25.01.2022 Edit your life frequently and ruthlessly. It’s your masterpiece after all. Nathan W. Morris On 1 September I was challenged to another round of the #minsgame. You find 1 thing to declutter on the 1st, 2 on the 2nd, 3 on the 3rd... all the way to 30 on the 30th. Trying religiously to live a low-clutter life, I thought I’d barely make the first week. How could I possibly get through the month? But by challenging some of my old thoughts (like: Just because all my cookie cutte...rs fit in the allocated storage tin, does that really mean I need to keep ALL of them?) and some home truths (like: Can I even remember the last time I wore that?) plus a few items chipped in by hubster and the kidlets- I made it. September 30 and we are 465 items lighter than we were just one month ago. Never underestimate how good letting go feels. Try it- even when you don’t think your stuff is weighing you down. Edit your home, edit your schedule, edit your email subscriptions- just edit. And be REALLY intentional about what you let back in! This image is off me driving all of those items pictured to donation centers across Canberra. #damnitfeelsgood And if you want to know more about the minsgame, check out @theminimalists or Bec and I dedicating a whole episode to chatting about it in the @beuncluttered podcast approximately a year ago. #edit #ruthlesslyedityourlife #clutter #declutter #decluttering #declutteryourlife #simplicity #simplehome #simplelife #simpleliving #theminimalists #livewithless #intentionalliving #basklife

25.01.2022 If someone told you your days were numbered how would you react? What if your days weren’t numbered in the sense that your ruin or downfall was imminent, but numbered in the sense that each day of your life had a known unique consecutive number and was identifiable in its own right? Would you live more intentionally? Maybe you’d be more mindful of making the most of it if you knew that this wasn’t just another unremarkable Thursday in 2020 but day #14661 of your life. I ex...plore this idea in my latest blog post- check it out via my website. Link in bio. PS- 14661 is not just a random number- I am living that one today! Crikey that makes me feel ancient! #intentionalliving #simplifyyourlife #essentialism #intentional #intentionallife #yourdaysarenumbered #makeeverydaycount #makethemostofit #takenothingforgranted #tomorrowisntpromised #basklife

24.01.2022 Anyone else love Mondays? I get this little giddy feeling on a Monday morn about what the week ahead holds- endless possibilities and exciting opportunities. For so many years, I would think of Monday with dread- I would spring load myself for the week ahead and inwardly groan about what mountain of life had to be climbed in the next 5 days. Not any more. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not all fluffy bunnies and rainbows but I feel in control and energized about what’s coming my w...ay. The answer is all in saying ‘yes to less’- SIMPLIFY! STREAMLINE! AUTOMATE! And then enjoy. Please reach out if you feel like you need some advice in this area because I’d love to help you kick that overwhelm to the curb! Then you can join the #ilovemonday club.

23.01.2022 A rule is a rule. In my house I practice the 1-in, 1-out rule whenever possible. So when I wandered past our local street library and saw these three books I fancied (Eleanor Oliphant has been on my wish list for ages) I went straight home and found three other books that I’d finished with and walked back to the street library to swap them. Net result- no extra clutter in my bookshelf. Some people find rules like this pretty restrictive but for me it’s all about keeping a fine balance between stuff and space. Have you got any practices like this to keep the volume of your stuff in check? Tell me below. xx

23.01.2022 The art of being happy lies in the power of extracting happiness from common things. Henry Ward Beecher Sometimes the simplest joys are the best ones and the most common things bring you the greatest happiness. I saw this little table and chair set converted into a succulent garden on the sidewalk and it just made me smile. Take a pause when something (no matter how small) makes you smile today and be grateful for it. And- if you want to share what that little thing was then please let me know below. xx #smallthings #smallthingsmatter #smallthingsmakemehappy #smallthingsarebigthings #simple #simplepleasures #simplelife #simplifyyourlife #simplifyyourlife #noticethelittlethings #littlethings #littlethingsinlife #littlethingsarebigthings #grateful #gratitude #lifecoach #lifestyle #basklife

