23.01.2022 We are now in the process of installing this artwork over the next couple of months.

23.01.2022 2019 is going to be a big year as the Centre aims for more visitors to see what is often described as a fantastic display. The Norfolk remains the main attraction, but many other facets give the visitor a real sense of our nautical history. Come see for yourself and enjoy a coffee at the Gunn's Deck Cafe.

18.01.2022 We have made the step and the museum will be open for weekends, initially 11am - 2 pm. Let all your friends know . It really is an amazing place. Just check out our TripAdvisor comments.

18.01.2022 This is an interesting one with several variations on it meaning . IN A PIGS EAR seems to have come from a term for something messy, refers to an upper deck urinal used by sailors when on watch. Incidentally, Jack's expressions for a call of nature, all of which allude to experiences at sea, include, syphon the python, pumping the ship, ease springs, check the ship for leaks and springing a leak. It seems to have been used in many variation. Any one an expert?

18.01.2022 Finding Matthew Flinders body after a such a long mystery as to his whereabouts will generate a lot of interest both in the U.K. and his home town Donnington U.K. , but also in Australia where he is remembered in so many places. We have so much of his history at the Bass and Flinders Centre with the Sloop Norfolk and the Tom Thumb and displays of his life. He did so much in such a short life with his friend George Bass. Come check us out.

18.01.2022 WE ARE GOING TO STAY CLOSED. At this stage we still have a lot of work to get ready to open, and as our Information Centre and Watchhouse have now closed, we will remain closed to the public due to Covid-19.

18.01.2022 Have you seen the washing machine on board the Norfolk and typical of old sailing boats. You tie the clothing in through the the holes and tie a rope to the "washing machine " then throw it overboard. Clothes are washed automatically in an hour or so. How simple is that. See more at the Bass and Flinders Centre George Town.

17.01.2022 MANY CAME AND HAD A LOOK. Yes it was a great day to have a look and to celebrate the entry of the Norfolk 3 Nov 1798, coming into the Tamar River . We look forward to a bigger an better event for 2019, but that's a while into the future. Thanks again to all that visited.

16.01.2022 Installation Stage 2 The Admiral has arrived into the Bass and Flinders Centre. Now work starts on preparing it for display.

16.01.2022 Part of our Sloop Norfolk display is Trim the cat. Matthew Flinders adopted a cat and took it aboard most of his voyages of discovery. See Trim asleep on board the Norfolk on our open day this Saturday 3 November. A day that is important to our history.

15.01.2022 We had the pleasure today of the band "SeaGrass " at the Centre today. May look at getting them back some time in the future.

14.01.2022 TEMPORARY CLOSURE FOR ADMIRAL INSTALLATION For details see link www.bassandflinders.org.au

10.01.2022 The time come for me (Peter Hale) to retire. After being involved with the Bass and Flinders Centre since 2005 and the last 4 years as manager, its time to retire and hand over to others to carry on. The Centre is in good shape both physically and financially, with the entrance to the museum remodelled, with a new shop, adding a popular experience for visitors. There are plans in hand to install another historic boat in March 2020, which will add a final chapter to the legac...y of Bern Cuthberson’s contribution to the State’s maritime history; in particularly the Norfolk; the reason that the Centre exists in the first place. The Centre is run by volunteers and has been a self-funded Trust run by a Trustees, since opening in 2006. There is no other organisational involvement, but the Trust is open to suggestions as to how it can remain one of the icons of George Town. So those interested in taking over should start a conversation with the Centre . Best wishes Peter Hale General Manager

09.01.2022 Have you heard the origin of the saying you are a tow rag . Well it comes from the early days when you needed to go to the toilet on a sailing ship. With no toilet paper they used a soft ended rope, (as per our photo of one on the sloop Norfolk) . It was towed behind the ship to keep it clean. Hence it was a ‘tow rag’. Not a very nice thing to be called.

09.01.2022 Don't forget tomorrow Sat. 3 Nov OPEN DAY as our celebration of Bass and Flinders sailing into Port Dalrymple and spending time in the Tamar Valley. Also opening day for the Gunn's Deck Cafe now under new management with great snacks and coffee.

08.01.2022 The Centre is going to close over winter as we did last year. There is too much reliance on a couple of volunteers to man the place over the quiet period. We will still have our regulars attending, like Soroptomist and school groups and if any group that would like to visit during this time, send us an email and we should be able to open for you. Closure is 1 June to reopen 2 Sept. 2019. We will give updates on anything as we go along.

08.01.2022 We are starting a new shop and purchasing some good books and other things. Come see us!

07.01.2022 Not much has changed since we shut in March and as we head into winter and with no interstate visitors we will stay shut. At this stage we will look to open 1 September at the earliest. We will monitor what happens from now on and make announcements as appropriate. Like most volunteer organisations , we are staffed by those in the older and covid-19 'at risk' members, so it remains a wait and see how we proceed from here.

07.01.2022 We are finally getting ready to reopen, at this stage only for weekends. We are going to monitor the visitor numbers into the state before we get to a 7 day opening. Needless to say we invite all our previous volunteers to come and see us, as we need your services to be able to manage the reopening times. There are a few new people into our beautiful region, and we would love to welcome you aboard. As we go through the process or reopening, we are looking to change some of th...e management structures of the facility, with the aim of building an all inclusive volunteer organisation that can bring the Centre to its full potential. Our skills on Facebook are limited, but stay in touch as we endeavor to keep you informed on what we are doing. See more
