25.01.2022 Wow. Sandi Dodd. What a talent.

25.01.2022 On Tuesday 27th March, the Bass Valley Community Centre hosted a day’s Family Violence training. The training was organised by Antonia Halloran-Lavelle Coordinator of the Gippsland Regional Neighbourhood Houses Group Inc. A number of neighbourhood house coordinators were in attendance. The focus of the training was to raise awareness around Family Violence and provide those attending with information and strategies on what to do when they become aware of instances. The first... part of the training was called Common Risk Assessment Training (CRAF). It was one of the 227 recommendations of the recent Royal Commission into Family Violence. Its major focus was on the impact that culture has on the perpetration of Family Violence, and not the often quoted ones of alcohol, lower socio-economic status etc. Shocking statistics were part of the awareness raising including: a woman dying almost every day in Australia from Family Violence and seven out of ten women who are murdered in Australia are Family Violence victims The second part of the training was Bystander training. This pointed participants towards strategies for encouraging people to speak out as well as giving them direction towards finding support.

24.01.2022 We are excited! We’ve just received shipment of the equipment for our new Seniors’ Outdoor Gym, all the way from Finland. Can you feel the warm rays of the sun on your skin? Do you see the buds starting to erupt now that spring is here?... It’s an exciting time of the year even if we are amidst a pandemic, because here at Bass Valley Community Centre we are busy working behind the scenes setting up the seniors exercise equipment in our underused space where the children from our child care used to play. Mobility is an integral part of our everyday lives, especially as we get older. We need to have good mobility to freely and easily perform simple tasks like getting up from the table or climbing up and down a set of stairs. Our new exercise equipment will help lower the risk of falls, boost immune functions and burn calories for our older clients. It’s easy to use and they can start off slowly to build muscles and strengthen bones. We will keep you posted on the progress. Let’s make the health and wellbeing of our community a priority. And let’s hope that it not too long before we can be back in full swing at the Bass Valley Community Centre.

24.01.2022 Another activity held at BVCG is Line Dancing. This is held on Wednesday nights from 7 pm until 9 pm. All abilities and experience are very welcome. It's great exercise with great social opportunities. The hall is heated and cooled for your comfort. For information please contact Tracey on 0417 142386... 24.01.2022 Volunteer handy person needed. The Bass Valley Community Group has a lot of volunteers. A lot of our grass is cut by a team from Corrections, although our Klaus does a wonderful job keeping the area around the op shop to park-like standard. We are lucky enough to have volunteer bus drivers, cooks, op shop and office staff and a whole lot more. Just at the moment we need someone to give us a hand with odd jobs here and there.... If you have a bit of time and like that sort of thing, please give us a call on 5678 2277 or drop by.

24.01.2022 Tickets for our Easter Raffle are available in the office or the Op Shop. If you want to see this beautiful and unusual display it is in the Op Shop. I'm sure your dragon would love this home. Thank you to the talented Dympna.

24.01.2022 LPG gas stove for sale We have replaced our hall kitchen stove and are now offering the old one for sale. It is a Technogas 90 cm 5 burner heavy duty stainless steel upright cooker. Many features including triple glazed doors, fan assisted oven, central triple ring burner, electric grill. It is in good order except the piezo starters don't work on all the burners and need to be manually lit. It was purchased in 2012 and new price is over $2000. We are happy to take $100 or nearest offer. If you are interested ring Roderick on 5678 2277

24.01.2022 A Great Visit Last Wednesday, the Friendship Group at the Bass Valley Community Centre were visited by half a dozen students from the South Gippsland Specialist School. They were out and about as part of their Duke of Edinburgh program. Both groups enjoyed each other’s company and the students assisted the group on a couple of projects. The smells coming out of the Centre’s ... kitchen proved too enticing and the students stayed for lunch, spag bol and garlic breadyum! See more

