25.01.2022 Welcome back Dreamy Great to have Ka Lun Leung back training last night after a long break due to a serious illness. The big guy has been in the wars and has the scar to prove it.

25.01.2022 The International Aikido Federation (IAF) has been in close contact with the Aikikai World Headquarters monitoring the Covid-19 situation in Japan and the rest ...of the world in order to decide whether to host the International Aikido Summit as scheduled or not in Sep/Oct 2020. We also took into reference the situation of the Games of the XXXII Olympiad in Tokyo that last week was rescheduled to a date beyond 2020, but no later than summer 2021. Furthermore, we have inquired select IAF member federations from different continents on their opinions. Based on the above, IAF held an online Directing Committee meeting last Wednesday the 25th of March and we agreed to recommend a postponement of the International Aikido Summit to Doshu, which he consented. IAFs decision to postpone the Summit to 2021 and beyond has been taken in close consultation with Doshu and the Aikikai. On behalf of IAF, Aikikai will enter into negotiations with the related parties in Japan to cancel many of the facility and service arrangements that had been made. We will await the announcement of the rescheduling of the Tokyo Olympics in order to restart the future planning for our International Aikido Summit in 2021. We will keep you posted with administrative (some statute related requirements) and other information as soon as it becomes available. Many of our IAF member dojos are closed to safeguard the health of our Aikido practitioners and the communities. We would like to recommend physical distance to safeguard our health and that of the community, but maintain online social unity (not social distance) to keep our flame of Aikido training. IAF hopes to use our website and social media to keep the connection with all of you during this difficult time. Please be safe and maintain your health and hope to see you in 2021, if not sooner. Kei Izawa (Chairman IAF) www.aikido-international.org

23.01.2022 Back in Contact Pretty cool weatherwise on the Bayside this morning, but a great day to reintroduce aikido techniques with contact. Taking it slow though, its been a while.

23.01.2022 29th Iaido and 20th Australian Seminar and Championships 2020 CANCELLED In light of the most recent announcement by the Prime Minister of Australia regarding ma...ndatory quarantine for international travellers to Australia, and the increasing number of infections of Covid-19 within our national borders, the Australian Iaido Jodo Seminar and Championships (AIJSC) 2020 scheduled for late May have been cancelled. As with the previous announcement regarding the cancellation of the 45th Australian Kendo Championships, the Australian Kendo Renmeis (AKR) considerations are the same, the health and safety of its members and society at large. Any registration and/or grading monies paid to the AKR by individuals will be fully refunded. Members will be informed of the mechanics and timeline which will be worked out between the AKR and the relevant boards. It is envisaged that the next AIJSC will be held next year again in Queensland in 2021. This is under discussion at present and may change. Members will be informed once a decision is made. The AKR apologises for any inconvenience caused by this decision, but it has been taken with due consideration of the health and safety of its members, their families, friends and close associates. Stay safe.

20.01.2022 Today 26 April, is the 51st Anniversary of the death of Aikido Founder Ueshiba Morihei.

20.01.2022 Dear Registered & Prospective students Our official opening has been postponed since 16th March due to Corona virus. I am very reluctantly to say but decide t...o close the dojo in Algester as of today. I have tried to think many ways to keep it but Corona virus has changed my circumstances and I am no longer able to continue. I am very sorry to make this decision, but my passion towards Aikido is more than ever, so I would like to open an Aikido Dojo someday, somewhere, if I have opportunity. Thank you very much for your attention and kind considerations

19.01.2022 We spoke about this a little bit this morning.

18.01.2022 How to cut with the mono uchi by Otake Sensei. This is one of an excellent series he has put out, mainly jodo kihon.

18.01.2022 58 58th Annual All-Japan Aikido Embukai Cancellation Notification (English is below Japanese) 202051658 ... The 58th Annual All-Japan Aikido Embukai planned to be held on May 16th 2020 at the Takasaki Arena has been cancelled in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Thank you for your understanding.

