20.01.2022 Heading out onto Port Phillip. Couldn't think of any other place we'd rather be. Have a fabulous Sunday, whatever you have chosen to do. ( by deckhand Yolanda) www.bayfishntrips.com.au

18.01.2022 Wow! With weather as good as it gets, the Plover and her guests (mostly regulars and a small workgroup getting a head start on the end of year celebrations) headed out wide. Even with perfect conditions and fish on the finder, it was very slow with Flathead only taken and just on keeper size. A drift was then tried before heading inshore. At the reef a good number of Jack Mackerel, Silver Trevally, Blue Throat Wrasse and even King George Whiting were landed. A nice 36 cm Snapper was caught at the end of the day. Thank you for being a great group of guests. The guests worked hard for the fish. For those who took some seafood delights home, enjoy. A small set of sample pics to follow:

17.01.2022 The Plover and her guests headed out into Port Phillip in dead calm water and an overcast sky. By the time the anchor was dropped, the breeze was 15 knots off shore. First fish up was a fat 44 cm Flathead, which was a great start to the trip. Some more keepers were taken but overall it was fairly slow. Eventually a move was made inshore. The second stop of the day produce some Morwong but little else. The next spot quickly showed lots of fish under the boat but they were slow to come on the bite and when they did, it was intermittent at best. The guests worked hard for their dinners but some reasonable bags of fish were taken home considering the slow strike rate. Thank you for being a fabulous fun group on board. Enjoy your BBQs.

17.01.2022 Welcome to the Mornington Pier. Hopefully soon we can say: "Welcome on board."

15.01.2022 As the Plover and her guests headed out into Port Phillip this morning, the sea state was a bit sloppy as the breeze from the south west began to fade. The first anchorage was at Morrison's Ridge where Pinkies (just undersize) were the first to say hello as well as a nice Barbers Perch and Gurnard too. A couple more spots were tried. Although they marked up nicely, they only produced smaller fish. Onto the reef. It was great to see the Yellow Tailed Scad, Jack Mackerel, Ware...hou, Leatherjacket, Wrasse and Trevally all make an appearance in varying numbers. To wind up the trip the Plover headed out in to deeper water for a good old fashioned drift for Flathead (and several keepers were delivered). Dolphins sighted today but too busy feeding to play. Thank you to all the fabulous guests on board. It was great to see some first fish ever caught by two of our guests. For those who chose to take fish home for dinner, enjoy. 15.01.2022 Wow!! What a way to start an afternoon trip. Warm, sunny and calm so we went back out again in search of more reds. Bang! Maddy (the daughter of deckhand Fiona was on board for a fishing trip with her dad) snaffled her first fish ever, a delicious 38 cm Snapper. As the Ikijimi process was being applied to the first fish, the next Snapper was landed, this time a 63 cm thumper. Just finished sorting the second one out when the third came up to say hello (a 58 cm beauty) and it ...was decided that it should be a dinner guest. A bit later a drift was tried but the breeze dropped out completing stopping all movement. Into shore for the last part of the trip with a lovely escort by some of our local Common Dolphins for part of the way. They looked very fat from feeding on the abundance of bait in Port Phillip at the moment. At anchor there were some excellent Yellow Tailed Scad, Trevally and Blue Throat Wrasse taken. Another fabulous group of people on board this afternoon. A few first fish ever were noted. Happy Birthday Glenn. Thank you to all. Enjoy your BBQ dinners tonight. Sample pics to follow: See more

15.01.2022 A flash back to the past, this time the 1930s at the Mornington Pier. We can imagine the Plover picking up or dropping of Army personnel here, from the bigger ships either taking them to or bringing them back from Europe during WWII several years later. 13.01.2022 With the sky a steel grey colour and the bay relatively calm with light patches of breeze, the Plover and her guests headed out wide hoping to score some Snapper. Within two minutes of dropping the anchor the first was landed (a respectable 38 cm fish). One mile further out the next was caught, a thumper 62 cm Snapper, which was closely followed by a fat 37 cm Flathead. A drift was tried but achieved little apart from some more Flathead, with keepers in the mix. For the final... part of the trip, the Plover headed in shore. At the reef, there were some nice Trevally, Blue Throat Wrasse, Yellow Tailed Scad and Leatherjacket caught plus a big Calamari just before the anchor was pulled. Weatherwise it was strange and changeable during the mornings charter. Thank you to the two fabulous groups on board. You were great company. Enjoy the bags of fish you took home. 11.01.2022 Once of the most asked questions can be "Is the morning or the afternoon the best for fishing?" Today, in terms of catch, it was the afternoon. That's nature for you. The trip began with a little cooler air temperatures, calm seas and an overcast sky. It actually tried to rain a couple of times. Within 10 minutes of the anchor being dropped at the first location, a 48 cm Snapper was landed onto the deck. It was a great start. This fish was followed by dozens of undersized Fla...tties (with some keepers in the mix). Kevin, our mascot Cormorant certainly ate well. Next stop there were heaps of thumping Yellow Tails caught. Also taken in good numbers were Morwong, Warehou and Blue Throat Wrasse. Thank you to another fantastic group of guests on board. Your enthusiasm makes the trip. Great to see several individuals caught their first fish ever. Enjoy all your BBQ dinners tonight. See more

