25.01.2022 This weeks #BRAGStudioSet we look at Hill End based artist Rebecca Wilson. Rebecca Wilson is a painter and writer who is interested in combining the two artforms to share lesser known stories. Rebecca’s love of research leads her to unexpected and intriguing stories. She likes to develop a narrative through image and text and create works that will share individual stories with wider social contexts. ... Shining a light on lesser known stories, asking questions about who we are and often using humour to hold a mirror to our societies and the people or events within them. Her artwork attempts to understand the world around, ponder deeper questions about the human condition and share important stories. To find out more about her work you can visit www.rebeccawilsonart.com or find her on social media at https://www.facebook.com/rwilsonart and https://www.instagram.com/rebeccawilsonart/ Images courtesy of the artist. #SaturdayStudio

20.01.2022 Artists at work... Aleshia Lonsdale, Genevieve Carroll, Harrie Fasher, Locust Jones and Tom Buckland during the Hill End CEL Residency. In October BRAG will be presenting CEL, an exhibition that brings together the work of Australian and international artists working in what South African artist William Kentridge calls ‘stone-age animation’ using stop-motion techniques in which the hand of the artist is ever present. These simple, visually rich animations convey complex, poi...gnant, and whimsical narratives that cut through technology and form a direct connection with the viewer. As part of the project, BRAG will commission these five regional artists from different disciplines to create new work for exhibition. To get the ball rolling, last week, BRAG hosted Hill End CEL Residency led by Animation Educator Damian Gascoigne. 15.01.2022 Co-Presented with BMEC Bathurst (Bathurst Entertainment Centre) as part of the Inland Sea of Sound Festival and the upcoming exhibition 'Just Not Australian', 'Terror Nullius' will be screened at BMEC on the 23rd of February. 'Terror Nullius' is a 55-minute film by Australian-born, New York-based video artists Soda Jerk (siblings Dominique and Dan Angeloro) that makes a radical critique of Australian masculinity, refugee policy and our treatment of the Indigenous Australians.... Part political satire, eco-horror and road movie, TERROR NULLIUS is a world in which minorities and animals conspire, and not-so-nice white guys finish last. Where idyllic beaches host race-riots, governments poll love-rights, and the perils of hypermasculinity are overshadowed only by the enduring horror of Australia's colonising myth of terra nullius. Admission is free, however bookings are essential! Head to the BMEC or Inland Sea of Sound websites now to secure your spot #JustNotAustralian was curated by Artspace Sydney and developed in partnership with Sydney Festival and Museums & Galleries of NSW. The exhibition is touring nationally with Museums & Galleries of NSW . 14.01.2022 National NAIDOC week provides opportunities around Australia to celebrate and participate in the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The theme for National NAIDOC Week for 2020 is ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’. This theme recognises and celebrates that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. NAIDOC 2020 invites all Australians to embrace the ancient history of this country - a histor...y which dates back thousands of generations. Bathurst Regional Art Gallery acknowledges the Wiradyuri people, the traditional owners of the land upon which BRAG stands. Currently on show at BRAG are two solo exhibitions by Wiradyuri artists: ‘Amala Groom RE: Union’ and ‘Ngurang Buwugarra-gu Gudhi-dha Murruway, Wiradyuri Ngaanha, Birrunga Wiradyuri’. 14.01.2022 #ThrowbackThursday to this time last year when 'Threads Through Art: Australian Tapestries' was on at BRAG. 'Threads Through Art: Australian Tapestries', curated by BRAG curator Emma Collerton, was a celebration of Australian art through the tapestry medium. Swiss architect and artist Le Corbusier (Charles-Édouard Jeanneret) famously described tapestries as murals of our time with the advantage being portable. Enthusiasm for the tapestry medium emerged in Australia through e...xposure from touring exhibitions such as 'Contemporary French Tapestry' (1956), 'Aubusson Tapestries' (1966), '17th & 18th Century French Tapestries' (1971) and, most recently, 'The Lady and the Unicorn' (2018). Artists including Margo Lewers, John Coburn, Arthur Boyd, Sidney Nolan and Charles Blackman collaborated with weavers and tapestry workshops in France and Portugal. Since its inception in 1976, the Australian Tapestry Workshop @austapestry (formerly the Victorian Tapestry Workshop) and its talented weavers have collaborated with numerous highly regarded Australian artists, transforming their artworks into thread. A selection including Richard Larter, Janet Laurence @janetlaurence, Ginger Riley Munduwalawala, Nell @nellartist, David Noonan @d.j.noonan, John Olsen @johnolsenartist, William Robinson, Gareth Sansom @gsansom, Luke Sciberras @luke_sciberras, Arlene Textaqueen and John Wolseley featured in this survey. 