16.01.2022 COVID-19 Pending further escalation of the situation, my intention is to continue classes as scheduled. This is based us being a small stable group and being able to maintain an appropriate degree of social distancing. It goes without saying that we will all commit to increased hygiene and will stay away from training in the event of any cold/flu like symptoms. Iaido and jodo classes will be as per normal, but aikido will adopt a modified format based on solo training and weapons with no physical contact. As mentioned this morning, there is no expectation to pay training fees until further advised. Stay tuned as these arrangements may change at short notice. In the meantime stay healthy and take care.

15.01.2022 Bit quiet in the Dojo this morning.

15.01.2022 Last Class for 2020 Got to present a few more certificates this morning during our last class for the year. Congratulations again to Narada, Sundara, Nakula and Simon. See you all back on Sunday 3 January 2021. Keep safe and have a great break.

15.01.2022 Happy Birthday to Shihan I got on to Shimamoto Sensei today to wish him a happy birthday. The good news is that he is well, in good spirits and actively teaching. Closer to home, birthday wishes also to Sue Reilly, who is training the house down as well.

14.01.2022 Aikido Open Day cancelled We have decided to postpone the Dojo opening (Monday 16th March) due to Corona Virus concerns. Please do understand this... is a matter of social responsibility, also to help keep our students and their family safe & healthy, we believe its better to be careful. The Dojo is aiming to open on 20th April (Term-2) but it depends on situation. We will post updates on our Facebook page. Yoroshiku onegaishimasu

13.01.2022 Also from last year At Shosenji with Tamayuki Sensei and Shimamoto Shihan. We had just paid our respects to Mama san, hard to believe its already a year since she passed away. So we are thinking about the Shimamoto family and our friends at Shosenji at this time. Good news is that Shihan is well and even though it is still no contact training, he is actively teaching aikido four times a week. Looking forward to the day we can get back there again.

10.01.2022 To Regain Daily Life a message from the Aikido Doshu (English is below the Japanese)... 2 4 8 1 105 120 5 26 6 1 HP On April 8th 2020, Aikido Hombu Dojo started to refrain from holding practices and closed the offices. After one month without a sign of peoples presence at the dojo, the Emergency Declaration was extended, and we had to continue to refrain from practice. Although I was prepared for it, I was still full of disappointment. During this period once a day my feet carried me to the dojo to open the windows to allow for fresh air to flow. It has fallen completely silent. The 105 tatami mats combined with the wooden floor panels make a space the size of 120 tatami mats, and more than ever before I felt how wide it is. The two pictures at the front of the dojo of the Founder, Morihei Ueshiba, and Kisshomaru Ueshiba Second Doshu, motionless, stoically, observe the current state of affairs. In the 6th year of the Showa Era (1931), with the help of donations the Founder built the Aikido-dedicated Kobukan Dojo. During repeated fire bombings of Tokyo in World War II, Wakamatsu-cho, where the dojo is located, was in the situation of being burnt down. I cannot allow the precious dojo, the care of which has been entrusted to me by my father, the Founder, to burn down thought Kisshomaru Second Doshu, and he shook off the embers that came flying and desperately held fast in his responsibility to protect the dojo. There can be no mistake, that one dojo in the burnt area survived the destruction of war must have been the incident to encourage the reconstruction of Aikido after the war. Of course, during the war practices were not held, and in the post-war period Hombu Dojo was opened as an Evacuation Shelter. While there has been reconstruction on the structure since then, the spirit of these two men still fills the dojo. In order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, people around the world must refrain from gathering to practice. For the Aikikai Foundation this is an exceedingly painful time we have had no choice but to endure. On May 26th the Emergency Declaration of Japan, including Tokyo, was lifted. However, this does not mean that the corona virus has been resolved, as relaxing measures may allow for infection to once again spread. On June 1st the Aikido Hombu Dojo will finally reopen for practice. However, as indicated on our homepage, we cannot hold practices in the same manner as before. Consistent countermeasures, prudent care, and ingenuity are required to avoid the Three Densities. Until the day the COVID19 pandemic is controlled, we must create a new daily life in the dojo with compassion for all through the cooperation of everyone. Once, after the war, Kisshomaru Second Doshu thought Aikido is especially necessary today. In that same way, in times such as these, Aikido brethren throughout the world must come together to overcome. And while feeling the desires of the Founder, Morihei Ueshiba and Kisshomaru Second Doshu, by any means necessary I strongly hope to survive.

