25.01.2022 New research shows echolocation bats can predict the future.
25.01.2022 BatSoc is wanting to know where you see flying-foxes at night or in the day. We have launched our new Flying-fox Watch project to help us gather data about what they are doing and where to help us better conserve and manage them. For more information please contact [email protected] https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2C7BMN8
25.01.2022 On Saturday Cairns Regional council will begin relocation of the flying-foxes from the Cairns CBD camp. All the information you need is in this booklet. It is hoped that the flying-foxes will move to a safer site in Central Swamp or another nearby camp. While it has been a wonderful wildlife experience to have them in the city, sadly the CBD camp is now unviable and dangerous for them and the bat care community supports the move. Carers have been looking after hundreds of ba...ts every season and hundreds more die. That this is needed is the result of previous actions that were approved under the EPBC Act which removed most of the roosting habitat and replaced it with high rise buildings which pose a high collision risk. It is important that the the relocation goes smoothly to ensure minimum disturbance to the bats. We ask everyone to be respectful and not hinder the actions. This is a dispersal like no other before - it is designed to use minimal activities to move the flying-foxes on without causing harm. It is possible that bats may end up in other places on their way to their new camp. This may be your backyard or balcony but it will only be temporary. If bats end up in your place, it is important they are not harassed. This is illegal and may harm both bats and people. There is no risk to human health if you do not touch bats. If a bat is on its own or it appears unwell, contact wildlife rescuers on 07 4281 6869. If there are a number of them in your yard or you see bats being harrassed please call council on 1300 692 247 https://www.cairns.qld.gov.au//CRC-Flying-Fox-Relocation-B See more

18.01.2022 CHERRY PICKER AND POOL LEAF SCOOP USED TO RESCUE BABY BATS These tiny baby spectacled flying foxes were rescued from a large tree at the Cairns Library after b...eing abandoned by their mothers. Some wildlife carers have blamed the Cairns Regional Council's ongoing bat dispersal activities which have been continuing since July. The Council says the Federal regulator has determined flying foxes are no longer roosting at the site, and it's been approved to continue deterrence measures under the state code of practice. It says this is the first time since July young were found abandoned at the library, and there have been no reported deaths of abandoned pups this year compared to more than 200 last year. But the carers say mother bats are continuing to frequent the tree with their young and the deterrence measures shouldn't continue during breeding season. They'll seek to reunite the pups with their mothers tonight.
18.01.2022 During NAIDOC week we would especially like to thank the traditional owners for their stewardship of our FNQ bats, particularly of the wet tropics iconic species, the Spectacled flying-fox. (Photo: David White)
17.01.2022 It is Pollinator Week this week- (8 - 15 November) and, to raise awareness about the pollination ecoservices provided by flying-foxes, the lovely people from Saving Our Species, NSW, are sharing Seven Reasons to Love Flying-foxes: https://www.environment.nsw.gov.au//seven-reasons-to-love-
16.01.2022 What can you do to help bats during World Bat Week? It's pup season for the endangered spectacled flying-foxes, and although Cairns Council generously assists our Cairns-based carers with some of the costs of raising pups and rehabilitating injured adults and juveniles, there is no such funding for our out-of-town bat carers. This year has been a tough one for BatSoc- we have had no events to raise funds for carers of bats. So please help our spectacled flying-foxes this season by contributing to this fund-raiser. Thank you. https://au.gofundme.com/f/orphan-spectacled-flying-foxes-ca

11.01.2022 You can vote for your favourite species . Our spectacled flying-fox is not one of the animals you can vote for but a sister species, the grey-headed flying-fox.
10.01.2022 Today is World Water Day. Bats need clean water too. And if you are worried that their droppings might pollute our streams, flying-fox droppings actually help recharge nutrients in mangroves. Another eco-service of our endangered Spectacled Flying-fox to our world heritage wet tropics rainforest and reef.
10.01.2022 This is the type of thing we want to set up in FNQ to engage our community with bats, especially the Spectacled Flying-fox.
10.01.2022 Interested in bats around the world? The UK bat conference is next month online.
10.01.2022 It's baby bat season. Sometimes mother bats get into trouble or pups drop off mums. Please report bats in need of rescue- pups or adult bats on their own, bats on powerlines (it may be a mum with a pup- pup could be alive), dropped pups etc. Do not touch the bat but ring one of these numbers: Cairns 4281 6869, 0478 805 527; Tablelands 4091 2683; Daintree 4098 9056; Port Douglas 0417 993 397; Cassowary Coast 0439 687 272; Townsville 0414 717 374

07.01.2022 What we read about flying-foxes influences our perceptions of them. And photos and art do the same thing. Doug Gimsey, friend of BatSoc, has written a new children's book featuring his renowned photographs of grey-headed flying-foxes. The book is available at all good bookshops. Perfect gift. https://www.australianphotography.com//life-upside-down-fl
06.01.2022 At Halloween it is traditional to think about bats. This Halloween thank bats when you try out some of these tasty treats.
03.01.2022 Research shows flying foxes are very mobile creating challenges for conservation.
02.01.2022 For supporters of flying-foxes dismayed at the continuing Cairns dispersal CAFNEC has organised a vigil starting this weekend. Please note the change to plans. https://mailchi.mp/cafnec.org.au/tuo9jf7fr8-569644 While a number of members of the bat care and conservation community (reluctantly) supported the dispersal at first, in the hope of avoiding the high mortality and abandonment rates at this site (due to a series of EPBC and council ...approved actions that affected the habitat quality including removal of over two/thirds of the roost trees and construction of two high -rise hotels), concerns are now held as dependent pups are present on the site each morning. The original referral approval stipulated that actions could not occur if dependent pups were present, but activities are now under the regulation of the Qld state only, and the Qld Code of practice allows dispersal and deterrent actions to occur any time of the year. 01.01.2022 The National Flying-fox Forum is happening next Tuesday and Wednesday. It's virtual. BatSoc is presenting Wednesday afternoon on Conserving an endangered flying-fox species in a conflicted society. We'd like to "see' you. Follow the link for further details https://www.facebook.com/nationalflyingfoxforum/
01.01.2022 Today was the first day of the Cairns dispersal. Although we supported this dispersal as the camp has become too dangerous for the endangered spectacled flying-foxes, we were worried some of the bats would end up scattered around the city. It didn't happen like that. They flew to a nearby camp and by midday were settled in. It was as if they listened to us about where to go! This relocation is different from other dispersals- it was very gently done - just using the minimum of effort- sounds and light- to deter them from settling in the library trees. Now, we hope they remember where their new home is. Photo 1: Dispersal at Library. 2: Arriving new home. 3: Settling in. Dispersal will continue for next few days. We will report in a couple of days.
