15.01.2022 Did you know that in 1979 Bawinanga Aboriginal Corporation built a shed to store and sort food and essential supplies before sending them out to its 32 homelan...ds, so countrymen could survive. Since then that storage shed has become the Barlmarrk Supermarket which has been successfully serving Maningrida and 32 Homelands for 20 years. Barlmarrk Supermarket offers employment to over 45 local employees every year. BAC pays approximately $70,000 in wages into the community every month, providing opportunities for community members young and old to have meaningful opportunities to work and gain retail certification. BAC provides a free bus service to and from the supermarket from community to make sure people without transport have free access to food and can carry their groceries home. BAC’s Barlmarrk Supermarket sells 1,000 kgs of fresh fruit and vegetables every week, at the same prices that you can buy in Darwin. BAC invests any business profits back into community by improving and creating new food service, whilst still operating the Tucker Run weekly to deliver food and supplies to its 32 Homelands. BAC invests back into renewed food initiatives such as the Wild Foods Enterprise’s, providing new employment opportunities for local fishermen, Nursery staff and community members to harvest bush foods. BAC also provides the communities first ever free bus service. BAC is a not for profit charity. BAC cares about its homelands and community members and works hard to look out for their interests.
