24.01.2022 Morning friend Hope you had a great long weekend? I’ve raised the cockle issue here before but I’ll refresh here because it’s urgent. Make no mistake, once Lake Illawarra is flogged to death the Basin is next. Improved roads make us a day trip away. It’s already happening, particularly in Sussex Inlet but in reality it’s the tip of the ice berg as to what’s coming unless we can get a complete ban on the taking of cockles for at least 5 years and more dedicated compliance from the great compliance team who are already stretched. How these people are unable to see the damage they are doing should be a wake up call to all of us who do the right thing.
23.01.2022 Heads up for offshore crews chasing swords and tuna. Lee Rayner will deliver some gold nuggets which will improve your fishing. Tomorrow night on the ALF podcast from Doc Lures.
22.01.2022 Hi Friends This is a really good question I got recently, and one I’m still struggling with a bit in terms of production rods. Basically there’s not much in the market for throwing heavier plastics , at least at the affordable end. For me I’ve nailed some good custom long rods from Scotto James at Messiah Custom Rods for lures up to 20-30 grams. After that it becomes tricky? Presently I’m still using a 7’3 12-25lb Loomis Forcelite and occasionally the 902 Raider travel rod w...hich is 4-7kg but it’s still a bit clunky with a longer grip. As for stock standard try these below to get you going - Shimano Raider egi 802 -Shimano Catana CTR802BRM 2-4kg These are a place to start without breaking the bank. They’ll give you more distance which att thhe end of the day should produce more fish as the long casts get to fish which aren’t aware of your presence in the shallows. Please feel free to comment below on any 8-11 foot models you’re aware of which might do the job? Cheers. Hey Greg I did a great days fishing with you many years ago smashing some great bream with surface lures, still up there with one of the most fun days out. I've recently got myself a boat and am getting back into a bit more fishing and am looking at getting a new rod to target flathead in the basin. I got a nice 70cm earlier in the year and obviously want to go bigger than that. I've listened to your interviews on doc lures and am interested in your long rod theory. I was looking at the Shimano raider but am struggling to find a long spinning rod capable of casting some reasonable sized plastics for the big girls. wondering if you could provide a few suggestions? Cheers mate https://open.spotify.com/episode/0q2MPXelHn0OSq2PWndS1p
22.01.2022 Hi friends Heads up for offshore fisho’s to maintain a sharp lookout whilst boating offshore atm. Around 40 containers came off the APL ENGLAND around the 24th May around 40NM east of Sydney. These containers can be partially submerged & a risk to small boats. Take care & be safe aye
21.01.2022 Looking forward to getting my mitts on a couple of these! If you haven’t got your head around the benefits of the long rod then you’re behind the eight ball. #messiahcustomfishingrods
21.01.2022 Morning friends Are you new to boating in Jervis Bay? Timely reminder that I offer a local knowledge service for Jervis Bay. I have over 20 yrs experience in and around JB & can help you familiarise yourself & get your boat safe to enjoy your time & not end up like old mate in the picture. ... Stay safe
20.01.2022 Just a reminder that I no longer do guided fishing charters. Check out @prolureaustralia who I’m collaborating with on a fishing lure project. 20.01.2022 Another great podcast from ALF. Carp are the most under-rated sport fish in the country. Lately I’ve been enjoying some good sight casting action on big fish in Kangaroo Valley where they’re infested in the Dam & every creek. PM if you want to meet up for a social session up the Valley sight casting the shallows. https://open.spotify.com/episode/2XK3V72woRp3KkN02ptNPZ
19.01.2022 Some more fishing podcast content dropping from the Australian Recreational Fishing Foundation tonight at 1900. https://fb.me/e/3L26bBJqr
18.01.2022 Looks like Messiah are kicking some goals. Long term followers here will know that I use & recommend these amazing creations. The Slingshotz will change the way you fish
18.01.2022 Evening friends Just wanted put it out there again that I am no longer doing charters & unfortunately there is no other operators offering tuna trips out of Jervis Bay ( not that I ever did with bbsf anyway). State of play is 1 other reef fishing charter left in JB so try Simmo’s Afloat. Phone’s been ringing hot all week lol. My recommendation for the south coast is Ben Bolton from Charter Fish Narooma. Having said that I’m always keen for a tuna trip myself so if you’re looking for crew I’m happy to share fuel & go the distance with cleaning etc so send me a DM. Enjoy the weekend run, word has it the 900’s east of here have seen fish the past few days, weather turns to complete shite from Mon arvo so forget offshore boating until Sat at least. Stay safe aye
17.01.2022 Morning friends Update from yesterdays post, Oallen Ford Bridge between Nerrigal & Goulbourn now completely submerged this morning. This means there still a hell of a lot of water to flow down the Shoalhaven River yet. Stay safe aye
17.01.2022 Higgins Storm Chasing is one page I rate as credible. Time to charge up your devices & get the candles ready! From 5pm till midnight will be interesting. Take care friends
16.01.2022 Nearly got caught out on this one! Woollamia ramp closed until Nov 23rd https://www.rms.nsw.gov.au//so2043-currambene-creek-woolam
16.01.2022 For the locals, not sure if you’re aware of this but Totally Immersed Watersports at Woollamia is located in the Hobie factory and sells a good small range of quality Lowrance sounders and fishing lures, including Pro Lure. Tell em you saw this post and they will charge you double !