10.01.2022 New Resumption Date The government has announced an early introduction of the next stage of restrictions. Training as per our standard schedule will resume on Sunday 7 June. Additional hygiene measures will apply. See you then!

10.01.2022 4856 Notice: Hombu Dojo closed from April 8th (Wed) - May 6th (Wed) (English below Japanese) ...4856 411 510() In accordance with the emergency declaration and in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, all practices at the Aikido Hombu Dojo will be cancelled from April 8 (Wed) to May 6 (Wed). In addition, from April 11 (Sat) the office will be closed. The May rank examination is cancelled. For more detailed information, please see our website. http://www.aikikai.or.jp/index.html

10.01.2022 Very sad news with the passing of Oda Sensei, iaido 8 Dan Hanshi and formerly long term Technical Advisor to the AKR. He did so much for the development of iaido in Australia and for me personally. Thank you Sensei.

10.01.2022 Doshu Moriteru Ueshiba sent a message today: COVID-19 is spreading all around the world. I pray for the prompt recovery of all those who have been affected by i...t, and I would also like to express my sincere condolences to the families of all who have passed away. In these times when COVID-19 is spreading around the world, as a measure to avoid infection various things and events are being reduced or cancelled, and our society feels as though dark clouds are hanging over us. Regarding Aikido, events are being cancelled in all the regions, and most people cannot even keep practicing because of the closing of their training places. Although unavoidable, it is incredibly unfortunate. The circular movement embodies Aikidos spirit, the spirit of harmony. I believe this thought is the most important for us as humans. Right now, especially at this time, we must value the spirit of harmony and not lose our moral sense to fear of the virus. Preventing the spread of infection and self-protection is important. At the same time, are people not becoming exhausted from the fear the current situation is causing? Are we not losing our human thoughtfulness, our kindness? It feels like our state of mind is being tested by this virus. We must fight this fear without losing our sense of morality and committing any kind of discrimination towards others, being calm and affable. Until the time that this infection ends, and we can go back to our daily Aikido practice, I pray for all of us not to forget the spirit of harmony, and to keep walking the same path together. http://www.aikikai.or.jp/eng/

Classes will recommence as of Sunday 14 June. Training is scheduled as normal but will be in a modified format to meet social distancing and hygiene conditions.

