25.01.2022 Early this term Michael began to make balsa planes and gave them out to the children to play with. A few Saturdays ago I bumped into Michael at the hardware shop purchasing sheets of balsa wood. What do you have planned for your weekend? I asked. Well said Michael, I have had a few requests for the planes so thought I might get some cut out ready. A few requests is an understatement. From the smallest to the oldest the children have been flying their planes, making adjustments and modifications, painting them, adjusting throwing angles to suit the breeze and fine tuning whatever needs it. It is a cycle of, take plane to top of forest garden, throw, run down hill, retrieve, run up hill, adjust, throw again, repeat until bell goes, take to Michael for repairs.

23.01.2022 Last week the children rescued a many legged crawling bug and found a safe place for it live. Today they decided with the coming hot weather, and possible fires, lightening storms and torrential rains the bugs might need some safe havens to hide in. Skinks, hopper ants, spiders and all kinds of crawling creatures were treated to new homes with complex entry and exit halls. Afterwards a quiet read in the library - the perfect end to the morning.

23.01.2022 It was lovely to meet some new families last time. We would love to welcome more. Please share our event for and wide!

18.01.2022 Whilst Multiculturalism is integrated throughout the Steiner Curriculum, these last few weeks in our classes we have had a special focus on NAIDOC week. Daily we have been reading and drawing from ‘Welcome to Country’ written by Aunty Joy Murphy Wandin and illustrated by Lisa Kennedy. Aunty Joy uses Story to bring people together and as a conduit for understanding Aboriginal culture. ‘Welcome to Country’ emphasises the connection to environment and community and the symbolism... of inviting outsiders to connect with the land and people of a region. First the children paint a background using the wet on wet process practiced in Steiner Schools. The next day they add new detail using crayons, pencil or layered painting techniques. The object is to keep the work open ended and reflect on the story layer each day to be ‘told’ by the work when it is finished. A challenging task requiring considered planning, a skilled eye and the discipline to know when to stop. See more

18.01.2022 Last week of term and it’s all action. Start the morning with a concert rehearsal and set up, move to in class rehearsals for year 7 presentations and the school RAP performances, then a little painting, some candle making, a bit of woodwork, some gift making for Nancy to remember us by and zoom - Monday is done!

14.01.2022 Science in the Mainstream classroom. We are learning to use the microscopes ready for our excursion to the local creek where we will find and identify the bugs we find in the water and work out what this tells us about the health of our waterways! The children are loving the microscopes. Thank you Peter Geers for giving up your time to help us with our science work!

13.01.2022 This is one of our amazing year 7 students! So proud. 3 of our mainstream students and one of our previous students (who is now at St Johns) involved in this. I will post each of the sections involving our students (if you want to see all of the sections head over to the HSTA page). Can’t wait for to see the next one!

12.01.2022 First pot done!

11.01.2022 What a wonderful day of whole school togetherness we had today. Before lunch Michael’s Class we’re playing a favourite game on the hardcourt when the older children came running out wanting to join in. Such a great mix of competition and team work. Later in the day we honoured some of our volunteers who help out regularly at the school; Judith, Peter, and Chris who gave out the reading and sports challenge medals and certificates. Big smiles all around.

10.01.2022 The mainstream children are throwing pots!!

10.01.2022 SILENT AUCTION - we have finished the first of our two gorgeous collaborative art pieces. This one was designed by one of our year 6 mainstream students. The mainstream class all created the petals and we filled in the middle with recycled beads. Bidding starts at $50 and will end at 6.30pm on Friday 27th November. ... ***The winning bidder will be announced at our Christmas Market and can collect from the school. We will also confirm the winner on here. *** Happy bidding!

09.01.2022 More microscope work with Peter. We are so lucky - it feels like we are in high school science sometimes we have learnt so much!

09.01.2022 It’s always such a pleasure to take our students places. Today we visited Norton Summit PS for a regular inter school chess competition. All of the students gained points and we came 2nd overall with one of our year 7s winning the best player of the day! These children amaze me every day. Every single one of them did our school proud!

09.01.2022 I can’t help but put up another little story. This one is called, ‘There’s a fine line between pleasure and pain’ and you will see what I mean when you look at the children’s faces. Friday was hot hot hot with a hot dry wind. We all kept in mind the possibility of fire (thank goodness the bugs had their new shelters!), and stayed close to the buildings. And yes the alarm did go off but that wasn’t the most exciting part. The most exciting part was when spraying the children with the hose, a favourite hot day activity, the children colluded to get Michael; what joy and laughter was had by all. In my experience that is a good indication of the trust and goodwill the children feel toward a teacher. Fires, storms and pestilence...I think we’ve had it all this year!

08.01.2022 What a fabulous achievement. 3 of the 8 runner up prizes in the John Gardner Christmas in Australia card competition went to students from the Basket Range Mainstream classroom! What an achievement - we are so proud of our talented students!