10.01.2022 On a perfect summer's morning, the Plover and her guests headed out wide. It was fish on almost immediately. The best early fish here was a 46 cm Flathead with a number of smaller Flatty keepers, some small Pinkies and Rock Cod. They were soon followed by a plate sized Pinky and more Flathead. Although there were a lot of throwbacks, it was great practice for later in the trip. With a fair start to the trip and some fish in the bins, a move was made to a second anchorage. Lit...tle was delivered here, so it was off to 'Yolanda's Mark'. Again, it was fish on soon after arriving with a constant flow of Yellow Tails coming aboard. Other species caught here were Trevally and Leatherjacket. It was fantastic to see several "first fish ever" being caught over the day. Regardless of size, the expression is always the same, joy. A great group of guests on board the Plover today. Thank you and enjoy all your delicious seafood meals tonight. Sample pics to follow: See more

09.01.2022 The Spider Crabs of Port Phillip Bay need help. Their annual migration into the bay is a unique global phenomenon. Not enough is known about this species for them to be harvested on masse. A no-take period is necessary to allow them to shed their shells and to provide a window of opportunity to study the crabs and their behaviour. You can help by submitting a letter supporting the SOS as noted below or by signing the petition at Save Our Spider Crabs petition at change.org ...For more information, please visit: Spider Crabs Alliance FB page or Instagram @saveourspidercrabs #saveourspidercrabs

08.01.2022 Tomorrow we will finally get some clarity as to what is going on for the next stage of restrictions being eased. Yay!

07.01.2022 Confused! Covid19 restrictions are gradually being lifted but there is no clear definition of when fishing charters can resume. We will let you know as soon as we get further information. www.bayfishntrips.com.au

07.01.2022 So many delicious edible fish species in Port Phillip. Here are some examples: www.bayfishntrips.com.au

06.01.2022 A little clip from our friends at We love the Mornington Peninsula FB page:

06.01.2022 Cheese and chalk. Yesterday and today at the Mornington Pier. Photos not taken on exact dates but you get the general picture. ( Yesterday by Lydia Schiffer and today by Unknown. If the latter is yours, please let us know for due credit)

05.01.2022 As the water temperature of the bay warms up, so do the Snapper. Looking forward to seeing some of this species again.

05.01.2022 Overcast sky with a faint breeze and glassy sea state was presented by Mother Nature to start the day. The Plover and her guests headed out into Port Phillip. At the first anchorage it was small Pinkies on the bite almost immediately. As little was happening and nothing on the fish finder, a move was about to take place but all of a sudden the Yellow Tails went crazy. It became a constant flow of excellent sized fish with many at 38 cm in length and fat in girth. Such a delic...ious fish to eat and so easy to cook or have sashimi style. Also caught were a Blue Throat Wrasse and some small Flathead. When everyone had a good bag of fish a move was finally made to the second spot, much closer to shore. It failed to produce so a third move to 'Yolanda's Mark' took place. It took awhile to get going but the sounder screen slowly filled and the Scad slowly came back on. A drift was tried towards the end of the trip. Little Penguins were seen gathered in a group as the anchor was pulled. Thank you to another group of fabulous guests. There were several with their "first fish ever caught" noted today. Enjoy your seafood dinners. Sample pics to follow: See more

04.01.2022 With a gentle wisp of breeze on the bays surface, the Plover and her guests headed out into Port Phillip. The first anchorage produced only small Flathead so a move was made further south and at the second stop, the guests started to bag some reasonable sized Flatties. With fish in the bins another move was made. At this spot, the Yellow Tails were first to make an appearance. Other species that soon followed included Jack Mackerel, Morwong and a thumper Blue Throat Wrasse. L...ots of laughter was heard across the decks as fish were landed. The bay was glassed out completely for most of the trip, possibly slowing down the fish, but even then a respectful catch was achieved. The outstanding fishing guests of the day easily went to our trio of women on board. Thank you to all the fabulous guests today. Your banter and merriment was most enjoyable for all on board. Enjoy your BBQs tonight. Sample pics to follow: See more
