22.01.2022 DSM debates. Some of you would have heard in recent press reports about the international diagnostic system used in psychological and psychiatric practice. What is there to debate? And how much does it all matter? Here are a few points to explain The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual is a book written by committees of mental health professionals. It is not very international because it is published by the American Psychiatric Association, although they do invite profess...ionals from around the world to contribute (like Prof Richard Bryant, UNSW, world expert on PTSD). They are now up to Version 5 published May 2013. Each new edition has some changes to the way disorders are diagnosed. This edition has a few minor changes to the exact definitions of some disorders. But it is the more significant changes to the way certain disorders are conceptualised that is attracting the most heated debate. In particular, emphasis is placed on biology and genetics. The last 10 years has seen burgeoning research into the neurobiology underlying most psychological disorders. This not only guides biological treatments, like medication, but it also helps the professional community to work out which disorders are alike and different. Detractors argue that many regular emotional experiences are being turned into disorders, like bereavement or 'adjustment disorder'. We must recall that this is just a bi-product of the American health system, in which all people must have health cover to receive treatment and the insurers won't cover treatment unless you have been given a diagnosis with a name and a code. So, we can say that DSM is both a medical diagnostic text and a social text.

10.01.2022 Cool fact: The unconscious It is not just Freud; plenty of modern psychologists accept that a lot more then we ever realise goes on in our unconscious mind out of our own awareness. What we decide to wear in the morning, bigger choices we make in life, how we modulate our speech with certain people, the anxieties and sensitivities that we harbour they are all driven by the sub-conscious mental processes. But dont be scared your brain is really very good at looking after you and can make loads of decisions without you realising.

05.01.2022 Cool fact: History Psychology was not even a word until about 120 years ago. Psyche is the Greek for mind. Around the 1890s (when Australia was preparing for Federation) a few European physicians trained in neurology were starting to try to understand emotional afflictions and treat them. They explored what the mind was and what can go wrong with it. Pierre Janet in France and Sigmund Freud in Austria (later in England) were among this early group. In the meanwhile, a few philosophers were becoming preoccupied with what it meant by concepts such as the mind, a self, memory, and consciousness. The most important and influential was the American William James, who is now regarded as the first psychologist.