24.01.2022 The Bass Valley Community Centre remains closed. This includes the Bass Hall and associated activities. We are very much hoping that as Victoria starts to open we can too. We are keeping in touch with our social support clients. They too are very eager to get back to some form of business as usual.... We have had some luck though that a water pipe chose to burst while we are closed. It would have been an enormous inconvenience if we were still open. It’s the old tale of pipes and tree roots. In this case we don’t want to cut these massive tree roots and disturb the ash tree. A tree that has its roots cut will often lead to it dropping branches to compensate. We now have a significant trench to accommodate the new piping. And you can see that the major roots have been accommodated. See more

24.01.2022 Jorja Holmes. Only 15 years old but heaps of talent.

23.01.2022 On Monday 30th April the Friendship Group boarded their bus and headed to the barge at Corinella to enjoy a day exploring French Island. After a smooth crossing the group's first stop was a bumpy ride to morning tea at the Bayview cafe and museum. The property houses the oldest chicory kiln on the island. The group were given a history talk and tour, followed by a morning tea of scones and home made jam with cream. Time was then spent exploring the grounds and bird aviar...ies and petting the many animals roaming around. The group then continued to the western side, stopping on the way at the War Memorial and cricket ground. It was then on to the General Store for a delicious lunch. After lunch there was further exploration, this time on the eastern side. A bonus and highlight of the day was coming across the rangers capturing koalas to administer birth control to keep the burgeoning population under control. After this interesting stop, it was on to see the old prison before catching the ferry back home. The Friendship group have outings about once a month. If you would like to join our Friendship Group ring the office on 5678 2277 or look us up on https://www.myagedcare.gov.au. The Group is open to older isolated people and younger people with a disability.

21.01.2022 Did you know.that the Bass Valley Community Centre is an accredited NDIS service provider? The Bass Valley Community Centre offers group-based activities to people who are supported by the National Disability Insurance scheme. What that means is that if you are an adult NDIS client and are socially isolated ie you have difficulty getting out and about, we can pick you up from your home in the Waterline area. If you live in Corinella, Coronet Bay, Tenby Point, Pioneer Bay, G...rantville, Woolamai, Bass or close to any of these locations give us a ring on 5678 2277. 20.01.2022 BVCG runs a number of classes. One of these is genealogy. If you are keen to find out more of your family history, here is a great way to start. You will have access to the Find My Past package and will be given assistance with using this and information on how to start tracing your family. The class is on Fridays from 12.30 pm to 2.30 pm.... The cost per session is $5 for BVCG members (annual membership is just $10) or non members pay $8. Ring the office on 5678 2277 if you would like to join in.

20.01.2022 We was robbed! In what is now becoming an annual event, the Hadden House Op Shop was robbed again. The San Remo Police gave it very prompt attention and we are very grateful to them. As with last year’s robbery, we expect the perpetrators will have a knock on their door in the near future. Luckily, no damage was done, so we thank them for that. And we are not overly concerned that they stole our $50 float. Breaking into an op shop has to be a sign of either desperation or sim...ply pathetic behaviour. However what is a complete nuisance, benefits no one and takes time from worthwhile endeavours is stealing the keys. The keys to the shop, the key to the trailer padlock, the key to the skip. Oh and breaking into the op shop shed, breaking off the door handle in the process as well as stealing those keys. Repair and replacement has been completed and now NO MONEY is kept in the op shop. It would be wonderful if it didn’t happen again. Please? See more

20.01.2022 SoI imagine many will be wondering what the Bass Valley Community Centre is doing now that it has had to be shut down. We are busy supporting our clients in any way that we can. We’ve kept in constant contact with them with phone calls twice a week.... We have also helped them access services they need and filled in with deliveries in the meantime. For Easter we gave the Easter Bunny a bit of help too https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAJCbfQYdmo

19.01.2022 The Bass Valley Community Centre will be closed from Wednesday 23 December to Monday January 4. We wish all in the community a wonderful festive season and join with everyone else in looking forward to a better 2021.

19.01.2022 Advance Notice - Our Autumn Festival is on again next March. Time to start thinking about having a stall. Contact us to secure yours now!

