25.01.2022 Aerosols & Polysyrene Drop Off Coming To Bassendean Soon The EMRC has been successful in securing a WA Government Waste Sorted Grant to set up new drop off points for expanded polystyrene and aerosols in Bassendean, and each of their member councils. Many residents are frustrated by the lack of disposal options for these products. They are labelled ‘The Troublesome Two’ because of difficulties in their safe and convenient disposal. This results in them being landfilled or pl...aced incorrectly in kerbside recycling bins. EMRC CEO Marcus Geisler said: ‘People in Perth’s Eastern Region are currently asked to take aerosols to a household hazardous waste drop-off point at the EMRC’s Red Hill Waste Management Facility. However, this option is determined as unsatisfactory because of the considerable distance between Red Hill and most suburbs in Perth’s Eastern Region. ‘Only 3% of the 9,000 tonnes of expanded polystyrene generated in Western Australia annually is recycled. 30% is landfilled where it persists for hundreds of years, and because it is very lightweight but bulky, it takes up valuable space in landfill cells. This is great news for Bassendean and the EMRC’s other member councils. More local drop-off points will benefit residents and the environment at the same time.’ For more info: https://www.emrc.org.au//wastesorted-grants-provide-we/179

24.01.2022 As the pandemic continues around the world, the threat of a COVID-19 outbreak in Western Australia is something that we need to be prepared for. Even if it's un...likely, it's vital that we have the protections in place that we need for the worst case scenario. So, in line with health advice, from 5 December, particular WA venues and businesses will be required to maintain mandatory contact registers to support COVID-19 contact tracing. These records will ONLY be used for the purpose of contact tracing, should it be required, and will only be kept for 28 days. Businesses or venues required to keep a contact register include: Food and licenced venues (restaurants, cafés, bars, pubs, taverns, nightclubs) Gyms, indoor sporting centres and pools Places of worship and funeral parlours Beauty and personal care services including hairdressers and barbers Galleries and museums Cinemas, theatres and other entertainment venues Auction houses and real estate inspections Community facilities, libraries and halls Zoos and amusement parks Function centres Accommodation facilities that already have check-in arrangements in place (i.e. hostels, hotels, large camp grounds) The details required for the contact register will include the date, arrival time, names and telephone numbers. Any person aged 16 years and over who attends a business, place or premises, listed above, including patrons, staff, volunteers and contractors will be required to register their contact details. Records are not required to be collected for people collecting takeaway or children under 16 years. To help make checking in to venues as easy as possible and reduce the burden on businesses, we've released a free app, SafeWA. SafeWA is a digital COVID-19 contact register system, which uses unique QR codes for venues that patrons can scan to register their attendance. You can get the app now on Android or iPhone at https://safewa.health.wa.gov.au The app is a free, easy, contactless solution, but it is not mandatory. Alternative formats for contact registers are available, including other electronic tools or a paper-based system, depending on what is suitable for the business, venue or individual. This step to reintroduce contact registers was considered in consultation with industry and business to establish a long term strategy to keep our State safe, given the ongoing impact of the virus internationally. More information on contact registers and the SafeWA app can be found at www.wa.gov.au/safewa We've done so well as a State - and we've achieved so much by following the advice and working together. Contact registers might not always be convenient, but we know that in the event of an outbreak they would make a huge difference. Together, by following these guidelines staying vigilant, we can keep WA safe and strong.

Above all, just start! The quote "It's the starting that stops most people", is very true! Mental Health Week WA

16.01.2022 New gifts at Christmas often mean that households go through a lot of batteries It is estimated that WA throws away over 18 million household batteries to landfill every year Why not consider some alternatives to disposable batteries this Christmas? Gift rechargeable batteries and rechargers. Give gifts that don’t need batteries. Use mains power and solar where possible.... Batteries are a Household Hazardous Waste and one of the Town Of Bassendean’s waste reduction initiatives is being part of the EMRC’s 'Dry Cell Battery Collection Program' If you do have batteries to dispose of after Christmas, be sure to drop them at collection points located at the Town’s Customer Service Centre, the Bassendean Memorial Library, or the Wasteless Pantry www.rgang.org.au/r-o/emrc-s-battery-collection-program.aspx

16.01.2022 It’s pedalling towards the finish line! The Whitfield Safe Active Street is nearing completion with final line markings going down. Now local residents will have access to a ‘bike and pedestrian first’ corridor linking the Town Centre with Sandy Beach Reserve. Studies showed that more people would cycle around their local area if they were provided a safer environment. Whitfield St now provides that by reducing vehicle traffic to 30km/h, so dust off that old mountain bike... for summer! The Town was fortunate enough to secure funding for the project from the Department of Transport, and we’re looking forward ‘activating’ the corridor through various initiatives over the coming months. With the construction works of Whitfield Safe Active Street are now complete, the line marking and signage associated with the project is currently being installed by Main Roads WA. As part of the project, there are two intersections in which the priority for vehicles will be reversed to allow continuous access along Whitfield Street for all users of the road. New give way control lines have recently been installed along Palmerston Street at the Whitfield Street intersection along with temporary give way signs (until the permanent signs are installed by Main Roads contractors). The stop controls on Whitfield Street have also been removed. The Town has also installed variable message boards along Palmerston Street to notify road users of the change and advising them to give way at this intersection. Later in the week, the intersection at Reid Street and Whitfield Street will also undergo the same change of priority. New give way controls will be installed on Reid Street on the approach to this intersection and the removal of the stop controls on Whitfield Street. Variable message boards will be installed to notify road users of the change. At the completion of the linemarking and signage works, Whitfield Street will be fully functioning as a Safe Active Street with a 30km/hr speed limit to promote the use of alternative modes of transport (ie bikes, mobility scooters etc.).

14.01.2022 Wear white this Friday 11 September to support Bravehearts White Balloon Day 2020 and raise awareness for the prevention of child sexual assault and exploitation. Mayor Renee McLennan said as a mother of two children, it pains her to know that 1 in 5 children are sexually harmed in some way before their 18th birthday. Please join me in sparing a thought for these children. Protecting our precious kids is everyones job. Whether youre a parent or not, we all have a role to ...play in protecting our community's children from harm. Supporting White Balloon Day is one way we can help raise awareness and funds for the prevention of child sexual assault and exploitation. Here are some tips: Check out different sites and games yourself because this will help you talk to your children. Check privacy settings and age restrictions. Ask your children about their concerns, what they think are the risks and how they can stay safe. Teach your children to consider how much they share online and whether new "friends" are real or not. Let them know they can talk to you or another adult they can trust.