22.01.2022 Your brain is for processing- not for storage! One of the key ways I stay simplified, organised and prepared is by not relying on my brain for storage of the trivial stuff. We have these amazing little devices which we carry everywhere with us and could utilize far better to get some of the insignificant stuff out of our heads and make more room for processing or just being quiet. Ahh- imagine having a quiet brain! I store a huge amount of incidental data in my phone, eith...er in notes or images, like: - the brand/ serial number of our printer ink - my business abn - the brand/ flavour of toothpastes my kids like - the colour and serial number of the paint on our walls and outdoor trim - the name/ intensity of coffee pods my hubby prefers - school holiday dates and pupil free days - the books I want to buy or read someday - the ideas I have when out and about for future blog posts or recipes to cook - upcoming birthdays - when school photo day, dentist appts or dance concerts are scheduled I could go on for ages but I’m pretty sure you get the point. We try to carry so much information around in our heads that it causes us brain fog, overwhelm or which we simply can’t recall when we actually need to. Start dumping that data out of your heads and into your phones- set reminders if you need to. Use the tools which you have at your disposal and free your brain up for processing or just relaxing without being weighed down by all that trivia. It makes life so much simpler! You’re welcome. 21.01.2022 One sure path to simplicity is to figure out what success looks like FOR YOU! We spend waaay too much time marching to the beat of other people’s drums- trying to measure up to their idea of success, neglecting our own perspective. For some people success is measured by possessions, for others it’s available time. Many rate their level of success on the freedom they feel in making choices or their ability to be nomadic. Forget what success looks like for everyone else- what ...does success look like for you? Maybe it’s getting to the end of 2020 with all relationships in tact, maybe it’s simply keeping your job, maybe it’s none of these things and maybe it changes everyday. For me it’s not money in the bank, but being surrounded by the people and things which I love and having the physical and emotional availability to enjoy them. And one day I hope those things will include some chickens- hence the image. If you don’t know what your own idea of success is today, or any day, how do you know what to strive for? And how do you know if you get there? Quit the complexity of striving for others goals and discern your own image of success. That’s where simplicity lies. Happy Saturday. 20.01.2022 Are delayed decisions complicating your life and killing your productivity? Too often, whether with physical items or administrative tasks, we mistakenly believe that if we put the decision of ‘what to do?’ off for a while, it will be easier to make in future. We believe we are trading hard decisions now for easy decisions later but this is a false bargain. Things that are easy to decide on now will be just as easy in two weeks time and hard decision will be just as hard if n...ot harder down the track. Whether you have multitudes of un-actioned stuff laying around your home or un-actioned tasks floating around in your head they distract you, add a feeling of stress or overwhelm and lower your productivity. So what can we do to resolve this? It's this simple: If you are looking at, touching or thinking about something, acknowledge that you're already half way to deciding. Your brain has connected with it. You are instantaneously cognitively involved. Why not stay involved, make the decision and get it done? Otherwise you leave it and have to come back later and take more time to get reacquainted with the detail of that task or item to formulate your decision. And when your mind knows you have many unmade decisions this weighs on us and slows us down. When you have engaged your brain enough to think that you need to make a decision about something, use that cognitive momentum to actually make the decision. And even better - act on it. It will increase your productivity, save your time and simplify your life. This resonate? Click through the link in bio to read the detailed version of this post on my blog. Happy Saturday. 19.01.2022 Procrastinating in a productive way... we’ll at least that’s what I’m calling this. I’ve had this canvas on my wall for years and while I loved the image, I always thought it looked a bit lacking. So today, when I really should have been getting some work done, I’ve decided to cut it off the timber frame and pop it behind glass. And just quietly- I like it so much better. I achieve LOADS of good stuff when I’m not doing what I’m supposed to be doing. So, anyway... where was I an hour ago before I got distracted... Anyone else a productive procrastinator?

16.01.2022 I beg of you: USE WHAT YOU HAVE AND HAVE WHAT YOU LOVE. This is one of my core principles in maintaining a simple and uncluttered life- the stuff I own and use is the stuff I love. Like this hand-painted plate which I’ve owned since I was the age pictured in the third photo- ie FOREVER. For the longest time this plate was wrapped in tissue paper and stored away in a box at the back of a cupboard. It moved many houses and states with me and spent almost 4 years in a storage c...ontainer in Oz because I felt it too valuable to take overseas. But NOT ANYMORE. The last 5 years have seen a revolution in my home and now we only have what we love and we use what we have. So this plate regularly gets dragged out with cookies or fruit on it for a snack, when kids have friends over as a share-plate or sometimes when it’s just me sitting down with a piece of cake for afternoon tea. I know you’re thinking, ‘But what if you break it?’ - My reply: ‘It is better to have been used, appreciated and broken then never to have been admired at all.’ Have a look around your home and consider what you’re keeping but not using because it’s ‘too precious.’ Imagine the grim notion of it never being truly enjoyed in your lifetime because you were focused on ‘saving it.’ Ask yourself: What exactly are you saving it for? Every single day is a gift, so use the crystal glasses you got for your wedding and the hand-painted plates you’ve had since you were a baby and just bloody enjoy them! Tell me below what special thing you have been saving but might just start using xx #clutter #declutter #beuncluttered #simple #simplicity #simplehome #simplifiedhome #simplelifestyle #simpleliving #simplelife #usewhatyouhave #havewhatyoulove #home #lifestyle #basklife