19.01.2022 On their recent trip to French Island, the Friendship Club ran into a couple of rangers who were capturing koalas. The population of koalas on the island is very important. They are one of the few populations in Australia that have not been struck by chlamydia. However they are also such a health population that there are now too many of them for the feed available. The rangers are capturing them to give them a birth-control procedure that last for five years in an effort to limit the population.

19.01.2022 Last call for a lot of fun at the Autumn Festival in Bass this week-end. It’s looking like it could be great weather, so come along and join the crowd. Kicking off Saturday morning at 10:00 am there will be live music all day long. In the wonderful surrounds of the George Bass Park with the stage set up under the trees.... Rides for the children and a bucking bull for the adults, as well as the more adventurous kids. You might care for a coffee or a Devonshire Tea. And be sure to check out the market stallsselling a big assortment of wares. And do you feel lucky? Once again this year we are running our Top Shelf Whiskey Wheel If it’s your lucky day a $2 ticket could get you bottle of whiskey. What a way to top your day at the Bass Valley Autumn Festival. See more

18.01.2022 Please RSVP by Thursday 5th November

18.01.2022 We are looking for car boot and stall holders for election day. Please give us a ring 5678 2277.

18.01.2022 The Centre’s latest project is the development of a Senior’s Outdoor Gym. Increasingly, research is indicating the importance of exercise for older persons. Exercise is seen as important to maintaining strength to limit falls. Also, research is pointing towards exercise’s importance in possibly limiting the effects of dementia. The big problem for older persons is finding opportunities for exercise that are available to them. Particularly if they have ceased to be physical...ly active, exercise can be an unsettling proposition. While there are people in their seventies, eighties and older who ride bikes, many don’t. Even taking regular walks can be a challenge for people who haven’t been physically mobile. Exercise such as water aerobics may be difficult to access. Gentle exercise may not be enough to bring the needed benefit of exercise. A Seniors’ Outdoor Gym offers the opportunity for safe and supervised exercise. A recent project at a retirement facility in Sunshine demonstrated significant progress in building performance of the participants. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUo7rW87mzs So the Bass Valley Community Centre plans to introduce just such a facility. To date we have received funds from the Bass Coast Council and the Bendigo Bank to support the project. We are currently applying for funding from additional sources but are optimistic that such a worthwhile project will attract the necessary funds. Our project budget is approximately $40,0000 and to date we have received about $15,000.

17.01.2022 What to do? The Bass Valley Community Centre hires out the Bass Hall for all sorts of functions: Awards nights, Trivia quizzes, Weddings, Children's parties, Adults parties .and 18th and 21st parties. And that’s where our dilemma lies. Every 18th and 21st we have hired out to, has brought us damage to the Hall and surrounds. And this is despite having spent time with the hirers ensuring that they are aware of what can go wrong and ensuring that they have thought through wha...t they can do to prevent it. The easy answer is to not hire the Hall out for these functions. A number of local halls do just that. However the Hall is a community facility. Clearly, including young people is a very important part of building and strengthening our community. We have had: punched holes in walls, kicked holes in doors, door to our garden shed smashed in, door panels smashed off, our potted plants ripped up and tossed about, sinks clogged with fat, a carpet of chewing gum stuck to the surrounding area, cigarette hole burned in the toilet lino, a basin pulled from the wallto name a few. Our Committee of Governance is struggling with how best to handle this at the momentand yes we do get a bond and yes we are very thankful that to date no one has been hurt. Any thoughts?

