22.01.2022 How to make your next adventure the best ever!!!

21.01.2022 LONG WAITS FOR SMALL WINS! NATURE CAN'T WAIT NPAQ is encouraged by this new acquisition for Queensland's protected area estate and congratulates the state gove...rnment for these strategic additions. Let's hope this begins a long-awaited path (after a long hiatus) to a Queensland target of 17% of protected areas, originally intended by the Convention on Biological Diversity to be reached by 2020. Currently we are at 8.4%, still way behind other states. We anxiously await the urgently needed, fully funded QLD Protected Area Strategy. This announcement means nature has a win. However, our biodiversity, unique landscapes and climate action cannot afford to wait for another election year for significant additions to national park estate and management funding to be actioned. 18.01.2022 Restrictions ease for recreational activities, just in time for the long-weekend! The questions on everyone’s lips - what does this mean and what are we allowe...d to do? Come Saturday 2 May 2020, Queenslanders can once again enjoy the great outdoors for recreation purposes, as long as they stay within a 50km radius from their home. Moreton Bay Region wants you to take advantage of the easing restrictions (while also following the rules) by jumping in your car (or boat) and making your way to some of South East Queensland’s best hinterland and coastal experiences, all within 50km from Brisbane. Enjoy the best of the region’s natural attractions including bushwalking tracks, beaches, 4WDing, national parks, lookouts and Moreton Bay’s marine park. Picnics are also allowed under the new restrictions, so why not try the best of the region’s fish and chips or support one of the many local businesses that are now offering delicious takeaway options. To help plan your weekend of recreation-fun, Visit Moreton Bay Region has launched a brand new search function that provides you with a personalised list of recreational spaces within a 50km radius of your postcode. To find out what Moreton Bay Region recreational activities are within 50km of your postcode, visit www.visitmoretonbayregion.com.au Although welcoming visitors with open arms, Moreton Bay Region is encouraging everyone to follow the guidelines set by the Queensland Government to limit the spread of the COVID-19 virus. This means from 2 May 2020, you should stay at home unless it is either: necessary for you to do an essential activity OR for recreation within 50km of your home. 17.01.2022 Great overview of the journey of our Youth Program

15.01.2022 Scouts, want to participate in a world record which will be an official Guinness world record attempt? You can! And it's for a great cause, the GUINNESS WORLD R...ECORDS attempt will be for ‘Most users to take an online environmental sustainability lesson in 24 hours'. You are invited to take part in a world record attempt that involves registering and participating in an online "lesson" and following up with observations of the sky from wherever you happen to be this Sunday, 21st June (the winter solstice and longest night of the year). The GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS attempt starts from 1pm AEST on Sunday 21 June 2020 and follows night fall around the world. All the submissions will be added to the international database of Globe at Night and participants from across the planet are welcome to take part. The lesson is designed to take 30 minutes and you are encouraged not to rush as, if you're not engaged for 30 minutes, it won't count towards the world record. How the World Record Light project works: * You will need a computer, smartphone or tablet with an internet connection to take part. * Sign up via https://worldrecordlight.thinkific.com/ * Sign in on 21 June from 1 pm AEST [03:00 UTC / 11:00 pm US EDT on 20 June]. * Watch some videos, answer all five questions, and do a night sky observation after dark, using the Globe at Night web app as directed on the project website. Participants in the Southern hemisphere will be looking for the Southern Cross (aka the Crux constellation), and the constellation of Bootes for the Northern hemisphere. * Don’t be put off by the weather: observations are valid even if it’s cloudy or raining. * Observations are uploaded to the international Globe at Night dataset in real time. * Finish all parts of the lesson within 24 hours. * Note that Guinness World Records officials may take several weeks to confirm the status of this attempt. What is the purpose of the attempt? Here is the official blurb: The Australasian Dark Sky Alliance is asking people to join them this Sunday on Australia’s longest night to help researchers create a map of Australia’s darkest skies, and learn about light pollution and its effect on people, animals, and astronomy. Together, our observations will map how light pollution varies across Australia’s cities and regions, and make a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS attempt for ‘Most users to take an online environmental sustainability lesson in 24 hours’, says Marnie Ogg, ADSA’s CEO and founder. The project is supported by the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment, which has produced The National Light Pollution Guidelines for Wildlife. Other supporters include ASTRO 3D, AstroNZ, Bintel, ICRAR, Globe at Night, Unihedron, ANU, the International Dark Sky Alliance, Laing Simmons & Young, Waiheke Island Dark Sky Park and Dark Sky Traveller. Look out for tweets from @DarkSkyAlliance, retweet them, and share your own thoughts, support and pics on the night using the hashtags #LightPollution and #DarkSky. And sign up to take part on the night at https://worldrecordlight.thinkific.com/. Please feel free to pass this information on to your fellow scouts we need dark sky observations from the city, country, suburbs, outback and everywhere in between.

01.01.2022 #TieItTuesday 8 The Truckies Hitch Used to secure loads when travelling, so fairly temporary and quickly undone (because who wants to be standing around untyi...ng ropes!). There are several different ways of tying the Truckies Hitch, depending on where you grew up, who taught you and what works for you! The Truckies Hitch differs across the world, with Australia and Japan pretty much tying the knot the same, with the rest of the world apparently tying what is more commonly called the ‘Truckers Hitch’, using the same principles and general approach to securing a load. Tying the knot: Check out the attached image reference and web resources and work your way through this one. It is easy once you tie it several times. Web resources Bob Wests’ post ‘The Truckies Hitch’ https://www.snowys.com.au//snowys-camping-quick-tip-5-the/ (NOTE: This link does not endorse any provider, it merely has a good visual resource to utilise). YouTube resource Tim Thompson Truckies Hitch 3 Ways - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvjoE-xAfts ***Aussie content*** An alternative method of tying the Truckers Hitch has been visualised by Clarke Green at https://scoutmastercg.com/truckers-hitch/ DRIVERS NOTE: As the Driver of a vehicle you remain ultimately responsible for ensuring that your load is secured. Having Scouts tie the load down can sure assist in packing and getting on the road, but you should check the load is secure before commencing your journey. #SecureLoads #SafeScouting #Knots See more