'Threads Through Art' included the special commission of Luke Sciberras 'The Bridle Track, Hill End' 2019 tapestry with the Australian Tapestry Workshop. 'The Bridle Track, Hill End' 2019 tapestry was jointly commissioned by BRAG and the Bathurst Regional Art Gallery Society (BRAGS) to celebrate 50 years of fundraising. BRAGS aims to foster, promote and encourage appreciation of the visual arts in Bathurst. This work is in the BRAG permanent collect and features on a puzzle available for purchase at the BRAG shop or ATW. 06.01.2022 On view at BRAG until Sunday 6 December, a selection of artworks by Lloyd Rees from the Bathurst Regional Art Gallery (BRAG) Collection. BRAG holds 60 paintings, prints and drawings by the late Lloyd Rees, one of the most significant collections of his works outside of a major metropolitan collection. These works highlight the breadth of Rees’s talents as a draftsman and artist, his generosity as a benefactor, and his connection to the Bathurst region. In 1931 Rees married Ma...rjory Pollard, whose family had settled in the Bathurst district in 1886. The couple travelled to Bathurst regularly to stay with her family at Duramana and Mt Rankin. Rees developed a love for the Bathurst landscape which he would visit over a period of four decades. Over time, Lloyd and Marjory established an ongoing relationship with BRAG. Through their encouragement, the Pollard family donated two works to BRAG in 1977 (The Old Sobraon, Berry’s Bay, Sydney Harbour 1931, and Karinya, Duramana 1974). Lloyd said of this gift: ‘The desire to make this presentation is based on personal links with Bathurst and my love for the city and its countryside, which I have visited for over forty years and painted pictures on practically every occasion’ (Lloyd Rees letter to the Mayor of Bathurst, 1977, BRAG archives) So began a generous relationship between the Rees’ and BRAG, which continued until Lloyd’s death in 1988. In all, Lloyd and Marjory donated 12 artworks to the BRAG collection, ten of which were by different Australian artists including May Morning No. 2, Sydney from Lane Cove 1981, a painting which Lloyd himself acclaimed as a major work, was purchased by BRAG with his generous assistance in 1981. In recognition of his continuing generosity to the people of Bathurst and as a measure of the respect with which Lloyd Rees was held as an artist, he was made an Honorary Citizen of Bathurst in 1981. Works on view include: ‘The Sandy Bay Set’ 1983-84, ‘The Shed, Karinya, NSW’ 1982; ‘The water tank’ 1982; ‘karinya Duramana’ 1974; ‘O’Connell Landscape’ 1981; ‘Landscape at Orange’ 1957; ‘May Morning No. 2 (The Harbour from Lane Cove)’ 1981.

01.01.2022 This weeks #BRAGStudioSet we look at Orange based artist Joel tonks You can catch his work in the BRAG foyer until tomorrow (Sunday 11 October) in the exhibition Joel Tonks: Shaped by fire, forged by time Joel Tonks is a multidisciplinary artist working within painting, ceramics, photography, and interactive electronics. Recently returning to the Orange area, Joel’s artworks investigate the intersections between art, science, and everyday life, and are inspired by the geolog...ical and biological taxonomy of the Central West region. I grew up in Orange but moved away for many years. I found myself returning to the area a lot to gather inspiration for artworks and to get my nature fix. I enjoy going for hikes and documenting all the little details in nature, which I then use in my paintings. I like to mix real and imagined imagery to create a feeling that you have stumbled into an unknown part of the world, or where reality is a little bit altered. It’s interesting the way water and fire shift and shape the landscape, and how it exposes and covers up different parts of it. The ceramic pieces aim to emulate rock types, patterns and textures I find, especially around Mount Canobolas, local landmark and ancient hot-spot volcano. To find out more about his work you can visit www.joeltonks.com or find him on social media at https://www.instagram.com/joeltonks/ Images: Joel Tonks in his studio, 2020.
