of between $700,000 to $1 million for naming rights. The plan is for this venue to be quite frankly too busy to be able to have them training here regularly. We intend to turn it into the nest for the JackJumpers, but much more so into a community place that people can gather, and be uplifted and entertained. Premier Peter Gutwein, who has regularly referred to Mr Kestelman as a force of nature, said tenders for stage two of the redevelopment will close December 21. Out of all of the people that I could think of to actually get this job done by October next year, Mr Kestelman is one of the very few I think in the world that would be able to do it, he said.

Thanks to the Tasmanian Government for their ongoing grant support of this statewide initiative.
16.01.2022 Basketball Tasmania welcomes the budget announcement of $1M over four years to continue school basketball clinics. Chris McCoy, Basketball Tasmania CEO stated: Thanks to the State Government for their ongoing support of basketball and we are particularly pleased to see the continuation of funding with Basketball Tasmania to enable the three NBL1 clubs to deliver the school basketball clinics across the state. The school basketball clinics provide excellent exposure for our sport with many young boys and girls then flowing into our mainstream competitions. In addition to this, the activity allows excellent brand building in their catchment areas for the Hobart Chargers, Launceston Tornadoes and North West Thunder and these NBL1 clubs provide an important pathway and aspiration for our junior athletes in this state.
15.01.2022 In their own words // Zoe Crawford Hi, my name is Zoe Crawford and I am a BTAS graduate for the class of 2020. I first joined the BTAS program 7 years ago in the FDP program, later followed by SDP, and High Performance. These programs have helped me achieve many personal goals whilst providing me with the skills and knowledge to undertake the challenging environment of going against the best junior players in the country and putting myself in a position to receive expos...ure at various nationals. Along the journey, I have come across many people that will be my lifelong friends as well as meeting coaches that truly care and invest so much time into not only mine but everyone’s development who comes through the program. While being in the BTAS program I’ve been fortunate enough to represent Tasmania at national championships on multiple occasions and also have had the privilege to represent Australia at an Oceania Championship which has been the main highlight in my basketball journey this far. Over the coming years, I have aspirations of playing in the NBL1, playing at college, and hopefully go pro. With the thanks to Mark and the rest of the network coaches that have invested their time into me, I now have the support required to take that next step. To the younger athletes, make sure to enjoy the experience whilst staying committed and working hard because these programs are the pathway to bigger opportunities both on and off the court that will set you up for life.

14.01.2022 Finals and final tune-ups ahead on court in the Tasmanian Junior Basketball League Northern Conference Its getting down to the business end of the season in the Tasmanian Junior Basketball League Northern Conference. That format change is one that Basketball Tasmania believes has delivered strongly, with competition at a close and a high standard, with the quality set to rise even more next season when the Launceston teams are scheduled to take part.... "It has been great from our perspective and obviously there has bee some adversity with the COVID shutdown and the impact of that with the Launceston teams not coming into the league this year, but credit to the parents and the volunteers, as well as the players and associations, Richmond said. "Our main priority was to try to increase the level of competition in terms of creating a better level of competition for the participants, as a lot of the time in past seasons you would see some of the stronger teams would be blowing the other teams away and large margins. "Our priority was to try to close that gap and we have seen some quite tight games since we split into the divisions, which is some real positive signs heading into next year. "We are expecting a cracking finals series across both divisions as we have been seeing plenty of one and two point margins in both divisions, so we expect the finals series to be no different and there are some pretty exciting age groups and any team could win it on their day." After this weekends matches, semi and preliminary finals will be played on September 13 with venues yet to be locked in. The competitions grand finals are scheduled for Sunday, September 20 in Devonport.

07.01.2022 Samuel Plapp named North-West Inter High age champion in three codes It's been a year Burnie High School student Samuel Plapp won't forget, cleaning up at this year's North-West Inter High sports carnivals. The year 8 student was named age champion in swimming, cross country and athletics - the first time he's achieved the trifecta.... Not just an individual competitor he succeeded, as Plapp continued to develop his game on the basketball court for the Burnie Tigers. At just 14 years old, Plapp said he wasn't sure whether his heart lay in just one sport. "I like them both the same (running and basketball); through the summer it's the athletic season but through the winter, basketball is more prominent," Plapp said. Plapp's name was also etched into the school's history books, breaking Burnie High School's 42-year-old 200m record and setting a new Inter High record in the 800m. "I didn't really get to do too many basketball tournaments or anything, which has been different," he said. "But I just want to continue doing the same thing I'm doing; training, playing in basketball tournaments and doing running events." I like them both the same (running and basketball); through the summer it's the athletic season but through the winter, basketball is more prominent. With his best years yet to come, the all-rounder said he was eager to continue pushing himself against the North-West's best. "We've got a fair bit of competition; I've got a lot of training partners in my team that all do the same North-West basketball and running competitions," he said. "I'm not really sure yet, I want to go far in my sport but I'm not too sure yet - I'm still young and figuring it out."

07.01.2022 On behalf of the Board and Staff of Basketball Tasmania - Merry Christmas to all our basketball families. We hope you all have a nice break over Christmas and we are all looking forward to a prosperous New Year. This year was a tough one for everyone and it presented some major challenges for our great sport. I’m proud of the way our members made the best of the situation and despite losing over 3 months in shutdown we were able to complete around 90% of our basketball acti...vities throughout the state. An example of the Tassie spirit was the support for the Adelaide Invitational event that we offered to our development program athletes and families. We were overwhelmed by the support with around 180 people interested in going on the trip which unfortunately could not proceed. A great friend of mine who has sadly passed away always succinctly put the purpose of basketball organisations Participation Development Pathways We will all be back in the New Year with new energy to progress each of these areas of our sport. 2021 will also be an exciting one with the Jack Jumpers providing the state with our very own NBL team. Merry Christmas to all. Chris McCoy, CEO, Basketball Tasmania
