22.01.2022 Employees receiving payments under JobKeeper can be asked to take some of their paid annual leave. However, there are some things to look out for: - You need t...o keep at least 2 weeks of annual leave after youve taken any annual leave your employer asks you to take. - If your employer asks you to take leave, you can only refuse if its reasonable to do so. - If you normally earn more than $1500 before tax a fortnight when taking paid annual leave, you should be paid your normal rate for the leave, not just the minimum JobKeeper payment. - You keep accruing your usual leave entitlements while youre on annual leave and your leave counts as service. - You shouldnt owe your employer annual leave because youre on a JobKeeper stand down. Weve got more info about JobKeeper and annual leave rules on our website: https://coronavirus.fairwork.gov.au//leave-the-jobkeeper-s

21.01.2022 PHONE SCAM ALERT There have been a number of recent reports of scam phone calls from a person pretending to be a WorkCover representative. The scammer ask...s the person who picks up the call to respond to an accident that they have previously reported. If the call is not picked up, they leave a message which may sound like, My name is James, calling in regard to the accident you reported to WorkCover. If correct, press 1 to be passed on to your file handler, if not press 2 to be taken off the system. These calls are not from WorkCover Queensland. The scammer does not have any details of the people they are calling. The caller may be trying to lure unsuspecting victims into giving away personal information or the caller may be engaged in other suspicious activity. These calls has been reported to the relevant authorities. If youre unsure if a call is legitimate, or you have received one of these calls, please contact us to check, or let us know, on 1300 362 128.

16.01.2022 Today is national World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. A day to reflect on the importance of understanding and supporting our elderly community and particularly, th...ose impacted by abuse. As the COVID-19 pandemic swept the nation and forced society into lockdown, it has widened community understanding of the harsh realities of isolation - which many elderly people face daily. It has also placed the elderly community at even further risk of abuse, as contact with resources and other persons reduced, many became increasingly dependent on carers and family. 2020 marks 10 years since the release of the joint QLS and Office of the Public Advocate report, Elder Abuse: How well does the law in Queensland cope?". The report explored a scope of issues relating to Elder Law and suggestions for advancing reform. A decade later, some progress has been made to strengthen protections for older people but not enough. The QLS Elder Law Committee and the Office of the Public Advocate will revisit the issues raised in the report and continue to advocate for reform. We encourage everyone to gain understanding and raise awareness of this important topic and take a moment to reflect on how they too can make a difference. 13.01.2022 Leeha James, President, Bayside Community Legal Centre, said, Right now, we are seeing an increasing number of people in our community needing legal help due t...o COVID-19. The uncertainty and limited funding are problematic because it comes at a time when we need to be expanding our services to meet the increased need for legal help, not reducing access to those services. https://buff.ly/2AJFzTY See more
