25.01.2022 Bassett Street Reserve is getting more trees! The next phase is the continuation of the kerbside improvement Grant that the community group were awarded, with tree plantings throughout the roadside reserve and the continuation of the plantings. Hopefully we can get plenty of helpers and will be doing it in a Covid-safe way. Working bee on Thurs Fri the 18/19th June to do preparation work, then planting trees and plants the weekend of 20/21st June. Hopefully if the weather is nice we can have a bit of a catchup and BBQ at the shelter, maybe a coming out of Covid celebration! Get in touch if you would like to put your name on the volunteer list!

24.01.2022 This Winter, two residents (Ian Brunning and Evette Sunset) ran a survey (see Facebook and/or Bassett Reserve website) about our neighbourhood reserve, and collated that information into a landscape plan proposal for Council to consider. Leanne Lawrence, our internal council liaison person, advocated for us and full approval has very recently come back, with immediate follow up action and support - boulders placed to naturalise the creek bed, mending of the eroded paths, plan...ting of 300 indigenous reeds and shrubs by the local young peoples group YACCA, and holes dug for trees supplied by the Council nursery. This quick response is very exciting. The Project is run and contributed to by the neighbourhood community (with help from the YACCA group) with no fixed timeline. 24.01.2022 A big thanks to Kim and the Council for digging the 40-odd holes ready for planting next Easter weekend. After digging out, the guys backfilled the soil, mixing in some gypsum as they went. Each hole now has a stake labelled with the name of the intended tree.... Next week we will need to dig some soil back out, water, and then plant the trees! We will really need lots of help to get this done so please share this post, Like it and all the other Facebook things you can do! We will have a BBQ afterwards so it should be a really fun family event, please spread the word!

24.01.2022 The weather is starting to warm up - would anyone like to volunteer to look after the weekly watering of a tree? We have 4 left in the playground that dont have anyone to water them yet...

23.01.2022 Evette and Leanne have been slaving away on the laptop putting together a Grant Application to the City of Onkaparinga Council. The application is most probably the best way to get up to speed on what is going to be happening (hopefully!) over the next 6 months, so download a copy and get reading! 21.01.2022 Just a short post to say thanks to all the volunteers who helped out with tree planting this weekend, what an amazing difference its made already! We have had several more tree sponsors which was fantastic. If you would like to sponsor a tree or know someone who might like to, please get in touch. We also have a website if you know someone who doesnt use Facebook please let them know or get in touch and we can add emails to our mailing list. 20.01.2022 What is happening along Bassett St? You may have noticed a lot of changes happening around the Bassett Street Reserve and more recently along the verges of Bassett St itself over the last few weeks. Bassett Street residents were successful in winning a $5000 Grant from Onkaparinga Council for the purpose of improving the roadside verge with more trees and native plantings, and the time has almost arrived when it will suddenly start to take shape over the space of a week! Keep...Continue reading

19.01.2022 Hope everyone had a great Christmas, the new trees are all looking very healthy so well done to the watering volunteers! We have had plenty of the new trees adopted as well as donations which has raised some funds for the next part of the improvements, which is looking likely to be the mini pocket forest of rare/showy/interesting Eucalyptus, more on this project another time.... There is a big crop of fresh weeds down at the far (Western) end of the creek where it disappears... into the big drainage pipe. The weeds hand pull very easily as the ground there is soft, so it would be great if anyone can lend a hand to do a quick hour of weeding in that area to keep the weeds down around the new plantings that the YACCA Group planted out over winter. It was also suggested that we could try some 2L plastic bottle watering devices to try and save some of the new creek plantings on the higher ground East of the footbridge. The soil is hard clay so these plantings may well not survive the summer unless we can get some water to them. The photos give a bit of an example of the water bottle drippers, but for now if anyone is keen to do a bit of weeding then cook something up on the BBQ for tea afterwards/discuss possible designs for the dripper bottles, just turn up down at the creek 4pm this Sat 12th.

18.01.2022 If anyone has an hour spare over the weekend, we still have a bit of work left to finish the latest tree planting off. Wheelbarrowing the mulch around the new trees and finishing off the irrigation trench are the two main jobs...

18.01.2022 Exciting times! There is a meeting tomorrow morning (9am) on the Reserve with Council to discuss the location/timelines for the planting of the pocket forest and fig semi-circle. See photos, the circle and approx tree locations were marked out this evening... Stay tuned for more...

18.01.2022 Only a few days to go till the tree planting begins - the 3 test plantings already make a difference! Mulch deliveries have started arriving, please spread the word as we will need lots of help this Sat and Monday and then for a week or so afterwards spreading mulch and watering. Plenty of new trees are available for adoption, if you are interested in adopting a tree please get in touch...

16.01.2022 What a stormy day for tree planting, but well done to Evette, Leanne and Andy (Council liasion officer and volunteer) Ian, Janet and Emily for getting the job done! Photo shows Leanne, Evette, Andy and Site Foreman Louis, and Site Foreman inspecting worker and hole for correctness!

16.01.2022 There is a bit of a working bee happening in the Reserve this morning, if you have an hour to spare drop over and spread a bit of mulch around - its better that a gym session!

15.01.2022 By the way - if anyone would like to know more about the project, or to be more closely involved and help out behind the scenes, we would love to hear from you! Phone 0406 498 232 (Ian) or email [email protected]

15.01.2022 Great short video from the Council, look out for one of our neighbours and one of our YACCA leaders!

12.01.2022 Stuck for ideas for Mothers Day? Heres a last-minute idea to win you some a Brownie points...take Mum over to Bassett St Reserve, give her a wheelbarrow and a fork (one at #21 to borrow or Evettes) and spend some quality time with your Mum out in the fresh air, shifting mulch from the big pile and spreading it around the horseshoe or the new trees - she will love you for it!

05.01.2022 Thanks to https://www.facebook.com/McLarenValeIrrigation/ for supporting Bassett Street Reserve (couple of bug caps for our irrigation in case you are wondering what youve done!)

04.01.2022 Check out some amazing photos from the planting session on Saturday. Thanks to Jared from @jaredstrapp.photography for taking the photos - Jared has offered to come back once the trees are all mulched in and established for some after shots.

03.01.2022 Half the mulch pile has been shifted today, great work and who said young children couldnt do hard labour when required?!!

03.01.2022 Lots of trees and border natives have been planted despite the rain, lots still to go! Planting continues tomorrow, holes already dug so easy work! All help gratefully accepted!

03.01.2022 If you would like to do any tree planting at other time please give Evette a buzz on 0413 628 546 and she will be happy to get you organised!

02.01.2022 The tree and verge planting went fantastically last week despite the intermittent rain - and the volunteers were fed like Kings (and Queens) thanks to a generous neighbour and kids! We cant promise the same sort of feasting this weekend but there will be more planting happening, so if you have an hour or two to spare come down and lend a hand. The holes are already dug so theres no heavy work, and we have tools to use as well. Gardening gloves would be handy and something to kneel on. Message Evette on 0413 628 546 with a rough time so we know to expect you..

02.01.2022 A great time was had by all at the BBQ on 23rd December. For anyone that couldnt make it - there will be more! Just a reminder that if you would like to be kept informed about events and progress in the Reserve, please add your name to the email list - send your details to: [email protected]
