24.01.2022 The Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill has reached a critical stage in parliament. Sarah Lovell MLC & I outline in today’s The Mercury Newspaper that we can no longer fail terminally ill patients who do not find answers in current and contemporary care: LEGISLATION to permit voluntary assisted dying is very much in the public focus, not only here in Tasmania but across the ditch in New Zealand. ...Continue reading

22.01.2022 The time has come to legislate voluntary assisted dying in Tasmania. That’s exactly what Sarah Lovell MLC & I are arguing for in today’s The Examiner Newspaper, Launceston: Tasmania’s Legislative Council will finally debate the much anticipated private members bill on voluntary assisted dying. Conceived by the Member for Mersey Mike Gaffney, the bill represents substantial work which has been endorsed by many community organisations, including the Tasmanian chapter of Dying...Continue reading

17.01.2022 I am currently sponsoring an e-petition on behalf of the wonderful residents of Garden Island Creek, who are concerned about coastal erosion in their area. If you live in this community or enjoy visiting Garden Island Sands beach on days with weather like we've been experiencing recently, please consider showing your support.
17.01.2022 To the people of Huon thank you. I won’t let you down.

16.01.2022 The Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill finally passed the Legislative Council today - unanimously! The historic vote just shows what our Upper House of Parliament is really capable of. Sarah Lovell MLC’s & my comments were just published in The Mercury Newspaper: ... The bill to allow voluntary assisted dying in Tasmania has finally passed the Legislative Council today. Introduced by the Honourable Mike Gaffney MLC in August this year, the End of Life Choices (Voluntary Assisted Dying) Bill 2020 has been subject to rigorous scrutiny, refinements and pragmatic amendments over the last months. The debate was characterised by civility, decency, respect and genuine engagement on the matter. Every member of the Legislative Council ensured that the concerns of their constituents were heard and considered. Briefings by community groups and health organisations were thorough and extensive. Parliamentary staff ensured that sufficient resources were available to all members of the Legislative Council to discharge their duties as political decision makers and legislators. We could not ask for more. The relevance of the Legislative Council has been questioned in the media by public commentators over the years. Some argued that the upper house should be abolished altogether. Others argued that members of the Legislative Council should always be ‘independent’, and never members of any political party. Some suggested that the Legislative Council should focus on reviewing legislation passed in the House of Assembly, rather than introducing legislation in its own right. Cleary, the debate on the voluntary assisted dying legislation indicated how relevant the Legislative Council is. It is an integral and essential institution of the Tasmanian parliament. It is also very different in temperament, tone and tempo from the House of Assembly. This is a fundamental, yet often underappreciated point of difference that enhances diversity in the parliamentary decision making process. It enhances the legislative process. Less bickering, more reasoning: that’s how legislation is meant to be introduced, debated and amended. The Tasmanian community has recognised and appreciated that approach in the Legislative Council. The standard has been set. It is our expectation that the voluntary assisted dying bill is now introduced in the House of Assembly without further delay. Everything that can be said with regards to eligibility, safeguards and oversight has been said in our extensive debate over the last weeks. There is no need now for inappropriate politicking, grandstanding or filibustering. Tasmanians expect this bill to pass and they rightly expect for the legislation to be implemented. Anything else would fail terminally ill patients who experience undue suffering and misery. As parliamentarians we just can’t allow to fail them any longer. https://www.themercury.com.au/subscribe/news/1/

15.01.2022 Thank you Huon. With more than 5,000 votes still to be counted there won’t be a result tonight, but things are looking very positive. Regardless of what happens, tonight I want to thank every single person in Huon for your support and for your kindness.... Thank you to all of my volunteers and supporters - our campaign has been so positive, despite the challenges of a global pandemic. Our campaign spoke to thousands of people. It’s clear the people of Blackmans Bay, the Channel and the Huon Valley want a local representative who will work hard everyday for more jobs, better services, road upgrades and to build a fairer Tasmania. My commitment is that I will never take the Huon for granted.

08.01.2022 The State Budget has failed the Huon Valley - again. No investment in jobs, health or ambulance services. No upgrades to the Huonville Highschool either. It’s a real shame and a missed opportunity to put our region back on the map after last year’s devastating bushfires.... Thank you to Huon News for publishing my OpEd today. So much more work needs to be done!
08.01.2022 We are more than halfway through ‘Movember’ Yes, Josh Willie MLC & I are looking a bit silly with our moustaches, but we are raising awareness and funds for a good cause. ... Thank you so much to The Mercury Newspaper for the article today!
07.01.2022 On Tuesday 22 September, I delivered remarks in support of the 'End of Life Choices (Voluntary Assisted Dying)' Bill in the Legislative Council. It is my firm view that prolonging death is not the same as extending life. Any legislation that passes the Tasmanian parliament will only ever serve to permit - not mandate - assisted dying. It is what our communities expect and it is what we, as elected representatives, should deliver.
07.01.2022 Out doorknocking in sunny Snug this morning with my great friends and the fabulous Julie Collins MP & Alison Standen MP. Many residents have already voted (). Not long to go!!!
03.01.2022 First sitting day of the Legislative Council today, and I was officially sworn in as the new Member for Huon It’s such and honour to represent the Huon Valley, Blackmans Bay, the Channel & Bruny Island in Tasmania’s upper house. 03.01.2022 On Wednesday 28 October I spoke with Aaron Stevens of Tasmania Talks about the voluntary assisted dying Bill that's currently before the Legislative Council. My Upper House colleagues & I have conducted this debate with decency and respect for difference of opinion. The community's support for this legislation is clear and we cannot let them down on what is now the 4th attempt in a decade to get this done. Let me be clear - voluntary assisted dying is, and will only ever be, for terminally ill patients. The safeguards and oversights have been strengthened through committee. The Bill that passes the Legislative Council is one the Lower House should be able to immediately take up & vote upon.
02.01.2022 The proposal of a multimillion dollar upgrade of Jefferys Track just does not make any sense. I spoke about this in parliament on Tuesday 27 October and tabled a comprehensive submission by a constituent of mine, Jenny Cambers-Smith. At their meeting last night - Wednesday 25 November - the Huon Valley Council unanimously supported a common sense alternative: no further upgrade of Jefferys Track beyond a fire trail.
01.01.2022 We’re off voting
