24.01.2022 A Total Fire Ban has been declared for Thursday 11th February in the Mt Lofty Ranges (and other places). The rating is severe.

24.01.2022 Basket Range 14 is having a busy few days!! Another call out at 5 pm today, to reports of a large fire at Collins Hill Rd, Forest Range. The fire was putting up a lot of smoke, and a heap of flame - all visible from Deviation Rd/ Lobethal Rd / Collins Hill Rd.... A local landowner has taken the opportunity to burn off a big patch of scrub - it looks spectacular, but is all under control!!

24.01.2022 Two Basket Range members - Pip & Josh, responded to the Deepwater and Yumali fires, in the South East, last night as part of the East Torrens Strike team. Crews worked all night mopping up, returning home mid morning. Two other Basket Range members - Neil & Monica, were part of the team that traveled down to Coomandook this morning by bus, to drive the appliances back home.

23.01.2022 A total fire ban has been declared in the Mt Lofty Ranges (and other places) for Thursday 19th November. The rating is Severe All CFS brigades across the state have contingencies in place to manage Covid Restrictions, in the event of a call out. Take care and stay safe.

22.01.2022 Last night, our crews headed to Ashton oval for some joint training with our neighbours from Norton Summit - Ashton CFS Brigade. Crews joined in a bushfire exercise, an unexpected burn over drill, and familiarisation of each other's appliances.

22.01.2022 Training tonight was looking at hydrant boosters - one of two we have in our area. Training involved connecting our appliance to the booster, to pressurise the three hydrants on the system. Then a wander around the complex to determine where the hydrants were, and how effective our appliance was at pressurising the system!... Thanks Marcus for showing us your facility!

20.01.2022 Total Fire Ban declared for Mount Lofty Ranges (and eight other areas) for Monday 11th January 2021. The rating for the Mount Lofty Ranges is severe. Make sure you have a bushfire plan - if you don't, you can do one this afternoon - it take just five minutes - see https://www.cfs.sa.gov.au/prepare-f/5-minute-bushfire-plan/

20.01.2022 A reminder that our Annual General Meeting is on next Monday, 8pm at the Basket Range Hall. Under Covid restrictions, we are allowed 51 people at the meeting in line with social distancing requirements. Members of the community are welcome to attend, along with our members.

20.01.2022 Our large appliance (Basket Range 24) and crew responded to a tree down on Lobethal Rd, around 2pm yesterday afternoon. Crews found a branch blocking one lane. A few quick cuts with the chainsaw, and the road was clear!

19.01.2022 For those that follow our page, you may be aware that have CFS training every Monday night (except public holidays). Topics vary, however, we do have a focus on 'hands on' skills. Back in January, our two appliances headed up to the Ashton oval for some 'running grass fire' training.... This is the situation where crews are faced with a relatively low intensity grass fire - often in paddock or similar, and crews knock down the fire using a running grass fire technique from the crew deck of the moving fire appliance. While open grass paddocks that we can drive through are quite rare in our area, we don't have to go far out of our area to find such paddocks! (We spent some time chasing grass fires in paddocks out the back of Woodside, and Harrogate, during the Cudlee Creek fire). New crews got to learn the techniques, while existing crews got to practice!

19.01.2022 Those of you in Basket Range & surrounds, you may be able to smell smoke. There are no reported going fires anywhere nearby - however, there has been a controlled burn undertaken by National Parks, today in the Para Wirra Park, with the smoke we can smell likely to be from there.

18.01.2022 Another heads up - National Parks are planning on undertaking a prescribed burn on private land between Lobethal Rd and Burdetts Rd / in the valley below Cramond Rd, tomorrow (Thursday). National Parks will be utilising the area around the Basket Range fire station for briefings and filling up with water. Light up time is scheduled to be around 1.00 pm, however this could change, depending on the weather conditions.... National Parks crews will be in attendance at all times

18.01.2022 Some nice weather predicted for tomorrow (Sunday), and with the drier conditions, you may be tempted to undertake some burning off. Now is a great time to get your property cleaned up for the bushfire season...however, Monday is predicted to be warm (27 for Stirling, 31 for Adelaide) - good for burning off.....BUT........some strong winds predicted around the hills - potentially up to 55 km/hr at this stage - not so good for burning off, if you want to keep your fire under control! So, if you are going to be burning off, please factor in the forecast weather conditions!

