24.01.2022 Dept of Transport proposal to allow jet skis into the Upper Reaches of our Swan River? What do you think? Leave a quick comment on the attached link. Community consultation ending soon on 13 November. https://www.mysaytransport.wa.gov.au/swan-river-upper-reach While the survey questions are posed as an innocuous "let's share the water with Jet Skis", undoubtedly there would be significant impacts on our river foreshore, our wildlife and the passive recreational and non-motorised use of our river i.e. sailing, paddling, kayaking, rowing, fishing, walking etc. I urge you to complete the simple survey and make a few comments or email a submission to [email protected] Attached is a letter to the editor of the Eastern Reporter on this very topic ...

21.01.2022 So disappointing that a local school, would set such a poor environmental example with the unnecessary destruction of a significant number of carpark trees... Location: Good Shepherd Catholic School Lockeridge Residents were advised that these works were scheduled to occur during the school holidays, but in response to a growing number of people petitioning for retention of these trees, the school administration brought in contractors early this morning to facilitate speedy removal. No consideration given to relocating these trees elsewhere. Very poor approach indeed.

21.01.2022 Rat baits often causes secondary poisoning in rodent predators. Please consider using non-poison control methods. There are many alternative humane options for controlling rats that also saves wildlife from secondary poisoning.

20.01.2022 Such great work being done by many volunteer groups around the Town to improve our precious natural spaces. Saturday the folks from Bassendean Preservation Group planted out areas to help stabilise sections of riverbank. This morning Friends Of Bindaring Wetland Bassendean are out there hand weeding at Bindaring to improve native growth. So many good people lending a helping hand is truely wonderful.

11.01.2022 From Bob Brown ... As some will know, Ashfield Community Action Network Ashfieldcan , have embarked on a project to develop a small ‘Pocket’ park and lookout on vacant land adjacent to the intersection of Villiers Street and Hardy Road on the Bassendean/Ashfield border. This small block of land, historically a dumping ground for building rubble and other inert material, has commanding views over Ashfield Flats wetland, the river valley, the airport and beyond to the Darlin...g Escarpment. It really is a hidden gem. Partnered in the project is the Town of Bassendean, The WA Planning Commission and our Local Member Dave Kelly, who has provided funding for aspects of the project. Community consultation has taken place with positive outcomes and concerns of contamination have been largely overcome. The park will be a quiet place of contemplation and peace, linking people to the wetland as it transforms over decades to come. The concept will incorporate low maintenance, low-lying native flowering shrubs, a feature seating area and local artworks. Also, of importance will be a feature detailing our first people’s connection with Ashfield Flats wetland. What form this takes is yet to be determined but will be achieved in consultation with our Whadjuk people. Once a meandering, low impact pathway is established, a detail being progressed by the Town in consultation with the WAPC, expressions of interest will be sought from local artisans to construct the seating feature (concept drawings have been included) and suggest appropriate artistic inclusions, showcasing local artistic talent. Significant preparatory works in revegetating and stabilizing the steep embankments have already been successfully undertaken by volunteers from the Bassendean Preservation Group and the WAPC. It is envisaged that those visiting the park will include it as a stop-over during their visit to the Ashfield Flats, walking up a pathway along an existing drain that, hopefully, will become a living stream. Alternatively, people may include it as a destination whilst walking around our beautiful Town, accessing off Hardy Road. For those interested, updates on progress can be viewed on the AshfieldCAN Facebook page. And further, should people wish to volunteer in establishing the park, please consider becoming a member of AshfieldCAN or simply turn up with gloves and a hat when we schedule preparation and planting days. Tonight is our AGM, held at the Ashfield Sports Club on Colstoun Road, commencing at 7pm. All are welcome. See more

11.01.2022 The Town of Bassendean is partnering with Ashfieldcan to transform the vacant land at the junction of Hardy Rd, Villiers Street West and Kenny Street into a con...templative lookout over the magnificent Ashfield Flats. Funding support for the project has been provided by Dave Kelly MP. Its wonderful that this project is progressing and that over the coming year we can together make this site a space for everyone to enjoy the natural beauty of our area. See more

09.01.2022 Our beautiful river is home to darters. Their natural habit of diving for food from logs and branches makes darters susceptible to entanglement in discarded fishing line. Unless rescued by volunteers, fishing line entanglements of birds often leads to slow agonising demise from starvation. In your travels please do pick up any discarded fishing line and hooks that are such a danger to these and other birds. Thank you.

07.01.2022 Last night Council adopted its 2020/21 Budget. Recognising that this year has been challenging for many due to the effects of COVID-19, Council decided there w...ould be no increase in total rates revenue and a freeze on fees and charges. Tough choices were required to prioritise the projects and services most likely to deliver the greatest benefit to our community and facilitate recovery from COVID-19. In addition to the usual services and facilities that our community needs and values, some key projects that we have budgeted for in 2020/21 include: Mary Crescent "Our Park Our Place" restoration project Sandy Beach Nature Playground construction Sandy Beach toilet upgrade Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) bins rolled out Additional 1,000 new street trees next winter Palmerston Reserve upgrade Padbury Reserve playground upgrade Success Hill spillway construction Town Centre master plan & revitalisation Underground Power for parts of Eden Hill/Bassendean, Strategic river assessment Restoration works northern section Bindaring Wetlands Green trail along principal shared path Jubilee Reserve master plan Renewal of signage, various park benches & BBQs Various road and footpath projects Funding for Bassendean Preservation Group nursery Old Perth Road Markets to recommene in August Second Avenue to Fourth Avenue living stream design Although Council will only generate the same in total rates revenue as last year, there will be some variation on individual rates notices as a result of the State Governments GRV revaluations. Consequently its estimated that about 2/3 of our residential property owners will have a small decrease in their rates while others will see a relative increase. 03.01.2022 We are introducing a new better practice three bin system and are providing some choice in the bin configuration to accommodate your individual circumstances. H...ere is the information you need to make the decision for your household. With the introduction of the third bin much of what currently goes into your general waste bin will now go into the new FOGO* bin, cutting our general waste by more than half. The standard size for the general waste bin will be reduced but your overall bin capacity will be increased by 140L per fortnight; this configuration will be more than adequate for the majority of households. The cost of the standard bin configuration is covered by the regular waste charge but electing to have a larger bin incurs an additional fee to cover the associated costs. If you still decide that you want to "opt-out" of the standard bin configuration with a smaller general waste bin and instead retain your larger 240L general waste bin you need to let us know using the "opt-out" postcard sent to all property owners this week or by following the link below. If you have any concerns or questions please get in touch with the Towns waste staff on 9377 8000 and theyll be happy to assist and provide advice. https://www.yoursay.bassendean.wa.gov.au/opt-out-bin *Food Organics & Garden Organics