16.01.2022 Saturday 3rd March saw beautiful weather for our annual Autumn Festival. The Bucking Bull and Jumping Castle kept the younger people occupied, while the market stalls had an interesting range of goods for sale. Food was plentiful with many lined up for the hamburgers, egg and bacon rolls and Devonshire teas to name a few. The live music was great, and many sat back to enjoy it in the shade of the George Bass Park. Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers who made this day possible

16.01.2022 If you’ve ever wondered what all the talk is about Zoom, this is something for you. Corinella and District Community Centre are running a great intro to Zoom. And you don’t have to go anywhere to attend. (Although they are providing a particularly delicious Devonshire Tea which can be collected from them. Sorry, it can’t be emailed).... Zoom is great for organising family get-togethers or any virtual meeting where a number of people are included. But hurryit’s on this Wednesday 21 October, 3:00-4:00. Drop them an email at [email protected] and check out the attached poster See more

16.01.2022 We'd love to hear from people with ideas on how they would like to see Bass Valley Community Centre utilised more. Are you or someone you know looking for a venue to hold classes perhaps? We have some great facilities here - the Bass Valley Hall, the kitchen with an adjacent room and our Activity Room that comes complete with a pool table. With the great facilities we have here it would be an ideal environment for Reiki, exercise classes, foreign language classes, Tai Chi, yoga, walking, bicycling, essential oils, camera/photography club, gardening, farming, singing/choir, health & nutrition, travel, craft, fishing etc or perhaps even cooking classes in our kitchen. The possibilities are endless.

15.01.2022 The nearby power poles are being replaced, and the power has been cut to the office. This means the office has no phones or computers for the day, so will be closed until tomorrow.

14.01.2022 Our Friendship Group has been very busy potting a variety of plants. Many of these sold at our Autumn Festival, but there are still bargains remaining. Grab them at the Hadden House Op Shop.

13.01.2022 Come along on Saturday to our Autumn Festival and try out the Bucking Bull. Buy a $10 wristband and get unlimited rides! How long can you stay on for? Suitable for all ages Photos courtesy of Davos Party Hire

13.01.2022 At the Bass Valley Community Centre we are VERY grateful to the Department of Corrections. Once a month they come and cut the lawns. And it’s not a ride-on mower job leaving wheel marks and skips. The team that turns up use push mowers that Corrections brings to the site. They do a great job.

13.01.2022 The Bass Valley Commu8nity Centre has had a big problem with possums in the roof. The major inconvenience is that the roof isn’t fitted with possum toilet. This means they have to relieve themselves in situ, ie into the room beneath them. What to do? Wellfirst, find out where they are accessing the roof

12.01.2022 Come on down to our Autumn Festival, even if it feels more like summer. Everyone is having a great time. Enjoy the live music, there's plenty to eat and drink. The kids are enjoying themselves with a $10 wristband that gives them unlimited use of the jumping castle, bucking bull (even safe for the littlies), giant slide, mini golf and face painting. Don't miss the reptile exhibit, it's very popular. Join in the line dancing.... Also very popular is our whisky spinning wheel.

12.01.2022 Don't forget our Karaoke night is on this Saturday the 19th October

11.01.2022 Recently, last week on Thursday, the Centre held its annual Volunteers’ BBQ. Each year the Committee of Governance, themselves volunteers, host a function for volunteers. The event is scheduled to occur in proximity to Volunteers Week, which is in May. It was great to have about twenty of our sixty volunteers able to attend. It may well be that next year, despite Volunteers Week being in May, we choose a warmer time of the year.... Thanks to those who attended and thanks to BBQ expert, Dave Martin, standing at the back of the photo. See more

11.01.2022 GENEALOGY The Bass Valley Community Centre holds genealogy sessions every Friday at the Centre from 12:30 to 2:30. If you would be interested in being supported to seek out your family’s origins come along. Jayne, the tutor, will be very happy to work with you.... It doesn’t matter if you are just starting out or have been doing it for years and are trying to track down some illusive relative. We have access to a number of resources that should either start you out or solve that puzzle. So please feel free to either just drop in or give us a ring on 5678 2277 to find out more. Cost is $8 a session or $5 for members.

11.01.2022 Grantville Fire The Bass Valley Community Centre is very happy that we were fortunate enough not to be impacted by the recent Grantville fires. Bass was very much in the danger zone as the fires raged. However, we were fortunate that the fires were restricted to the bush areas to the north thanks to the massive efforts of the fire authorities.... Some of our operations were affected. Scope were not able to attend their usual Tuesday cooking program for their clients. Some of our direct clients were evacuated and still are being impacted by the residual smoke. We aren't out of the fire danger season yet, so we are keeping our fingers crossed. We extend a huge thank you to all the CFA firefighters who have kept us safe.