18.01.2022 A Total Fire Ban has been declared in the Mt Lofty Ranges (and other places) for Saturday 28th November. The rating is severe.

18.01.2022 Basket Range crews, along with Campbelltown State Emergency Service, had an early morning wake up call, just before 6 am this morning, for a tree down on Hunters Rd. Crews eventually found the tree down at the top end of Pound Rd, and removed it from the road.

18.01.2022 Photos from a small fire, Burdetts Rd, on 25th November 2020. And yes, the terrain is as steep as it looks in the photo!!

17.01.2022 Our Bushfire Ready session, programmed for next Monday has been postponed to a date to be decided, due to Covid. Thank you to those who registered, and those who have expressed an interest. We will schedule another date, once we have some certainty around Covid.... If you are want information about preparing your property for the bushfire season, your bushfire plan etc, go to the CFS website at: www.cfs.sa.gov.au

17.01.2022 Another heads up - looks like there might be a fire ban in the Mt Lofty Ranges on Thursday 19th November - if you are looking at undertaking a burn off tomorrow (Wednesday), be mindful that, should a fire ban be declared on Thursday, the burn off will need to be extinguished by 11.59 pm Wednesday night. The four day fire weather forecast is available on the Bureau of Meteorology site at: http://www.bom.gov.au/sa/forecasts/fire-danger-ratings.shtml

17.01.2022 Crews finished at the first job, and most had managed to get home for around 10 minutes before the next call. This one was to Blockers Rd, for a tree completely blocking the road. The tree was cut up by CFS crews, assisted by Campbelltown State Emergency Service.

16.01.2022 A Total Fire Ban has been declared in the Mt Lofty Ranges (and other places) for Friday 27th November, with an extreme rating. If you have undertaken any burning off in the last week, make sure you check it, and extinguish it before midnight tonight.

16.01.2022 Basket Range CFS is very pleased to have taken delivery of 30 chairs for our station. The chairs were kindly donated to the brigade, and replace the existing 25 + year old hard plastic chairs. The newly received chairs will be much more comfortable than the old!

16.01.2022 Just before midnight on Friday night, along with the rescue brigade - Stirling Country Fire Service - we were responded to a crash at the corner of Lobethal Rd and Hunters Rd. A single vehicle had missed the corner, and landed in the orchard below. The single occupant was not injured.... A bit of a wait for the tow truck, and then we were back at station.

16.01.2022 A heads up for the end of this week - it looks like a total fire ban for both Friday (Extreme) and Saturday (Severe). If you have undertaken any burn offs in the last week, please check them, and ensure they are completely extinguished tomorrow (Thursday), before the (likely) fire ban starting at 12.01 am Friday morning. The fire ban forecast is available on the Met Bureau site at:... http://www.bom.gov.au/sa/forecasts/fire-danger-ratings.shtml

16.01.2022 Four of our Basket Range members - Monica, Chris, Brit and Josh are heading down to the Blackford fire (near Lucindale) very early tomorrow morning, for a shift on the fireground. Stay safe!

15.01.2022 A reminder that our Bushfire Ready session is on tomorrow night Monday, 7th December, at the Basket Range Hall, 7.30pm to 9 pm If you are keen to come along, but haven't yet registered, you still can (the event is free, but you need to book). Scan the QR code on the attached flyer, or click on this link to register:... https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx... Alternatively, you can contact CFS Community Engagement on 8115 3318 We hope you see you there. (Note, you don't have to live in Basket Range to attend!)

15.01.2022 Thanks to all those who came along to our' Bushfire Ready' Session last Monday. We hope you got some useful information from it! Special thanks to Michael Coulson, from CFS Community Engagement for coming along and presenting the session.

15.01.2022 Basket Range crews were kept busy overnight, attending three tree down jobs. The first one was reported around 10.15pm, on Lobethal Rd, in the vicinity of Sutton's Corner, along with Campbelltown State Emergency Service. Crews found two branches on the road, which were easily removed. ... The third was a bit more problematic, with the top of the tree snapping, but remaining attached to trunk, around 10 metres above the ground, and hanging over the road. A little bit of rope work, and some brute strength, and the top portion of the tree came down.

