20.01.2022 Another advantage of my personalized programs is I find you can lead a student to enjoy practicing or learning a skill they say they dont like, bores them, or they cant do by ensuring the subject is the focus not the skill. (Or vice versa educate them about a subject theyre not keen on using a skill they love:eg from different student later). For example I was working with a student today who told me he "hates" comprehension, is a "bad" reader & is hopeless at public spea...king. In stead of pulling out a text book I pulled out a magaIne about Holdens (hes a very passionate Holden fan). He read out loud a 2pg article fluently, expressively & with very few mistakes. I proceeded to ask him a number of questions, the answers to which were in the article. I asked him to write the answers in sentence form. Result:comprehension completed 100% correct! He tried to insist it wasnt comprehension cause the questions werent written (Id asked them our loud simply so he didnt catch on it was comprehension), so I wrote out 5more questions he also answered entirely correctly. I then asked him to write & then tell me 5new things hed learnt from article, 5 things found most interesting, 2things he thought would interest me, 2facts a Ford fan would even have to agree with &3 things from article he might talk about that night at dinner. After he read it expressively me I pointed put hed just made a speech which he is enthusiastically working on to present to me shortened or lengthened to 3min with pictures &/or diagrams next week! (Im already planning his intro to debating, thus the questions re Ford fans) See more