06.01.2022 That place looks familiar.

04.01.2022 Balance Last evening we had another of those conversations where we talk about mean ways of doing a martial art, as in, "that lineage is mean". Well, having co...me through some pretty mean instructors, I can say that yes, there are mean people out there, people who will smack beginners around with barely any control. Been there, got the bloody gi. But what I dont accept is that there are martial arts out there that are mean and those that are not. Specifically, I have heard often that Fukuoka jo is meaner than Tokyo (or Southern vs Northern or whatever it is these days). Having practiced both, under the top fellows of both, I have never understood the statement. Ive seen mean folks in both lines. The top guys are not mean, they are good, very good, they dont have to be mean. However, I do know that if you repeat something often enough, you start to believe it, and if you believe it, you may just practice in a mean way. Another way you might get the idea of mean, is to practice with someone that does things youve never seen before, or that you arent used to. Again, that doesnt need a different lineage, it only needs a different rhythm. Mean is as mean does. Its sometimes interesting to watch a mean senior of one art go up against an equally senior person in another art. Because one person is a beginner, and because polite, a bit of nasty can happen on the first run through a kata. The interesting part is when the "beginner" totally shuts down the mean senior. This stuff can happen by little hip shifts and eyeballing. It comes down to balance, as Ive been banging on to the class for the last couple of years. It comes down to the very first touch in a kata. If shidachi, the winner, the defender, takes uchidachis (attacker) balance at the very first contact, the kata goes well. Take the balance through the tips of the weapons, take his balance during the techniques, and dont lose yours. In jodo there are places where we pause for safety. At those pauses one side can be mean to the other. Look, in any art, a senior should be able to shut down a beginner at any point in the kata. You see this a lot in Aikido classes with the students wrestling away with each other. If you know what the other guy is going to do, has been told by sensei to do, its not very hard to go ahead of the kata and stop the technique. Yet, if you can control the balance, you can make tiny adjustments to mess that mean partner up, to unbalance them, you can continue through the technique. The problem comes when you get startled, frozen, and try to go straight through the power. Tai atari in jodo is a great place to work on this, so heres an exercise. Go to the position where you are about to thrust tachi back. Tachi, turn the thrust to one side or the other, jo must now compensate and drive you back anyway. Is it difficult? Try putting more power into one or the other of your arms to compensate for tachis movement. Now back up, and consider how tachi can get to the point where he can start messing about like that. Instead, put tachi onto his heels, keep him there by the jo on the hilt of his sword, dont let him drop his weight down into his hips as you try to punch him in the suigetsu, and for goodness sake, if he takes his sword and arms back over his head to try to do this himself, smack him in the nose with the jo. If you have his balance at the first instant of this movement, he has no power to play silly buggers with you. Ive always found it funny when a student accuses another of being mean because "you made me lose my balance". But balance isnt just physical. Anything that gets your partner on his heels, or gets his attention focused on a single place will do the job. In some of the Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu partner kata we find instructions along the lines of "if your opponent grabs your hand, let him have it, in fact, jiggle it around a bit to keep his mind on your hand. Now do mean things to him with your other hand." Hes sure hes got his balance, and hes got a really strong grip on your hand, but hes off balance because his attention is on a single, small point. Hes a pyramid upturned onto its tip. Kiai can unbalance an opponent, startle him. If you are driving forward and receive a kiai that hits the back of your spine, it creates a hiccup in your momentum, it unsettles your mind and unbalances your attack. The way you prepare for a kata can unbalance your partner. As you are moving to the first position, believe in yourself that you are serious this time, that you are going to take his head off. If hes paying attention, he will get the message and become somewhat unsure, somewhat unbalanced. Balance is as much mental as physical, if you can make your opponent beleive that he cant hurt you, he will experience doubt, and doubt is imbalance. Of course, your partner must be experienced enough to actually see some of these things from across the floor, but if he is not, you can always blast him onto his heels the moment you touch him. Not by speed, not by strength, but by the control of balance, yours and his. Dont be mean, if you can control his balance you dont have to be mean about it. Must be all the sumo Ive been watching lately, that stuff is all about balance because theres no way you can muscle someone 50 kg heavier, out of the ring. Balance will do it. Finally, take a look at sensei up there in front of the class. Old, broken, and outnumbered by young, healthy bucks. Yet he controls you all just by his voice. "Oh thats just respect" you say. And respect isnt balance? Watch the sidewalks folks, keep your balance. I walked part way this morning with Brenda and she is a veritable demon of speed, she was walking well out of my comfort zone and I was in fear of falling. Thats the problem with speed, were not bicycle wheels, we get less steady the faster we move. You have to find your balance. Kim Taylor Jan 22, 2020 https://sdksupplies.com/ U. 03.01.2022 Finally got around to running a test for Azumi last night. Congratulations on Junior 8 Kyu. Nice work!

03.01.2022 Passing of Ikeda Teruo Sensei I have received sad news that Ikeda Teruo Sensei, Hanshi 8 Dan of the Osaka Dai Ken Kyo has passed away aged 93. He was formerly the head of the Iaido Division of the Osaka Kendo Renmei and remained actively teaching iai until relatively recently. He generously supported and helped me over many years and has profound influence on our iaido practice. Ikeda Sensei was a great leader and teacher and I admired him deeply. Sincere condolences to his family and our friends in Japan.
