Baxter and Somerville Fire Brigades received the call just after 10:30am this morning (Saturday) about a gas cylinder on fire in Toorak Ave. It took fire-fighters a short time to extinguish the blaze which was contained to the side of the house, but did impinge on neighbouring vegetation, the laundry and roof eaves. It is believed a decanted gas cylinder still containing gas seeped out, igniting and shoo...ting a ball of flame down the side of the house. No one was injured in the incident. Vic Ambulance and Vic Police also attended. Emergency crews were on scene for over 2 hours. Residents are reminded to be extremely vigilant when working with flammable gases and liquids. See more

17.01.2022 As the Cats and Tigers fight for this weekend’s AFL Grand Final, we are calling on the community to ensure their BBQs and outdoor ovens are ready for first bounce. Grand Final long weekend is often the first time Victorians will fire up their barbecue after the winter months and we are urging the community to make sure their Liquid Petroleum gas barbecue is in good working order before the teams kick off at the Gabba. Spending a few minutes to inspect the connection can ke...ep you and your loved ones safe, and means our firefighters will not have to interrupt your grand final gathering, Before you use a gas BBQ: o check to see if the cylinder is damaged. o check the hose to make sure it is not damaged or leaking. o spray the hose and regulator connections with soapy water - if soap bubbles appear, you'll know that gas is escaping. This means you'll need to either tighten the connections or replace your hose. Check that your barbecue is clean. Too much fat or residue can catch fire. If a fire occurs, don’t try to extinguish the flames if it is not safe to do so. Call Triple Zero and turn off the gas at the meter or cylinder, but only if you can do so safely. Use your barbecue in a clear space. Never use it indoors or in a confined area and ensure there is adequate clearance from walls, fences, and other property Cook with barbecue utensils and wear an apron to protect yourself from hot fat Do not use barbecues in windy conditions as the burners may blow out, risking a gas leak. Test smoke alarms Never leave cooking unattended. ... Ensure all electrical appliances including heaters are kept in good working order and replaced if damaged. Keep drying clothes and other items at least one metre away from all heaters. Only charge electronic devices like smartphones and laptops on surfaces that will not burn and unplug them as soon as they’re charged. 02.01.2022 Baxter Fire Brigade and the search for land. Baxter Fire Brigade is currently situated in a fire station built in 1973 that we have long since outgrown. Over the last several years Baxter Fire Brigade has made several attempts to obtain suitable land in close proximity to the township so that we could continue our valuable work supporting the local community. ... In 2018 we approached Melbourne Water in attempt to obtain a small portion of their land that sits between Stotts Lane and Frankston-Flinders Road. However despite numerous discussions with Melbourne Water, we have been unsuccessful in securing the land. More recently we have disappointingly learnt that Melbourne Water intends to sell this land for a profit instead of assisting the local community and their volunteer fire brigade. We ask our residents of Baxter and Frankston who we support to share this post far and wide. Contact/tag your local members of Parliament and Melbourne Water and ask them to assist us in continuing our great work for the community. Additionally if you are aware of anyone that could be willing to donate some appropriately located land please do reach out!
