14.01.2022 ***Start your week off with a book recommendation from our in-house resident book reviewer - One Womans Brief Book Reviews*** Saving You by Charlotte Nash. (2019). Australian Author -- Contemporary ... Synopsis: Three escaped pensioners. One single mother. A road trip to rescue her son. Mallory and her son Harry are a little family unit after Harrys dad Duncan left them to work in New York. But then Duncan fails to return Harry after a visit so Mallory gets on a plane. At the airport in America she runs into three escaped retirees and ends up on a road trip with them. Zadie, Ernie and Jock have their own reasons for their journey. The four will discover the lengths theyll go to save each other and themselves. Review: Yes, yes, yes; so much yes to this book. I enjoyed a previous book by this author but this new novel is on a whole other level. Within the first couple of chapters I was internally raging at the audacity of Duncans actions. This book is quite an emotional ride and definitely pulled at the heartstrings. Mallory is an extremely likeable lead character and the three pensioners all give their own intriguing touches to the storyline, as well as having their own stories. We later meet AJ who was just amazing really AJ is one of those characters you develop a crush on despite the fact that he is a made up character in a book haha. I cant recommend this beautiful book more, and I hope one day someone considers making a movie out of this touching novel.

13.01.2022 Did you know this piece of Bassendean history? In the early 1900s there were many farms and small dairies in this area. Then in the early 1920s an infectious disease called Rinderpest decimated the dairies and almost 300 cattle in Bassendean alone had to be destroyed. #bassendeanlibrary #bassendeanmemoriallibrary #localhistory #bassendeanhistory #localstudiescollection #dairyfarm #rinderpest #librariesofinstagram #librarygram

13.01.2022 This morning, Thursday, September 17th, we lost Terry Goodkind. It is a great loss. An unimaginable loss. It is impossible to put into few words just how amazin...g of a man, a husband, a writer, a friend, and a human, Terry Goodkind truly was. He is already desperately missed. We are forever grateful for him having shared his lifes work with all of us, as he was always grateful to be held in our hearts. To exist in this vast universe for a speck of time is the great gift of life. It is our only life. The universe will go on, indifferent to our brief existence, but while we are here, we touch not just part of that vastness, but also the lives around us. Life is the gift each of us has been given. Each life is our own and no one elses. It is precious beyond all counting. It is the greatest value we can have. Cherish it for what it truly is . . . Your life is yours alone. Rise up and live it. - Terry Goodkind We love you, Terry.

03.01.2022 Another Phonic Reading Series from Bassendean Memorial Library Dandelion Launchers "THERES NO SUCH THING AS A KID WHO HATES READING. THERE ARE KIDS WHO LOVE READING, AND KIDS WHO ARE READING THE WRONG BOOK." James Patterson... A phonic series for beginner readers. Aimed at children aged 4-7, each book introduces only a few letter/sounds at a time allowing independent reading from the outset. Four books in each unit provide practice whilst offering different stories. Each unit introduces new letters/sounds while revising previously taught phonic letters/sounds and high-frequency or sight words. How can I get them out? The Dandelion Launcher series is most effective when each level is taken out as one loan. Each level will be placed behind our library counter in closed bags, and their corresponding laminated sheet will be placed in the childrens area. Please bring the sheet to the counter, and we will exchange it for the series bag. Each series has 4 small books that take the new reader through each phonetic sound, allowing them to slowly join sounds together and make words. We recommend that you begin at level one and work your way through the series.