10.01.2022 A Sign of the Times The Bass Valley Community Group Inc Annual General Meeting was held yesterday. In keeping with health and safety requirements around the Covid 19 restrictions, the meeting was held outside in the shade of our marque. Luckily it was beautiful weather. Attendees were appreciative of the brevity of the meeting (less than half an hour) but not so much of the lack of the usual array of refreshments afterwards. We very much thank those who attended, and also th...ose who stayed away to ensure we had limited numbers. Our Annual Report will be on our website soon.

10.01.2022 About once a month our Friendship Group will go on an outing. Recently our Wednesday group did a trip to the Mornington Peninsula, taking a ride on the new state of the art Eagle gondola. What a change from the old chairlift that was just a seat with a bar across.

10.01.2022 Some people may have noticed our item in the Waterline News inviting people from the community to our AGM (Annual General Meeting). Unfortunately, we had to change the date and couldn’t alert the paper in time to make the changes. However the good news is that the AGM for the Bass Valley Community Group Inc is now at 2:00 pm on Thursday 11 October 2018. We would love to see anyone who can make it turn up for it. Also we would love to hear from anyone who might be interested in joining our Committee of Governancegive us a ring on 5678 2277.

10.01.2022 Live Country Music Grab your picnic blanket or fold up chairs. Pack a picnic lunch or grab food at the festival because the Bass Valley great Autumn day out is on again! Dont forget the Esky or bar also available... MONSTER WHEEL AS WELL AS OUR MULTI SPIN WHISKY WHEEL WITH TOP SHELF WHISKY to be WON! 1 tix for $3 or 2 tix for $5 spins Yes, our popular low number count raffle wheel makes it easier to win prizes. $10 "play all day" tickets Mini Golf Jumping Castle Jumbo Slide [5 wide] Bucking Bronco Face Painting See the Snake Catcher display. 10.01.2022 A day out for the Friendship Group Last week the Monday Friendship Group set out for a day’s fishing at Inverloch. The bus was packed to the roof to include chairs, walkers, eskies etc.... Although there was a lot of fishing activity, no fish were harmed (ie caught). But the Group had a great time and the weather was wonderful. Sooooo if anyone knows someone, living in socially isolated circumstances, who would like to get out and about (picked up by our bus and taken home at the end of the day) just contact us on 5678 2277. The Group meets Monday and Wednesday at the Bass Valley Community Centre. Lunch is included. We are always on the look-out for new members. Roderick McIvor Centre Manager

09.01.2022 Election Day BBQ As always, the Bass Hall polling place comes alive on Election Day this Saturday. Come along and bring the kids. Hot snags straight off the barbie.

09.01.2022 It’s getting there.. The Seniors Outdoor Gym is starting to take shape. Installation was in full swing until we realised we had been sent the wrong fixings.... Not a big problem.a week or so later the right ones turned up. So we are well on the way to getting the equipment set up. With a bit of luck we should have it on the go by Christmasthis one.

08.01.2022 We had our annual end-of-year Christmas Lunch on Monday 16th December. We hosted 50-60 clients and volunteers in the Bass Hall. A traditional dinner of chicken, pork and ham with scalloped potatoes and coleslaw was served. This was followed by plum pudding or pav served with custard, cream and fruit.... The hard work was done by the BVCG Committee of Governance members. Particular credit needs to go to Vince (President of the BVCG) and Cherie Allen for yet again pulling the event together. Vince cooked all the meats and Cherie decorated the tables and did the deserts. A great job that will deserve a good rest: The office will be closed from Friday 22nd December and will reopen on Monday 6th January Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone from the BVCG.

