19.01.2022 Bathurst council still chasing an Oberon Dam water allocation This was the headline in yesterday's local paper, just because our council has failed to implement sustained water infrastructure does not give it the right to go after another towns water especially in these uncertain climate times. I'm all for helping out a mate, however serious thought is required. What is the likelihood of this water being replenished? How will this impact our town's citizens and business? 14.01.2022 My letter to the editor appeared in the paper today, this is the letter unedited This water crisis was entirely preventable. Council knew well over 10 years ago that this problem would occur approximately now.... Council failed to act on that information. Council also failed to do anything to apply from 2007 to 2012 for the Federal Government $1.48 Billion in funding for regional centres with populations of 50,000 or less to implement recycled water for which Bathurst were ideal candidates to have enable them to maximise the use of our prime water. That is nothing short of outright negligence and completely culpable conduct, and defies council’s own vision and mission statements. The reality is that there are 8,863 immediate jobs on the line and a 40% downturn in Bathurst’s economy not to mention the impact on small business owners who have significant investment in their businesses and what they stand to lose from which they would never recover. There really should be an inquiry into council’s failures to infrastructure up to the growing population. I have been pleading with council for recycled water and water tanks since 2007, they would not listen. It is timely that this year is a Council Election year and time that the community stops being complacent that the right things have been and are being done, because if they had we would not be in this situation. We need fresh blood and up to date thinkers to step up and run for Council. We also need to review Council’s Senior Managers responsible for water infrastructure.