13.01.2022 Stop being so bloody positive all the time... when you aren’t actually feeling that way! There is this ongoing portrayal, especially on social media, that we need to be positive, upbeat and happy all of the time. The truth is, faking it won’t make it. If you are feeling any of the other squillion emotions on the spectrum from utter joy to deepest despair- you need to stop denying it, stop brushing it away and definitely stop judging yourself for it. If you feel sad, anxious, ...lonely or overwhelmed try leaning in to start understanding it. Where does the feeling come from? What is it telling you about your values? What can you learn from it? We are going through a seriously confusing and intensely uncertain time and collectively we need to stop eating and boozing our way through our feelings, bottling them up and belittling ourselves for having them. Choose to be with WHATEVER YOU ARE FEELING today, in a compassionate way. Denying your emotions won’t eradicate them. Instead normalize them. Give them a name. Call them out. Allow them to be part of your story so that you can eventually move past them. And take down that fake happy #goodvibes image from your socials if that isn’t really how your feeling- we need acknowledgement of genuine emotions, not denial. 13.01.2022 Simplifying 101: don’t overload your ‘to-do’ list. We all know that feeling of having a maximum sized list of tasks and a minimal amount of time to get them done. This is a surefire recipe for feeling stressed and overwhelmed which is usually swiftly followed by avoidance and procrastination. Yup- been there. Anyone else found themselves randomly cleaning skirting boards when they’re supposed to be tackling client notes and podcast prep? What’s the solution? - the mag...ic number 3. Only put 3 MUST-DOS on your list for any one day and make sure they’re realistic and achievable. Avoid putting vague or limitless tasks like: - write book - coursework - declutter house Try instead: - write 1000 words - work on course for 1 hour - Declutter 15 items Then anything else you’re tempted to write on your ‘to-do’ list put under ‘nice-to-do.’ These things are not your top 3, they are the extra things you may or may not get today after your top 3 are complete. When you slim down your daily to-dos, it works your prioritizing muscle and kicks overwhelm to the kerb. And that, my dears, is one sure strategy to simplify your life! You’re welcome. 12.01.2022 Ask anyone what their top goals are and attaining ‘happiness’ is sure to show up somewhere in their list. But know that happiness is NOT a destination to be reached or a trinket which once attained is held onto forever- happiness is a feeling that occurs when you are living intentionally, in alignment with your values, are present in the moment and free from regrets. Remember to live your life well and the happiness will take care of itself. #happy #happiness #happinessbegins #simplify #essentialism #livewell #basklife

11.01.2022 I love simplicity! So I want to let you in on a few of the strategies I use to keep my life simple. Every Saturday- right here. Now first- I have to address the big question you’re all pondering. Why an image of loo roll? Because this week’s strategy is about being selective with subscriptions. I was reminded of this strategy I employ, when last week the loo roll company I buy from asked me if I wanted to subscribe to monthly delivery so that I never run out. Now other than... the recent Covid-induced smash and grab for loo roll, I have never had a problem getting hold of the white stuff when I needed it. And I can never recall a time, other than an unfortunate camping experience as a teen, where I’ve ever come close to running out. So why commit to more than I need? Why sign myself up to be inundated? Because it seems convenient? Because I’m saving money? But what about the cost of storage- I’ll have to add an extension to my laundry to hold the excess. But hey- it saves me 3 minutes every other month buying loo roll....C’mon people!! It’s not just excess volumes of loo roll that clutter our lives- we oversubscribe to heaps of stuff! Streaming services, books and magazines, grocery deliveries, gaming, make-up and personal items, software, meal-kits, tea, coffee, snacks, fitness classes, online courses and more! We aspire to be the person that will use it ALL but aspiration doesn’t equal reality. You think you’re winning with an auto-renewal, saving cash and recurrent decision making but what you might be getting is an ongoing supply of guilt and an abundance of stuff you don’t actually have the time to use or space to store. One sure way to simplify is to STOP BEFORE YOU SUBSCRIBE- and ask yourself if this commitment represents genuine value or just an ongoing supply of aspirational clutter? What subscriptions do you maintain? 10.01.2022 I know how to make a bunch of Kale disappear. You just make it into kale chips. My kids were skeptics when I first floated the idea, but then one day I make them wear blindfolds and open their mouths. They had no idea what they were eating but they both loved it! Blind-folds removed and they couldn’t believe that green leaves could taste so damn good. Now they’re converts and don’t need any convincing. Yesterday my huge bunch of kale went from fridge to oven to tummies i...n under 30mins! Ta-da... disappearing kale. Far and away the best magic trick I know. What magic food tricks do you try with your kiddos?

08.01.2022 What’s your signature style for productivity? Are you a stickler for a rigid routine in your day to reduce decision fatigue, overwhelm and feel in control or do you like the ebb and flow of a general rhythm which changes depending on your mood, the season and other variables? For many a routine is essential for keeping them on track and reaching their goals, especially if they’re forgetful, but for others the lack of flexibility can be stifling. ... For many the fluidity and freedom of a rhythm allows them to tap into their creativity and linger a little longer without the fear of failure, but for others it can feel chaotic and unproductive. And for some (including me ), a bit of both routine and rhythm in their day is the recipe for success. Bec and I chat all about the pros and cons of rhythms and routines and when they might serve you on this week’s episode of the @beuncluttered podcast.