08.01.2022 Another of our classes is our Friday Computer Club. We often hear people say Oh noI don’t do computers. The Friday Computer Club here at the Bass Valley Community Centre caters to everyone at every level of computer knowledge, or total lack thereof. It really does. The group is led by computer professional Gordon Chase. It caters to everyone who has any need or interest in computers. And it is difficult to lead a full life these days without using computers. People will ...say they don’t use computers and then use their mobile phone. Any mobile phone is a much more powerful computer than all the computer power used to put people on the Moon. Gordon is very happy to show people how to get more out of their phone and if you don’t have a computer to bring along we can lend you one for the session. The Friday Computer Club is on 10:00am to 12: pm every Friday morning at the Centre in Bass. Give us a ring on 5678 2277 or just turn up. $8 a session or $5 for members. See more

08.01.2022 The Bass Valley Community Centre’s Friendship Club recently ventured out on an excursion to the Frankston Sand Sculptures. The group goes on an excursion once a month and the exhibition of sand sculptures at Frankston was a perfect opportunity. The day was perfect being sunny but not too hot. The group was very impressed by the sand sculptures which are produced by practitioners from around the world. If you would like to join the group and get out and about, we can pick you... up from where you live and deliver you home after the program. We run it on Mondays and Wednesdays. We cater for older persons (over 65) or younger persons living with disabilities. So if you would like join our group and get to know a new group of people, give is a ring at the Centre on 5678 2277. 08.01.2022 The COVID 19 epidemic is a gathering crisis. As such the Bass Valley Community Centre plans to respond to it in stages. Our first action has been to cut back the social interaction of our Op Shop by having only morning trade. Our groups such as the Computer Club will continue operating pending further notice. Our Social Support groups (Monday and Wednesday) will also continue for the time being.... Our Tuesday shopping bus will continue. We will come back with more information as things develop. See more

07.01.2022 The Bass Valley Community Centre will be having a bit of a break over the festive season. Our office will be closed on Friday 21 December and will reopen on Monday 7 January. The last run of the Community Bus will be Friday 21 December and will resume Tuesday 8 January. The Op Shop is closed from Saturday December 22 and will open again Monday January 7. 05.01.2022 The November Waterline News is out now. You can read it online at www.waterlinenews.com.au And if you go to page 4 you can read all about our computer club. Not really a club, more of a computer course. And not really a course, more of a helpdesk.... And one that really does help. So if you have any computer questions come along. Tuesdays, from 1:00 to 3:00. $8 or $5 for BVCG members. All very welcome. Please note that the advertised phone number listed in the article is incorrect. The correct one for us is 5678 2277.

05.01.2022 We are hoping to find a kid's face painter for our festival on Saturday. If you could help out, or know someone who could, please contact Jayne at the Centre on 5678 2277

04.01.2022 In accord with the Commonwealth Government’s coronavirus Stage 2 shut down guidelines, the Bass Valley Community Centre is now shut. Our programmes are cancelled for (at this stage) the next four weeks. This includes our clubs such as the Computer and Genealogy. Our shopping bus will not be making its Tuesday runs. The Bass Hall will not be available during this time.... Staff are working from home. Our phone is still operating Mon-Thur 9:00-3:30. So if you have a query we might be able to help with give us a ring on 5678 2277. 02.01.2022 The cupboard was bare. Well not exactlybut the Hadden House Op Shop is beginning to look a lot less full than it was. As we move between seasons it must be time for that clean out where you find old clothes and furniture you don’t need any more. Please think of us at the op shop as you do. Unfortunately we can’t make collections but we are very happy to receive deliveries of all your unwanted goods at 2-4 Bass School Road Bass.... We would very much appreciate it if what you can donate to us are ‘goods’. We spend a lot on taking soiled and damaged items left with us to the tip. And we can’t sell electrical goods. We would very much welcome your donations to support our programmes supporting older persons in the community. Thanking you in anticipation. See more

01.01.2022 The Bass Valley Community Centre has a new piece of infrastructure. Thanks to the Bass Coast Shire Council’s Community Grants program we now have a marque: The marque measures 6mX3m and has back and side flaps for added protection from the weather.