14.01.2022 Upon completion of the second tree on Blockers rd, crews were advised by a local resident of another tree completely blocking the road at the other end of Blockers Rd. Crews headed to the opposite end of Blockers Rd, and found two trees blocking the road. The chainsaw got a good workout again, with the tree cut up the road cleared.

14.01.2022 National Volunteer Week's started tomorrow - and you can get involved!

13.01.2022 Welcome home Basket Range 14!! Our small appliance, Basket Range 14 has been away for the last 6 weeks, having some repairs undertaken, including removing the tank, fixing some leaks, fixing tank mounts and a few other things. It was returned to us today looking very shiny, having been detailed as well!!... This returns us back to two appliances at the station.

13.01.2022 The East Torrens Group (of which Basket Range is a part) received a new BW11 last weekend. The 'BW' refers to 'Bulk Water Carrier' and 11 to carrying around 11,000 litres of water. This one is based at Summertown.... The other East Torrens BW11 is based at Norton Summit.

13.01.2022 It is with sadness we advise the passing of former member Trixie Moyle. Trixie was an active member of the Basket Range CFS ladies auxiliary. The 1980's were a very busy time for the ladies auxiliary - they organised / provided food for firefighters on the fire ground (much like what happens now), however, the ladies auxiliary undertook fundraising for the brigade - to raise the funds needed for the brigade to run (in the days before the ESL).... Trixie was part of an active group which organised progressive dinners, cake stalls, orchid shows and many more events. Now reunited with husband Kingsley, and son Peter. Thank you Trixie for your service to the Basket Range Community.

12.01.2022 Basket Range 14 responded yesterday to assist a landowner with a burn off at Blockers Rd. The burn off was going nicely, but the landowners were concerned that it might escape. Our crews assisted with extinguishing a few smouldering trees and left the burn off with the landowners.... This photo gives a good indication of the steepness of the terrain!

12.01.2022 Our large appliance - Basket Range 24 responded to a crash on Lobethal Rd, between the monument and Basket Range Rd, around 6.45 tonight. A single car had collided with an embankment. No injuries, but a bit of a second hand car. The car was towed, and crews returned to station about an hour later.

12.01.2022 National Parks have several prescribed burns planned around Basket Range and surrounding areas (as well as other areas) over spring and autumn. National Parks have produced a video that explains a bit about the processes they undertake, before a prescribed burn off is undertaken.

11.01.2022 Tonight is our first training night back, after Christmas Break. Station open from 7.30pm. New members welcome!

11.01.2022 A Total Fire Ban has been issued for Friday 19th February, for the Mt Lofty Ranges (and other places). The rating is severe. Stay cool!

11.01.2022 Tomorrow, Sunday 29th November, National Parks are undertaking a hazard reduction burn on private land, between Lobethal Rd and Deviation Rd, Forest Range. Numerous National Parks appliances will be in attendance, along with some CFS crews - including our Basket Range 24 and five crew. Light up time is planned around 1 pm.... The predicted weather conditions look really good for a burn, such as this one.

10.01.2022 The winds are starting to pick up around Basket Range - and the Weather Bureau has issued a severe weather warning for many areas - including the Mt Lofty Ranges. If you undertook a burn off in the last few days, make sure you check it and ensure it is completely extinguished - while we have rain coming, the wind is coming first, and could stir up the embers of what remains of a burn off, and head off to places you don't want burn!

09.01.2022 Basket Range 14 responded to a report of a fire in the vicinity of Hunters Rd, around 3.30pm this afternoon. Upon investigation, we located a burn off on Knotts Hill Rd / Pound Rd / Osborne Rd, with the owner in attendance. We checked the burn off, and are happy that it is not going to escape. ... Despite the strong winds in parts of the area, the winds in the area of the burn weren't as strong. The fire is likely to burn for a while. If you are concerned about a fire, please call 000, and the CFS will investigate.

09.01.2022 Our two appliances responded to a report of a burn off out of control on Knotts Hill Rd, around 11.45 this morning. The landowners had been burning off a pile of logs (this time of year is a good time for bush fire cleanup!), but were concerned when it started burning up the trunks of a few trees. The landowner had a water supply and portable pump on site as well.... Crews assisted the owner with extinguishing the trees, and left the remaining logs alight - with the fire not having anywhere else to go.

