21.01.2022 Schedule for my continuing series of FB live Brazilian drum workshops. ****EDIT*** Change of plan - All classes will now go out over Facebook live from Bloco 3...K . Its easier for people to see it, if were not friends already. **** Please spread the word with those who might be interested. If you dont have the instruments at home, you dont need them to learn! For most of the classes you just need some sticks and something to hit. If you dont have sticks you can improvise... Wooden spoons? Knitting needles? Youll think of something Something to hit - something with a bit of bounce is good. The sole of a sneaker, a book, your bike tyre? Youll figure it out. Otherwise Google "how to make a practice pad", theres videos out there for you. ALL CLASSES START AT 7PM MELBOURNE TIME Wednesday 25/3/20 Telecoteco,, the backbone of Samba In this workshop we will look at the rhythm which underlies everything within samba. Most commonly played on the tamborim, we will be looking at exercises for players of all instruments to understand how this works. Friday 27/3/20 Tamborim, 2x1 Technique We will look at one of the techniques used for tamborim carreteiro, or the turning style used in Rio. This technique requires a flexible beater. Monday 30/3/20 Repique We will look at the technique and rhythms used in Rios samba schools. This requires one wooden stick and one hand. Wednesday 1/4/20 Maracatu Fundamentals Well delve into these rhythms from Pernambuco, in the North East of Brazil. We will be learning the basics for Alfaia, Caixa, Gongu and Agb. Friday 3/4/20 6/8 Afro Roots Were going to explore exercises and techniques to help us understand the 6/8 (or 12/8) rhythms that influence so many Afro-Brazilian styles. Classes are by donation if you can, or free if you cant The ongoing Covid situation has hit many industries hard, including the arts. All my work revolves around teaching groups, so 100%of my income has stopped. If you get something from the classes, them even a small amount would help. 05.01.2022 Caixa Em Cima Join Rob Arcari for this intermediate class will look at the em cima technique, playing the caixa up on the arm. We will expand on the pattern lea...rned in the previous session (found here https://www.facebook.com/rob.arcari/videos/10159100448473594 ) . In this class we will work on some variations on the pattern and look at speeding it up. For this session in an ideal world you will have a pair of sticks and a drum or practice pad to hit. If you dont have these then you could improvise and just make it work. If you have sticks then youre winning. If not, wooden spoons? Youll think of something. To hit, you can use a practice pad, a pillow, a book, the sole of a sneaker, again you can figure something out. It all works. The point is to get doing it and get it in your hands. *************************** Let me teach you drums! COVID-19 has hit the arts community really hard, amongst others. All of my income revolves around working with groups, so I find myself facing an indefinite period with no income. 100% of my work has stopped. During this time Im going to be teaching some online percussion classes, primarily focusing on technique for different samba instruments, but there will be some maracatu and maybe even some Afro-Cuban classes coming out too.
