14.01.2022 Are you still old school where Kata is a requirement and part of your syllabus to grade??? Sadly today so many martial arts schools no longer feel Kata has a purpose in their Dojo’s.....Or they choose not to teach it through fear they may looses student because they find it boring. How wrong they are!... Expression of Kata - KATA- those impossible patterns of kicks and punches one must learn to pass each grading. And to make it worse, each kata gets longer and harder. Then just when you’ve got it right, the Sensei destroys everything by saying Hands up higher, more hip, too wide, too narrow. God does it ever stop? "In a word NO It would be fair to say that no one has ever perfected kata to the stage where they cannot improve. One part, section, stance etc can always be worked on for personal development and self-improvement. When practicing kata use your imagination. This stops you from performing a mindless exercise of movements. With each movement, think about what you are performing and why. For example; turn left, downward block, step over and punch. Your opponent has attacked from the left with, let’s say a knife. As you turn and block the opponent’s thrust you set up your next of stepping over and punching to their head. All kata movements have meaning and reason. We may read kata differently. But if what you are doing is logical, then it is right. Kata can be practiced in many ways: As an exercise For competition Like Tai Chi done slowly with intent For agility Done fast for maintaining form Just to name a few. However, let’s not forget the reason of kata, which are twofold; To allow a student to practice moving against more that one opponent at a time To make students practice techniques not of their liking. We may, for example favor certain punches, stances and kicks at which we feel strongest, but rarely practice the one we do not like. Kata makes you do all the techniques and as you go up through the ranks, all your katas must improve. And you must learn new ones, with each kata becoming a little more involved. Always preservers Osu