09.01.2022 Also at our AGM, the Group Officer elect, Gavin, presented the brigade with a new piece of equipment - a brand new thermal imaging camera (TIC). The TIC is a valuable tool, particularly in mopping up, as it enables us to identify potential hot spots, often not visible with the naked eye. Thank you CFS for our new piece of kit, ready for use for the next fire season!

08.01.2022 Today, Basket Range 24 and nine crew (not all of them squeezed into the truck!), were responded to a burn off out of control around 4.45 this afternoon. (Wednesday) A small burn off had been undertaken on Burdetts Rd earlier in the day, and appeared to be almost out. Those conducting the burn off left, and returned later to check on the burn. The wind sprung up as they were on site, and the fire took off up the steep hill.... Our neighbours from Summertown & Districts CFS Brigade , Carey Gully CFS and Norton Summit - Ashton CFS Brigade also attended to provide extra water, and some more crews (thanks guys!). This fire is a good indicator that the fuel is drying out, and the fire will move quickly, particular with a bit of wind behind it (as was the case with this fire).

08.01.2022 Heads up, we have a report of a fire at Raymond’s Rd, Marble Hill. Numerous crews are responding- keep alert.

08.01.2022 As mentioned in our earlier post, numerous crews responded to a fire off Raymonds Rd today. The fire was a rekindle from an earlier burn off (not from today)). A quick response from those nearby, and the CFS crews prevented the spread of the fire.... Thanks Josh Boyce for the photo

07.01.2022 For training last night, some of our newer members were working on basic pumping on our 24 appliance.

07.01.2022 Yesterday, 4 crew members from Basket Range CFS (Captain Pip, Firefighters Chantal, Ashes & Josh) head up to the Basket Range Primary School, as part of a school fire drill. The drill involved students and staff, and what they would do, should a bushfire threaten the school. The school did very well with their drill, with the students being very calm and organised.... Following the drill, all students had a go at using the fire hoses off the appliances!

06.01.2022 Training last night had a few different aspects. A few new members went through burn over drill, a few more map reading, and a bunch more headed down to Stonyfell to find a fire hydrant. This is FF Karen, demonstrating flushing a standpipe.... The pit was full of sand, meaning a standpipe could not be sunk (eg connected), so crews flushed out the sand, to enable that to happen.

05.01.2022 Back in August, we were supplied a new thermal imaging camera (TIC) by CFS. The TIC assists us in identifying hot spots that we may not be able to see with the naked eye. Our burn off last night gave crews the opportunity to have a play with the new camera, and get an idea of what it can do.... One of our firefighters, Sally was trying it out on the bonfire.

05.01.2022 We are a bit late on posting our celebration of International Woman day (alas, away from the computer, and all the data I need!) As Captain, and someone who takes lots of photos, I wanted to find a photo of each of the women in the Basket Range CFS, and share to our facebook page. As I was sorting through the hundreds of photos I have of the Basket Range CFS, around 6.30 tonight, my pager went off for a crash on Lobethal Rd, towards Ashton.... The crews out on the appliance consisted of 2 male firefighters, and 4 females! Well done ladies!!! As Captain of the Basket Range CFS, thank you to the ladies who make up part of the brigade - both the firefighters and the support members. Thank you to the ladies (and the men!) who support our members, and enable to them to drop everything, and head out to an incident, or attend training. And thanks to the men in the brigade too - without their support, we wouldn't have the brigade we have today! And thanks to the Stirling Country Fire Service (including one female firefighter) for their help at the incident tonight. Pip - Basket Range Captain

05.01.2022 There have been many changes to the SA Fire & Emergency Services Act Regulations, which commences tomorrow, 1st March 2021. While many of these changes are administrative, and impact only on the internal running of a brigade, there are a few that impact the public, during the fire danger season. The most important one to be aware of is a change related to the use of 'hot tools' - such as angle grinders, welders and other cutting tools, which could generate sparks / embers etc.... There is a change in the requirements for use of these tools during the fire danger season (not on a fire ban - they cannot be used without a permit). The main change being you must now have a 10 metre cleared space around the activity - an increase from previous 4 metres. You are still required to have water, or an appropriate extinguisher on hand. For information about the changes to the Regulations, see https://www.legislation.sa.gov.au//Fire%20and%20Emergency% For information on what you can, or can't do during the fire danger season, see the CFS Website (note the information displayed are the regulations as of today - tomorrow the new regulations will come into effect, and the information listed will be updated tomorrow) https://www.cfs.sa.gov.au/ban/what-can-i-do-what-cant-i-do/

05.01.2022 Our large appliance (Basket Range 24) responded to a tree blocking one lane of Hunters Rd, around 10.40 this morning. A large tree had fallen, and protruded onto the road, above the waterfall. We removed the lower branches, and were assisted by SES with their pole saw to reach the highers ones.... The road is all clear again.