14.01.2022 It’s that time of year again & time to drag out this old chestnut. We’ve come a long way but there’s still work to be done with regard to getting the message out about the simple stuff like using a glove & a really big net to let the big flathead recover in the water. So to be quite frank, lip grips are shit tools to use on big girls destined to be released, they damage jaws. Use a big net & don’t rip the fish straight out of the water, leave em in the water in the net to recover, it makes an amazing difference to recovery as they don’t get stressed by flogging on the deck of a boat, they do it in the net & by the time they are removed to measure & photograph they’re chilled & so much easier to handle #keepemwet https://youtu.be/IgKDjjKs2Os
13.01.2022 Eveing friends I just found out yesterday about the Feds putting up some money for fish habitat grants. There is mega a short time frame to get applications in and the money is only for Local projects. Does anyone have any suggestions for sites on the Basin that could use fencing, revegetatation, stabilisation protection etc? Please share we have to be quick.
11.01.2022 Great work from our south coast fisheries compliance teams
10.01.2022 Incoming! Glad I surf too! Forget offshore boating for pretty much 5-7 from next monday looking at the current predictions. Weatherzone lining up with similar models. No bluefins for the boys but good surf in protected corners. Yew! #windytv
10.01.2022 Benny leading the way down south on the barrells. Good to see a tag in a big one. Charter Fish Narooma are the team to fish with if you can get a spot and a good weather window this winter.
09.01.2022 This is what happens when the Tasman Sea fills in with a very big deep angry low pressure system, one of the biggest waves surfed and photographed well inside Jervis Bay today and it aint over yet! Rob Slater image.
09.01.2022 Hey friends Here’s a short explanation of today’s weather & basic use of the windytv app. Stay safe tonight
09.01.2022 Not a bad reason the check the po box NSW FM to keep me up to date, Raider to keep me fed & happy off the beaches & headlands & a few more Knellers for the collection, although I suspect the black one will go for a swim?
07.01.2022 Hi Friends I’m after a good second hand 4 stroke 5hp & 15hp outboards.
06.01.2022 Wow! There’s some serious water coming down the Shoalhaven River now. This shot is the bridge at Oallen Ford. Might have to fire up the metal detector too
06.01.2022 Here we go again! Looks like more surf in the bay coming? This event should be followed up by two more Tasman lows over the next week? In between this the beaches and offshore have fished ok after last week’s stir up. #windytv
06.01.2022 New JB mussel farm taking shape https://www.facebook.com/105735272820062/posts/3515371585189730/?vh=e&extid=0
06.01.2022 Round 3! Interesting eye wall prediction for Sunday. Generally 48 hrs out Windy Tv is spot on and has been for the previous 2 ECL’s. Take care and think about re-locating for the weekend if you live in a timber house within reach of large trees. This system might deliver a knockout punch you don’t want! Fish wise all the lower reaches of the estuaries and inshore remain chocolate or dirty at best and we should expect some sort of flooding this weekend. Having said that I’ve had some good sessions on hards around swollen creeks and river mouths so all is not lost. Take care friends.#windytv
06.01.2022 Smoked fish for lunch after a morning on the pond. Just add cold beers. I’m so glad I live in Australia
04.01.2022 Great article here by Fishing World, and finally some definitive stats released by NSW DPI Fisheries on reproductive viability of the big breeding female Dusky Flatthead. If I could add a few key handling points here: - Use the biggest Barra net you can. When you catch the fish leave them in the net to recover for 5mins or more, don’t remove them from the water straight away to flog themselves on a hot deck. The fish recover so much better if left to recover after the fig...ht. - release them in the same place to re-group with males during spawning times - Finally, ditch the lip grips on big flathead to be released and use a glove. Lip grip can tear lips and break jaws, use a glove and ffs support the belly, don’t hang them from the lower jaw. Enjoy https://www.fishingworld.com.au//flathead-facts-let-the-bi
04.01.2022 Good morning friends Timely podcast episode I did this week with the Australian Lure Fishing Podcast at www.doclures.com on topwater lure fishing for bream in the Basin. This is a seriously addictive style of fishing that create’s a huge amount of stoke as you watch the fish eat the lure off the surface of the water. Also check out Pro Lure Australia socials for more info on the latest new Motoroil colour in the SF62 Pencil range which dropped this week Feel free to drop me a message or leave a comment if you’re keen to learn more. Cheers. https://open.spotify.com/episode/5cdxpu9y9lU2bqmvBVJ5F0
02.01.2022 Well didn’t we just get belted! The wind gusts the night before last reminded of the cyclone I went through in Dundee a few years back. Further south rainfall totals in excess of 400mm in 24hrs were achieved. I feel for those flooded out or those whose homes have been destroyed by fallen trees, but, there is a big piscatorial upside to all this malarky. I’m gunna go out on a limb & say I’ll be surprised if we don’t have some of the best inshore & estuary fishing seen here in ...over a decade. Lets look at the past 12 months. No peak harvest from last sping onwards including xmas & easter has left good stock in most systems. Floods are highly beneficial for the spring prawn hatch as there will now be plenty of nutrients & food. Good prawns = good fishing in my diary. Bring it on! Video below is Swan Lake entrance today as this lake and almost all Icolls are now open. See more
01.01.2022 Hi friends Check out my latest episode on the Australian Lure Fishing Podcast with Greg Vinall from Doc Lures. In this episode we cover the the techniques and lures you need to target the Basin Jumbo Tailor. These big Tailor are often overlooked on the pond, but the reality is they are an amazing light tackle big fish target for both sight casting and trolling. Feel free to ask any questions on how to get involved. Cheers. https://open.spotify.com/episode/2v7L0rixtnJCrjKHPPyoEl
