04.01.2022 Round Eight Volunteers Cup Summary Rugby league Ipswich Goodna 28 V. West End 16 _____________________________... In blustery conditions, Goodna took on arch rivals West End in the first game of the 8th round of the Volunteers Cup. In a scrappy first half, Goodna held onto the ball more to lead 12-0 then 18-4 at half time. Young Saunda Seumanutafa scored either side of half time for Goodna which proved to be the turning point. They lead 24-4 at one stage until West End made a mini comeback when Sione Foueti lifting his side to get a roll. The bulldogs got within two tries at the end but Goodna were in control of the match most of the time. The conditions did not help both sides. Elone Taufa scored a double for Goodna with Wilson Malaesilia their best. The Eagles were good right across the park and lifted at crucial stages. West End were unable to use the wind given their completion rate. Fakahoko Teutau also tried hard for West End. They are still in the mix for a semi-final place and play Valleys and Norths in the run into the finals. Whilst Goodna have all but secured number one spot as they play Gatton and Souths in their last two games Half Time 18-6 Goodna 28 (Saunda Seumanutafa 2, Elone Taufa 2, Chris Schwalger tries Bessie Toomaga-Aufaga 4 goals) defeated West End 16 (Isaiah Asiata, Sione Foueti, Fakahoko Teutau tries Bernard Mosby 2 goals) Gatton 28 d. Souths 20 ________________________ In the best game of the round. Gatton came from behind to beat Souths tigers to keep their semi final chances alive. Oliver Bichel was brilliant and set up the try of the match when he broke the line to set up Joel Brett to score for the Hawks to lead 12-6. Souths's Matt Duggan and Joel Whittaker combined well all match. Whittaker scored off a Duggan pass in the again when he kicked a perfectly weighted grubber for a flying 32nd minute to tie up the game 12-12 then Matt Duggan was instrumental Ben Howard to scored right on the stroke of half time to lead 16-12. Howard scored again just after the break to get the Tigers to a 20-12 after 43 minutes. Hawks clicked into gear and their wonderful young players grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck when Wilson Kama, Tyson White and Jayden Williams scored three unanswered tries to win the grind in a hard fought match. There were seven sinbins in the match which showed the importance of the match. It was a crucial win for the Hawks who just never gave up and deserved their win. They have Goodna at Goodna next week and the Eagles would not want to underestimate them. Half Time Souths 16-12 Gatton 28 (Tyson White 2, Joel Brett, Wilson Kama, Jayden Williams tries Dylan Flanagan 1 goals) defeated Souths 20 (Ben Howard 2, Jordan Croker, Jacob Whittaker, tries Matt Duggan 2 goals) Valleys 26 d. Norths 18 ________________________ Valleys went to outright second in the Volunteers Cup tournament after a gutsy win over Norths at Valleys home ground. The wrestle in the ruck dominated the match and both sides could not hang on to the ball but the Roosters through Alex Hinch and Dwayne Duncan seemed to have Norths measure. They led 16-4 at half time after Hinch scored two of his three tries due to his excellent combination with Duncan. Norths came out of the sheds the better scoring two tries within five minutes with Anava Fesolai and Ethan Page to get Norths within two points 16-14. The game got down and really physical at this stage and Valleys eventually won the grind when Hinch and Duncan again combined for Hinch to score his third off Duncan. Player of the match Dwayne Duncan put Norths to bed when he started and finished off a length of the field movement to score and get the Roosters to 26-14 with ten minutes remaining. Norths tried hard to get back in the match. Nathan Stephenson scored with three minutes remaining but the Roosters had done enough to clinch the victory. Best for Valleys was Dwayne Duncan and Alex Hinch. Whilst Dylan Martin tackled everything in sight for Norths. Ethan Page played well and Anava Fesolai was always dangerous. Valleys 26 (Alex Hinch 3, Chris Chalmers, Dwayne Duncan tries Josh Chappell 3 goals) defeated Norths 18 (Richie Lowe, Anava Fesolai, Ethan Page, Nathan Stephensen tries Tonga Mounga goal) Next Week Saturday 26th September at Richardson Park, Woogaroo Field (Goodna’s Home Ground) 1.30pm Valleys V West End 3.30pm Norths V Souths 5.30pm Gatton V Goodna Ladder: Goodna 14 (Diff 112+), Valleys 12 (90+), Norths 10 (4+), West End 4 (12+), Souths 4 (104-), Gatton 4 (114-).