04.01.2022 The Basket Range CFS held its AGM on Monday night, in the Basket Range Hall (to ensure we complied with Covid restrictions). While it was not an election year, there were two supplementary elections - Joel was elected training coordinator, and Neil WH&S Rep. CFS Service awards were also presented to the following members:... Mark D - 10 years Bruce - 10 years Ned - 20 years Neil 30 years Thanks to all those who attended the meeting.

04.01.2022 Around 4.30 this morning, Basket Range 24, and our neighbours from Carey Gully CFS responded to a report of a smoke alarm at a property on Cramond Rd. Crews investigated the alarm, and did not locate any sign of fire or smoke. The crew returned to station around 20 minutes later.

04.01.2022 Following the easing of some Covid19 restrictions, we are back to CFS training, each Monday night, from 7.30 pm to 9.30 pm. With the winter weather, we do our best to find warm and dry things to do! If you are interested in joining the Basket Range CFS,or finding out a bit more about what's involved, you are welcome to head up to the station (or send us a message via Facebook), or both!

03.01.2022 Members of the East Torrens Group will be out and about this morning on our annual fire track inspection- driving the fire tracks in the area. You may see a line of CFS and other 4 wheel drives around. If you do, give us a wave!

03.01.2022 Last night we undertook a burn off at a property off Lobethal Rd, on behalf of a landowner. Some of the pile burnt OK (although not as well as we had hoped!). And yes, the surrounding areas is as green an lush as it looks in the photo!... The pile may burn for a little longer this week, so you may see some smoke. We are keeping an eye on it and will ensure it is fully extinguish before Friday, when we expect there will be a total fire ban imposed.

02.01.2022 And we're back to training....sort of! With easing of some Covid19 restrictions, we can now have a maximum of 10 people at face to face training - subject to social distancing rules etc. We are hopeful (like everyone else!) that restrictions will ease further over the coming weeks, so that more members can attend training together.

02.01.2022 Basket Range CFS will be activating our station siren today, around 11.30 am, for a short time, as part of an exercise. If you hear it, there is no need to worry, as it is an exercise only. For our neighbours Norton Summit - Ashton CFS Brigade Summertown & Districts CFS Brigade, Carey Gully CFS you may be able to hear it too.

02.01.2022 Bushfire Ready - Take Two!! Our Bushfire Ready session, planned for November, was postponed due to the covid lockdown. We have been able to schedule another session - for Monday 7th December, 7.30 pm to 9pm at the Basket Range Hall.... Come along (it's free!) and learn about bushfire behaviour, bushfire warnings and more. All welcome, but you MUST book. (You don't need to live in Basket Range to come along!) Scan the QR code on the attached flyer, or click on this link to register: https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx Alternatively, you can contact CFS Community Engagement on 8115 3318 Please share this information with your neighbours!

02.01.2022 A reminder that Fire Restrictions for the Mt Lofty Ranges commences from midnight, tonight (Monday 30th November). This means any burn offs that might still be going, need to be extinguished by midnight tonight. No burning off in the open from midnight tonight, without a permit.... There are a number of other activities that are restricted, or prevented under the restrictions. If you are not sure what they are, see the CFS website at: https://www.cfs.sa.gov.au/ban/what-can-i-do-what-cant-i-do/

01.01.2022 The Annual General Meeting of the Basket Range CFS will be held on Monday 31st August, 8pm at the Basket Range Hall. It is not an election year, however there is a supplementary election for Training Coordinator and Workplace Health, Safety & Welfare Coordinator. The meeting is being held in the Hall, as it allows us to comply with Covid restrictions, re density.... Hopefully, in 28 days, we will still be able to hold our meeting - however, with the ever changing situation re Covid means this could change.
